Your friends advice is not good and could result in even more problems. Do your own homework, take a look at some books out there and seek advice from a pro. If you must leave them both intact, keep them separated until you can get a handle on what is going on. I still believe as do others that have posted, that you have a pecking order problem. I have had dogs all my life and never encountered this problem, but there is no question in my house about who is boss. Good luck!!

Thanks for the advice. I will try and discuss this with a pro-trainer in my area who can evaluate the instigator and offer his advice after hunting season. Until then I will keep them separate.

On another note I have seen this occur on two other occassions with dogs that were not mine that were intact males who have lived together their whole lives. The situation was very similar a young male instigator and an older male. These dogs were very well trained and one had obtianed a MH. I believe it is a pecking order issue but for who is second fiddle not whose in charge. I am going to take the younger through an obedience system as I have the older one and see this helps him in the mean time.

Pixie Bee I have to agree whole heartedly that these are not the same dogs you have. I am not saying that they can't be trained to be that skilled but I think it will take more time to get to that level. I am a big proponent of the DK testing system and hope to someday be able to afford to play in that arena.

I also believe that I am holding these dogs back due to my inexperience, but you have to learn sometime and in the end when it is all said and done they are well cared for hunted alot, which is the most important thing for them having a job that they do well.

If one dog is growling to start things, he is the one you need to focus on.  I guess it sounds harsh, but his butt would be hurting the second I said Ahhh and he did not back down.  He HAS to know this behavior is not tolerated.

I think part of the issue is continuity. Snips your suggestion is followed by me when I am home, but things are different when I am at work. It is not harsh and it isn't abusive but the instigator knows when I have a hat on. That said just the motion toward my hat works for me, but he does not respect my wife.

Wow, if all it takes is a hat, I'd give the wife a BIG one!! Seriously, if she cannot handle things I would definetly keep them separated while gone. They do not need to know they can get away with anything.

Dirtysailor,
I don't think a title or level of training has much to do with your dog's issue. A DK is not a guarentee that it is a well tempered dog. The system plays a big role in attempting to produce a consistent, predictable breed, but nothing is a given. I believe a small amount of what we see in dogs in inbred and much more is the product of environment.Much of my success of raising 2 males together is environment and b/c the lines and dogs were hand picked by us. More than a year of research goes into choosing any dog that will enter our home and then staying is based more on temperment then ability.the most innate talented dog will be neutered and removed from our home if unstable tendencies arise.
You said that the correction is not harsh - I think this is your mistake. The punishment should match the crime. Your younger dog,if he really is the culprit, does not believe he can be stopped. You may overpower him with physical means but mentally - he does not believe anyone is above him. Now, you can't go around beating the dog every time he starts a fight. If one good 'come to Jesus' meeting doesn't work anything after that is a waste of time and abuse. It can be difficult and bothersome to give him special attention just to keep the peace. Keeping him intact b/c he may achieve a title and then bred based on his achievments,IMHO, is a poor breeding decision on your behalf. this dog is not worth breeding. He has proven to be aggressive toward other dogs who mean him no harm. Sure, you can take him out of the environment and all this observed behavior would seemingly disappear, but now you know better of what he really is. Breeding him would not be an improvement to your breeding program or whatever your future breeding plans are.If you come to the conclusion he is mentally unstable then he would be best off in a different environment ,neutered or put down. Calling the breeder is a good place to start in making decisions. If the breeder is responsible they will not give you the "my dogs have never" speech and be honest in helping you resolve this issue in the best way possible for the dog.
Boy, did I go on and on?!
