When I picked Blitz up he was 8 weeks old and the breeder didn't have the aKC paper work for me yet so she will mail it to me when she gets it. I do know his date of birth (June 26) and I know he is pure bred cuz I have copies of his parents paperwork.

Blitz is starting to ask to go out, but not every time...however we get him outside often (when he wakes up from naps) and he hasn't had many accidents in the house lately. When we go outside and we are outside for a while he pees just about every 10 minutes, I'm not sure if this is a male marking his territory or he just isn't relieving him self completely when he goes.

Klynn7- I am assuming they were slow in sending in the litter paperwork and are waiting on the registration form so you can then register your pup with the AKC. If shouldn't take but a few weeks to get back. Many breeders do it soon after a litter so they can have the forms for the puppy buyers when they come to pick up the puppies. Just call your breeder back in about a week for an update.

Splat - He probably isn't emptying his bladder completely. They don't figure out marking until they are older (around a year).

Bev-

On a similar note, we never received paperwork for Cooper's parents; however, we did receive his AKC registration form and I have his parents' AKC numbers. Is there any reason why I should request dam/sire paperwork from the breeder? I have been waiting until he is microchipped before registering him, so that information can be on the AKC's files in the event that we lose him. I was waiting until then to see his full pedigree. We don't have any plans to show him; but will be taking an Agility class in the winter/spring, and if we enjoy it might entertain the idea of competing. What do you think?

First, you don't need anything on the sire and dam to register him. I would go ahead and register him now. You can go online later at the AKC website and add in microchip info. When you register your pup you can also get a pedigree for him. It costs a nominal fee, but it is kind of nice to have especially if your breeder didn't give you the info when you picked up your puppy.

Thanks! I suspected that I could go online to add his microchip information later on. ...I've also been dragging my feet because I have not yet come up with a registered name for him that I love!

So how does the registered name work? From what I understand you pick 3 names, one of which is the call name?

The registered name can be no more than thirty characters and usually includes the name of the kennel where you purchased your dog. If the breeder had a theme, then the remainder of the name would also incorporate the theme. The call name does not have to be a part of the registered name. For example, I bought Halo (her call name) from Madrone Kennels. The theme of the litter was Heavenly. In this case I incorporated her call name as part of her registered name. So her registered name is Madrone Heavenly Halo. Her sisters name is a little different. It does not include her call name and takes a different tact with the Heavenly theme. Her name is Madrone Space Cadet and she is called Dizzy. Halo's brother's registered name is Madrone Celestial Knight and is called Knight. Hope that helps explain registered names.

By the way, if the kennel name is not being used you have more characters to play with.

Tessa's name is Jubilee's (kennel name) Absolute (theme) Autumn Punch. Her call name does not appear in it. It doesn't have to, but I always like when it does. I almost named her Absolute Autumn Asset. Asset is "Tessa" spelled backwards. But I found it a little too presumptious.

The way she is behaving sometimes, Jubilee's Absolute Pain In The Asset would have been a good choice :)

I didn't know enough about naming Bo when we got him, so he is ''Nuthatch's (kennel) Bogart'', call name Bo.

Razzie, on the other hand was raised by the breeder. She is ''Nuthatch's Unchained Melody (theme)'', call name Shiraz.

They didn't have a little theme so I just looked at what they named the parents. Both are Horse and Hunt (then their call name). I guess I could just stick with that trend. thanks for the info.

The AKC permits thirty-seven (37) dogs of each breed to be assigned the same name.

I wonder how they came up with that one.

Okay, here are some new pictures of Randi. I can't believe how bigs she's already getting! We've only had her for 3 weeks!

She's getting better at her pointing. She didn't get her head down this time, but she picked her leg up!!

I'm trying to find a place to get Randi insurance.  Does anyone recommend any place?

My holistic vet who now lives in IL suggested VIP Pet Insurance, and we had that for a few months. Then, there was a suggestion that you set up a "savings account" specifically for dog emergencies and put the amount that you would pay per month for a premium (somewhere between $25-50 depending on the plan) into this savings account. This way, it is available to you if needed and not going into an insurance company's pocket that may or may not see fit to pay out on a claim. Its just an idea and one that I've not tried but certainly worth thinking about.

I have always used the put some money aside each month for the vet bills method of insurance and it works well. I have not yet fond a pet insurance that was really worth the investment. For the most part my dogs have been fairly healthy and most insurance companies do not pay for the run of the mill care. The few times I have had true emergency or special care for my dogs I have had ample funds to cover their expenses. And as Phyllis said the money is there if you need it for other things and not lining the pockets of the insurance company.

If you save $ 50/month for an emergency it will take you two full years to have enough money to pay for a $ 1200 emergency. Which may not be enough. Or something may happen before you have saved that much. And having exhausted the savings, you would not be ready for another big expense for another 2, 3 years.

My previous dog needed $ 800 worth of abdominal surger at age 2 years, and $ 7000 worth of knee surgery at age 4. You need to put aside more than $ 50 to be prepared for that, or at least have good credit or credit cards to fall back on.

I learned the hard way, and twice over, so now I save about $ 100/month specifically for vet bills, and also took out pet insurance. The insurance for my GSP is $ 21 a month. If I'd put that money aside every month instead of paying it to the insurance company, it would take me over 20 years to be able to cover the expense that was quoted to me when my late Milka was 4 years old.

Here are the details of my policy with Petplan US (does NOT cover routine preventative care like shots, just illness and injury):

Veterinary fees, incl. medication, max per year: $20,000
Deductible: $200 per incident (one deductible if "incident" is ongoing, e.g. skin allergies, UTI, etc)
Reimbursement: 100% if treated at regular vet, 70% if treated at a vet school or emergency hospital.

No hereditary diseases are excluded, at least for the GSP. Insurance even covers hip displasia, which is not often the case. In addition, my policy covers:

Boarding Kennel: $500 (if I am hospitalized, and yes, that has happened to me before)
Advertising and Reward: $500 (if dog gets lost)
Loss due to Theft or Straying: $500
Death from Illness or Injury: purchase price of dog up to $1,000
Vacation Cancellation: $1,000 (due to illness of pet)

After paying only two months worth of insurance I already had a major incidence when Tessa had the allergic reaction to vaccines accompanied by a persistent UTI. I filed and was promptly and correctly rembursed for what was due to me based on the policy.

Here is a site of reviews of the various insurance companies....very helpful....still, make sure to read the fine print and do some math. Don't go with an insurance company (and I think VPI is one of them) that uses a grossly outdated fee schedule.

Gosh, with costs like that it's enough to convince someone not to have a dog.
