He's gorgeous. That last pictue reminds me of the desktop option I have on my computer called "Friend" almost looks like the color version of the same pic.
Anyways, He is a wonderful looking pup and what a beautiful area for him to grow up in. I am sure you are going to have a GREAT time with that little boy.
Please keep the pictures coming we all enjoy them.

I just wanted to stop in and introduce myself...I am a mom of 2 boys. My husband and I have been wanting to replace our boxer that had passed away 2 years ago and we finally did! With a GSP!!! Our boxer was mine when and I bought her after high school so I raised her on my own, but not with a cage and she slept in bed with me. So our new pup is my husbands very first puppy to raise. In the past growing up my family had labs: my first lab my parents raised as they raised me and then my second I helped raise cuz I was in high school.

Now about our new pup! He is 8 weeks old (just brought him home) and we named him Blitz. He is the first male dog I have owned and it will be a first in crate/cage training. We really won't hunt with him. We live on almost 6 acres and have horses. We live a busy life so we hope it will be busy enough Blitz!

Day one with Blitz went good and he was so tired out that he willingly went into his cage and went right to sleep. I have his cage in our bedroom and I was like a new mom every move he made I thought he was getting up to go potty so every hour I would let him out and he would go.

Day 2 was another busy day but he did a lot of sleeping in the afternoon so he was not as tired in the evening. His afternoon napping was done mostly in the laps of my boys. So at night he did go into his cage just fine but he did whine just a bit (not bad though!). I only let him out every 2 hours. We do have a problem cuz my husband works a night shift and get home at 2am. Though it worked out that the 2 hour mark hit at 2am so I let Blitz out, but he was ready to play at that time, my husband doesn't go straight to bed when he gets home so we played with Blitz for an hour and then we went to bed. Then he slept 3 hours and we decided it was day time.

I might be getting up with him too much at night...I'm not sure (with my other dogs sleeping in bed with me they would sleep all night snuggled with me)...I just don't want Blitz crying too loud at night cuz I don't want my kids sleep for school getting disturbed. Really when he has gotten up he didn't cry loud it was very soft and I am not sure if I should ignore him or let him outside to go potty like I have been doing. He does go when I take him out...

Anyway...hi to everyone and I am sure I will be asking tons of questions for a while!

Welcome to the board splat. Now you just have to post some pix of the little dickens so we can ooh and aah :)

As for the getting up every couple hours, you'll probably find after a week that this is no longer necessary. Bo slept through the night in his crate from day one with no accidents. I definitely would NOT encourage playing with him in the middle of the night or you may create a monster. Out for a pee, back in the crate (with a treat, if you like). You may find you will need to move the crate out of your room if he doesn't settle down after his pee.

Thanx for the advice!  I will stop the play time at night...I don't want a monster, LOL!

I am having a hard time as to where best it is to put his cage since my husband has strange work hours and likes to turn lights on too when he comes home.  He even does it in the bedroom, so I am thinking our room might not be the best place after all and not the living room or kitchen since my husband snacks and then hangs out for a bit there...I wonder if one of the boys bedrooms would be better...???

Welcome Splat and family. Love the pictures in your signature.

For now I would leave him right where he is in your bedroom. If he cries, get up and let him out. When he pees praise him and then take him back to the crate and put him to bed. If he is peeing every time you take him out, then he really does need to go out. I too would not recommend the play at 2 am unless you want that to become a permanent ritual. The nice thing about GSPs is they are adaptable. Blitz will adapt to the your husbands schedule, so I wouldn't worry about that.

As for sleeping through the night, I suspect that after about a week or so he will be sleeping through the night with no problem.

I too have my first male since I was a small girl and I am finding that my boy who is now 15 months old is different than the girls (I have three shorthairs, two girls and my boy). He tests me allot more than my girls ever have. What I mean by that statement is if we are training and I am teaching him a command, even after he learns it, he will test me to see if I mean it. He is also much bolder than the girls. On the flip side though he is the happiest dog I have ever owned. He goes through life with such a welcoming and friendly disposition and loves people and other dogs. My boy is also a momma's boy and absolutely wants to be where I am. Of course, I don't have two gorgeous little boys for him to get attached to either. My guess is Blitz has found doggy heaven with you guys and will worship your two boys and be a great family dog.

Good luck and just remember to be patient and consistent and you won't have any problems. If you have questions just ask.

Re-reading my OP that's what I meant by creating a monster :D I didn't mean that playing at 2 a.m. would really create a monster :D. Thanks for clarifying Bev!

Bo was my first dog ever and he really took to crating ... now that we have his 5 year old sister as well, they both are automatically programmed on certain commands to go into their crate ("last pee of the night"). They go racing outside to do their business, race back down, run into their crates and stick their heads back out for a cookie :D

We just finished our basement this summer so the dogs have their very own cubby down there. Prior to that, their crates were in the living room (not so attractive to non-dog loving visitors) and meant we couldn't put them home and do stuff around the house. With the dogs in their crates in the basement, we can go about doing anything we need on the main or upper floors without protest. I think one of the boys' rooms would be a great place for the crate once he's sleeping through the night -- nice and quiet and dark. But as Bev said, these guys will adapt pretty quickly to whatever you throw at them. When Blitz gets older, your husband could probably just give him a cookie if he wakes up and he'll probably go right back to sleep.

Great advice, thanx everyone! I am thinking of keeping the cage in my room like it is...I might try and throw a sheet over the top and the sides (leaving the front open, to block some of the light when my husband turns it on.

I will keep everyone posted in a week or so to let you know how he is doing with the night time routine. Right now he likes getting "pets" more than he like treats, but I am sure that will change! Blitz is very much in love with my two boys and they are doing really good with the puppy training too!
