Hi guys im new to this site...i just wanted to introduce my little guy to every one..his name is dieter ..i got him when he was 7 weeks..he is now 8 1/2 weeks

| oh i enjoy him so much..this is my first gsp...everyone i know is amazed (including myself) at how smart this little guy is..even at 8 weeks he now obeys multiple commands...i would like to hear from all the people out there that do not hunt their dogs. im wondering what you guys do to replace that...i live right on the water so water activities would be great....he enjoys walking around in the water but he wont go in yet and i do not want to rush him...when do they usually tend to go in on their own |

It took lola until she was 14 months before she would go in on her own with any confidence. I don't hunt her but i keep her occupied. Four times a week i take the girls for a run. She also fetches bumpers in the pond near our house. Between that and Lilly she stays pretty pooped. Don't rush him into the water. My advice is to get in and see what he does. Also playing with him around a dog that does love the water is a pretty good way to get him swimming. Truthfully it probably took Lilly swimming like a fish to get Lola out into the water on a regular basis. |

He is beautiful. I would second what auwallace said on the swimming. The pups do learn faster if there is a dog that already swims that they can be around. I would take my boy when he was 8 weeks and he would follow me out until he couldn't touch bottom and they would go back to shore. On shore he would watch my two older females chase bumpers and swim. He eventually would go just barely in where he had to swim to get a bumper. Now at 14 months he is a strong swimmer and loves the water. Just don't force him. Exposure will do the trick. I do not hunt with my dogs, but with my girls I do obedience and compete in obedience, agility, and flyball. With my boy I do obedience and hunt tests and field trials. I do hiking and swimming with all three. My oldest is also a therapy dog and we work with mentally challenged kids. Obedience in general is good for these dogs as it wears them out mentally to go along with the physical activity. Also games the engage the mind are good too, like the find game.

Congratulations on your pup! He's very handsome and looks very distiguished with the orange collar against his dark markings.
Cape Breton, NS huh? You're not kidding about being near water are you? I was up there once as a young child. From what I remember, it would be a gorgeous place to live. Seems perfect for a GSP.

What a gorgeous puppy! Love the solid liver head. It's nice to see a fellow Canadian join us. I'm in Ottawa. To get your puppy swimming, I would go in yourself and see if he follows or get to watch other dogs swimming. My 13 month old was hesitant but her mother loves water retrieving so that's how we got her to swim. I wouldn't rush Dieter. It's been so hot here this past week that swimming is the best exercise....
I don't hunt but like Bev do agility, flyball, obedience and hunt tests. If you want to expose your puppy to the field, look up the Bluenose NAVHDA Chapter, at www.navhda.org

Hi guys, thanks for all the advice. I do get in the water and he wants to follow me but he is just a little to nervous. He kind of just jumps around. I will just give him all the time he needs. I know he is going to love it eventually. One other thing for now. Do they tend to stop biting EVERYTHING is sight. I do not want to wish his first few months away but i cant wait until he looses those razor blades. haha. Ill be sure to post lots of pictures and ask lots of questions. I have been visiting this site now from the day i found out i was getting one and have learned alot so far. Thanks Guys

Your pup is soooo handsome! Looking at that second photo, he has some mighty large paws to grow into!! I also love a bold, orange color on a GSP.
We have an 18-week-old, all-live male that we brought home at 9 weeks. We never had issues with him biting or chewing on things that he shouldn't be. But we always kept (and still do) lots of puppy toys on floor. He quickly learned what was fair game to play with and chew on.
When we first got him he loved this stuffing-less fox toy with squeaker (http://www.dog.com/item/skinneeez-plush-dog-toy/490513/), a few puppy stuffed animals with squeakers, and this Kong Air Jack (http://www.dog.com/item/kong-air-kong-squeaker-jack/311426/). He has also always liked a frozen puppy Kong stuffed with peanut butter or plain yogurt. That might be a good idea if you want to give him something to safely chew on for an extended period of time.
As for the water, it took Cooper a few trips to the lake to really entertain the idea of getting in the water. Being there with a water-loving dog definitely helped him to jump right in. He still does not like to go beyond where he can stand, and he much prefers playing in the sand to being in the water. If you have any shallow streams or inlets, that might be best to ease him in. The water will be much warmer, he will be able to stand, and he will be able to run through the water to land, and back in the water. This realllly helped Coop gain confidence playing in the water. Once he realized that he could stand throughout the inlet, he started running full speed and in circles through the center of the inlet. It is so fun to watch.
I recently bought a Kong water wubba (http://www.dog.com/item/kong-water-wubba/244505/) to coax him into the lake. Floating toys definitely help, too. But he still doesn't like to go beyond where he can stand- and I don't try to push the idea, either. You're lucky to live on a lake. I'm sure Dieter's love for water will come much more quickly!!

| You need to work on the biting or mouthing now. That is different than chewing. They chew allot when they are young and until they loose there puppy teeth (4 to 6 months). Some are chewers all their life and if he is a chewer I would recommend deer antlers. For biting or mouthing I just hold their lower jaw and gently press down on their tongue until they pull away. I do that every time them try to bite. They hate it and it does not take long before they stop the biting. Be sure he has lots of his own toys to bite and play with as that helps allot. |

Welcome to the forum! Always great to have some more Canadian content on the site. Dieter is a gorgeous little boy! He's going to grow into a handsome young lad.
Neither my hubby or I hunt, but he is a marathon runner and our two dogs (Bogart -- 2.5 years and Shiraz 5.0 years) are his training partners. They each average 1 to 3 miles a day with my husband. We also try to get them some good hard off leash running in the forests nearby or at the local dog park (1 hour or so 2 to 3 times a week). Last winter hubby snowshoed a lot in the forest with Bo offleash and that was a great way to wear out some young dog blues  |
