If you have a GSP who loves chasing and retrieving a tennis ball and does it well, instead of throwing your arm out all the time, you can take your GSP tennis crazy dog to your local Boys and Girls Club and create a fun time ball toss session with you GSP and the the kids. The kids and the GSP absolutely have a ball together and both kids and GSP burn off alot of energy.  Rocky is a well loved GSP at our local Boys and Girls club..... Today at the club. one skeptical teenage 13 year old girl asked me."What can your Dog do?' I told her while handing her the tennis ball to give it  a good high arch toss out to Rocky. She then gave the ball a high arch high toss and watched Rocky streak across 12 feet jumping 6 feet or more in the air catching the ball at highest flight and said to her that is what my GSP is talented to do. And she responded back to me WOW!!!!  As a rule GSP's love kids and  share many of the same energy and behaviors .  So go for it! Step out of your box and have you and your GSP become a great volunteer expending your GSP's endless energy with the Boys and Girls at the Club!!!

With Snow in the forecast for some of us in the very near future, the tennis balls get buried and lost when tossed by the boys and girls. Then you have to upgrade to a worn out punctured canine friendly basketball. Once punctured can be shaped to be carried in the GSP mouth.

GSP's even have fun trying to bury the basketball in deep snow. Gives them added challenge

Marie-
I love that idea. I would have never thought of the boys and girls club. I may have to look into that. I am going to try and get my male certified this winter as a therapy dog too. Thanks for the idea though!

Moose 1

Not only would that be good for the dogs but be sure to take your son along when he arrives. My boys went with me when I did volunteer work and they were little. Result---two very kind young men.

Mine still love the frisbee, Hunter will pick up his jolly ball when he wants to go out and play. You are making me shiver with all the winter pics! BBRRRRR Not ready yet.
If you were to put some bird scent on the tennis ball in the winter, your dog would be able to find it. Makes a good hide and seek match. I use it on mine.

Thank you Acelcappucinno for pheasant tennis ball winter idea!!!! I will definitely try that as I have pheasant scent and do use it on Rocky's dummies!!! .... Moose Great you are swinging towards Therapy work. There is definitely training and rewarding experiences in the Therapy World . If you have a Registered Therapy Dog the one thing you learn is to be one on one with your dog when you visit places as you need to react qiuckly if you and your dog meet with adverse situations. So if bringing a small child, you really will need another person along to watch and be one on one with your small child. (So one person with the dog and one person with the child) What ever Therapy Group you test and certify with will have a set of rules you have to follow. If you have any questions about Pet Therapy feel free to e-mail me thur my profile. as I do have 16 years of practice with Snickers, Chese/lab 12years and now Rocky 4yrs!!!

Marie-
Thank you for the offer with the therapy work. We will be going through the same place we did last time. We have an Australian Cattle Dog and an American Pit Bull Terrier who are also therapy dogs. I probably would only take my son with if it were to a boys and girls club type thing. Not to the nursing homes. He could get too many yucky colds as the nursing homes. I love the pheasant cent thing too! I will try that this winter!

It may take a moment longer to find it but mine love it. Just like hunting. Got to find the birds you know. It works especially good once the ball is wet as the scent is stronger.
Oh yeah BTW Marie, thanks for all the pics of the snow. Now it is snowing her in Michigan today. Got about 1/2 inch on the ground right now. See what you started. Ha Ha only kidding. It'll be alot easier to find the deer now anyways. The dogs were out going crazy in it already. Chasing and sliding. They do seem to be alot more frisky in the cold weather. LMAO

Must admit I am a bit jealous of your first fun snow in Michigan, Lucky you!!! We have active bow hunters in our family that would love it now. But our area in Wisconsin just got flurries. Love seeing our GSPs in first snowfall zooming, chasing and sliding. Such a hoot!!!! Cannot wait till our first real snow fall. All my winter gear is out and ready!!!

I have some pics to post soon. They were so silly in the snow. The pups were so small last winter they don't remember it. They loved it now though.
