| A few guys on my hunting forum have them. They are a different breed as far as I know. They are also called French Pointers. A girl I knew way back in grade school's family had/bred them. Very nice dogs. |

I think you mean Braque francais? There's a breeder here in W PA of 'de grande taille'. If you look at them on their own, you'd say GSP, but side by side you can really see the differences in the two breeds.

| We thought about getting one at one point. Just never pursued it as they are pretty pricy. Well the ones we were looking at were. I also love the sounds of their personality, temperment and size. |

We have one in our NAVHDA Chapter. At a quick glance, you'd mistake for a GSP but not when you see the 2 breeds side by side. They are smaller and whiter. Temperament, energy level etc seems the same. Gail |

"Pointer" in French is braque ... so as someone else stated braque français are french pointers. GSPs are "braque d'allemand à poil court". Good to see my French training is going to some good purpose |

According to my Mini-Atlas of Dog Breeds, There are 2 types of Braque Francais. There is the Braque Francais De Grande Taille, and the smaller Braque Francais De Petite Taille. They are both French Pointers. The smaller is of finer bone and snippier muzzle. The larger has a broad head, and a slightly convexed muzzle. They both are white with chestnut patches, with or without ticking., although the Petite's chestnut markings are often more extensive. They are not AKC Registered. They are FCI Registered |

They are a very neat looking breed but I think im just biased b/c they look like my GSP's. I've never even heard of them here in the South and my dad is a vet so i've heard of or seen just about everything lol. I wish they had a few around here I'd love to see some of them work and interact just to compare. Its just facinating to me that two different breeds can match up so closely in markings, size, temperment, biddability, etc... Thanks for all the info. |

| It is well known that very good pointers (braques) were produced in France in the 19th century, and some believe that some French pointer blood was used to refine the Deutsch Kurzhaar (out of which came the GSP). The fact that German pointers were once commanded in French may support the theory that the dogs were either bred or trained in France. But then again, French is also the offical international postal language... |

Our breed is actually Braque allemand a poil court. No "d'" A braque refers to what we would call a continental pointing breed. I think there are quite a few of them known in Europe, but barely known over here. The Pointer is referred to as Le Pointer! I think the Braque francais can be shown in UKC. My book of dog breeds lists several braques (which 200 years ago were basically considered one single breed before they were selective bred), e.g. the Braque d'Auvergne, Braque Dupuy (one of the older braques, and very houndy), Braque Saint-Germain, etc. Of the Braques Francais, the de Petite Taille most resembles the GSP.
There is actually a Deutsche Bracke (German Foxhound). Bracken in Germany are hound dogs used for hunting small game such as rabbits and foxes thus not conisdered a pointer.
I was always quite fond of the Perdigueiro Portugueso, the Portugese Pointer, which looks a little like a Vizsla exacept bigger and is a very popular dog in Portugal. |
