It is sad when any group of animals is mistreated, but anyone who donates to The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) "knows not what they do."
HSUS doesn't own a single animal shelter or facility. They are a money-raising organization, who publically solicits donations anytime any animal is found suffering, while they let other local shelters actually take on the task of handling the animals. Here is a link that might open some of your eyes to the true nature of HSUS:

HSUS' true goal is to pass more and more laws against animal ownership of any kind, especially hunting dogs, which they eventually intend to abolish. So before you go to sending these humaniacs all your money, make sure you know what they're really all about. HSUS was investigated for fraud after Hurricane Katrina, where they raised over 30 million dollars to "relocate" all the lost doggies, but could provide any proof for doing so. They took the money from all those who sobbed about the lost doggies and then they ran.
On the same note, PETA is no better. They kill over 90% of all animals they bring in, perfectly adoptable pets, because that is also their true agenda: the abolishion of the human-pet relationship. There is lobbying going on right now to reclassify PETA as a slaughterhouse, not a shelter, because of the volume of animals they kill versus the volume they save. So check out this site also before you go donating to PETA also:

So, again, it is a shame when animals suffer, but it is even a bigger shame to donate to groups whose true agenda is to rid the country of companion animals altogether, because of their solicitation and preying on people's emotions over animals.
