Opinions please (yes, I know what I'm getting in to when I ask for opinions - lol)...  Wolfgang turns 3 months old tomorrow and, to this point, we have been feeding him 3x/day.  He usually gobbles up his morning and evening meals eating at least 90% of it, however, at noon he usually only eats around 50% of his food.  Eventually, we want to only feed him 2x per day so, beginning today, I'm going to start feeding him slightly larger meals 2x per day.  I know it will take him a few days to get used to the new pattern, however, my question is this:  Do you think he is too young to go to a 2x per day feeding schedule?  I was going to wait another month, however, our vet said that it would be perfectly fine to start it now.

Thanks, as always!

My question is has he been doing this for a while or only for a couple of days? I am also wondering about why he is leaving food in the AM and PM feedings. Maybe you are feeding too much. I think what I might do in this case since he is only 3 months is change the amount you are feeding. I would feed less in all three meals, but continue to feed three times a day. He is still growing at an enormous rate, so I would be reluctant to eliminate the noon meal just yet. I usually switch my pups to a high quality adult food twice a day at 6 months unless I am having trouble keeping weight on them. At 6 months they are still growing, but not nearly as fast and are actually pretty close to their full adult height (they may still grow a bit in height, but not usually too much).

He been eating like this for a little over a week.  I'm feeding him according to the "guidelines" on the bag.  He gets 3/4 cup of food at each meal and he weighs about 21 lbs.  I'm feeding http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/products/dogs/dry_food/large_breed_adult_dog_formula/.

I would reduce his amount just a little. Maybe give him 2/3 of a cup instead of 3/4 and see how he does. The guidelines are just that and each dog is a little different. If he continues to leave some with only 2/3s then I would drop him down to 1/2 c. I think he is just telling you he doesn't need quite so much food which is better than packing it in and putting on too much weight. He may also be having trouble with the size of the kibble. Remember he has his puppy teeth and it won't be much longer and he will start loosing those puppy teeth.

Something else to consider, this is a food for large breed adults. I am a little wary of feeding a puppy anything for large breed. I think I would try either their adult formula or their puppy formula. The kibble should be smaller with the adult or puppy formula. Also, check the guidelines on the bag as it may indicate a different amount. If so feed, that otherwise I would start with the amount you are currently feeding and reduce if needed. Also, if you do switch remember to do it gradulally so your pup doesn't get stomach upsets.

I fed Tessa 3 times a day until she was about 5 months old I think. I got her at 3 months and I know I gave her 3 meals for a while after that. I did feed a little less at noon than a.m. and p.m. But I think with their metabolism and with puppies up to 6 months growing so fast, 3 meals work better.

When I switched over to twice a day, I would still occasionally feed a noon meal if she was particularly active that day.

I feed puppy food until they start getting chubby on the same amount, usually around 8 months, but switch to adult food no later than 1 year.

Hello pvstks

Are you feeding the adult formula or the puppy formula? Your link was for the adult formula. They also have a large breed puppy formula. My little guy is eating that now.

You are feeding about the same quantity that I was feeding my pup at that age. Now my puppy is just over 5 months. I'm giving him 1 1/2 cup in morn and evening with about 1/2 to 3/4 midday. He chows it all down - if he doesn't, his big sister will do it for him. After he eats, he goes over to see if the adult dogs left any food in their dishes - of course not. It is like they play musical food dishes once they finish their own.

Are you adding any water to the food and letting it soak in before feeding? Or adding any yogurt?  I did these at the 3 month age. The adults get yogurt when I have it too.

Sorry -- I'm actually feeding the large breed puppy formula -- I linked to the wrong page.

I added about 1/3 cup of water for the first week that I had him then, on the advice of my vet, stopped the water.  She (the vet) said there was nothing wrong with it, but after around 8 weeks, that it was best to get a puppy used to kibble and they really don't need the "gravy like texture" any longer.

So, I would keep feeding three times a day and just reduce the amount you are feeding at each meal. You could add some yogurt as one poster suggested. I also add canned salmon once in a while, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, spinach, etc. I wouldn't cut out the middle meal until your pup is about 6 months. I am assuming the puppy kibble is small bites, if not you might want to look at something that has small bites. I also add a skin and coat supplement which my dogs love and really makes their coats glisten.

Thanks all -- I'll continue to feed 3x/day for a couple more months.  I'm going to add some sardines (which my former dog devoured) once or twice a week and will also try the yogurt.

FYI -- we still feed our two on a 3X/day schedule. Mostly because of the cats, but it works well for the dogs too, who go out on long runs frequently with my husband.

I guess everyone has their own way of doing things. I usually stop the 3 day feeding around 3 months old. They go on two meals then and forever. Leena gets 3-4 cups/day.

My husband & my work hours don't allow us to be home to feed 3x a day so our pups were fed 2x a day from the time we brought them home. We feed Purnia ProPlan Proformance from the time we bring them home also. Of course we mix in what the breeder was feeding at first. We switch over to once a day feeding, in the evening, aound 10 months or so.

I also stop the noon feeding at about 3 months, tho I may leave food for pup to snack on during the day. All my dogs, from almost 11 year old Emma down to 6 month old Dede are fed wet, soaked food. With it as dry as it is in the SW, they need every bit of hydration they can get...
