I will try what you did the other night. The only thing is when I calmly walk over to him he runs away like a game of tag. I stay calm but at that point we could be across the house from where I originally called him. I will try it again and see what he does and how he reacts to that.

He has been really good when I ask all three of them to sit and stay at the door before I let them in/out of the house before feeding. It is just the whole "come" subject that he enjoys p*ss*ng you off lol and trying to get you to play his game.

What happens if you turn the tables on him on the recall. Have you tried calling him and when he doesn't respond immediately turn and run or move quickly away from him making a big deal with lots of energy and excitement like you are having the best time in the world. If you do that and he comes to you you can tell him he was a good boy. I used that with Halo when she was younger because she loved the chase game. She still likes chase, but now comes when she is called.

I bet if you call him when out of sight he will come running. Offer a treat when he does.
Another method is to give a sit command, or just get him to stay still, then walk to within a few feet of him and call him to you. It is important he always come to you,not you to him. I have never been a fan of going over to the dog and dragging them, the dog is not doing what you want you are 'making' them do it,it is important that the dog performs commands freely. It changes the way a dog sees the world and you.Try approaching with you body at an angel, not head to head.

Bev made a total fool of myself trying to turn the tables on him. He just meandered off while my two came chasing after me. Its like he could careless and thinks it would be easier not to follow. Pixie bee same thing as I said to Bev with calling him when he can't see you. I did get him to sit and come with in a few feet and he came. But that doesn't seem very productive because if I have to get across the house doing that it could take me a half hour... I am tempted to just put him on a check cord inside too.

I think I would put him on a check cord until he knows you mean business.

Bev and Tessa,

First of all I would like to thank you both for your advise about the pinch collar vs Gentle Leader.  I got the pinch collar and it works wonders.  I decided I was going to give it a try.  I put on my knee pads just in case he decided to drag me down the street again.  But much to my surprise, he never even tried to pull.  He walked next to me with a loose leash the entire time.  He never even tried to step ahead of me.  I was floored!  I don't know if he even realized the pinch collar was there.

Here is a few pics of my boy.  He is really doing very good now compared to the devil dog that he was when we first got him.  Alot of it has to do with the things that I have learned from all of you.

Thank you all again for your advise and we look forward to learning much more from all of you.

Your welcome and I am glad the pinch collar has made your walks more enjoyable.

Bev, I've never used a pinch/prong collar. How do you recommend transitioning from it to the flat/buckle collar? I am pondering using one with Leena.

I would start with the prong collar only and train with it. Once she starts understanding what you are asking her to do and focusing on you during training, then I would flip the prong over so the prongs are point out. If she does well that away, I would switch to the flat collar. Just a word of warning, she will likely test you with the flat collar, so you will have to be ready to correct her. Once she understands she has to behave with it on you will be good to go. It may take a while in the prong collar though, so don't get in a hurry. Let me know if you have more questions.

Glad to hear it works for you and that is a handsome boy - what a face!!!!

There are ways to avoid the dog becoming collar smart, but somehow I never managed to be succuessful here. Tessa doesn't pull with the pinch on (although we are still working on a more precise heel), but without the collar she falls back on her old habits which thankfully are not as pronounced any more, and she is much more responsive to verbal commands without the pinch now...just neeeds constant verbal reminders which I hate. Working on it.

If you ever feel the dog needs a little less than the pinch collar, you can also put in on the dog in reverse, with the prongs facing out (away from the neck). This way it becomes a choke collar, however, it applies pressure more evenly than the choke chain which I am not fond of.. Looks mean on the dog but works quite well.

It is a good way to start weaning them away from the pinch. I also will flip the pinch when I do sits and downs. If you have to grab the collar to reinforce the down or sit having the pinch does too much of a correction in the wrong direction and confuses the dog.

LOL, Tessa, great minds think alike.

So I am visiting our friends (again) who own Charlie. Today we were walking the dogs down the canal (the very small canal that maybe gets to three feet deep). Bailey and Lily love the water a lot so I let them off leash was throwing balls into the water with them. Charlie was being a tweaker head as usual when I decided that I was going to drag him into the water (because he hates it for some reason) and make him walk/swim the canal back to the house. We now found out that is the BEST exercise for him. it was about a mile and a half that three dogs and me were walking the canal up stream. They are all pooped and we finally found an outlet for him that is easy to do (minus having to be in the water with him to hold the leash). We will be back down there tomorrow again for more exercise (best kind in this kinda heat!) and I will take some pictures and post!

Swimming is one of the few things that really totally exhausts Leena. I try and take her as much as possible. Its great exercise for them, and great for joints.
