Thats what I was thinking. He is Marines so he is a bit aggressive lol. I will just have to tell him to tone it down.

*Update* I have noticed in the last two days Charlie has progressed. Maybe he is being influenced by my two. More consistency. I have been home with him for 48 hours and they haven't gotten away with anything. An hour till Megan can do her evaluation! :)

Did the dogs jump on the guy again? Did they keep their distance?

He did it three more times. Didn't change anything. Hes head strong and that method doesn't work with him.

I am a huge fan of the raised knee to curb jumping for some dogs.  EXCEPT for serious hunting and sporting dogs like GSPs.  One, I've always found that it becomes a game to them.  They are getting a reaction out of you...good or bad.  Two, hunting dogs' immunity to pain can be remarkable, especially when they are "amped up".  I'll bet that marine could raise his knee for an hour and those dogs would keep on coming.  Three, I find if it doesn't cause the dog to immediately rethink jumping up, it just isn't going to work.  Four, I think you need to stay really, really calm when using this method.  Often times people get frustrated if the dog keeps jumping and their "kneeing" becomes aggressive...which will only "amp" the dog further.

The best method I've seen so far...completely ignore the dog.  If it jumps, turn your back.  Kind of like a "Dog, I could care less if you're there.  I will give you absolutely NO attention until you have four paws on the floor."  Key point here: don't act startled or pull away.  Stand firm but turn your back to the dog.

I use the knee in the chest for my dogs when they jump. With my girls it took no time at all, with Ringo he will still test the water every now and again. Just stick with it as I suspect Charlie is still feeling you out. Some dogs just don't believe you mean the first hundred times. LOL, sounds like things are at least going in the right direction.

So we just got back from Megan's Lilly and Charlie both had a blast. Charlie wasn't as much of a brat as usual but who would with 3 older GSP's! I had a blast and I am exhausted as well. Time for sleep and an update tomorrow of how things go in training world! Thank you all again for your wise words of wisdom. :)

I am addicted to this tread. I found myself up @ 4am this morning looking for an update. LOL This is better than the last 3 novels I have read. I check for updates throughout the day @ work and then as soon as I get to the house, YEP, checking for updates.

Charley! you are the star of my day right now and I know by reading other posts that you are in the best hands with Jessica and Megan.

My Tyler is sending Charley telepathic thoughts "Listen, Learn and life will be GRAND"

I am new to the forum, but learning new things every day from all of you.

Thank you
Terri

Bo was kind of like Gnarley Charley when he was a pup. Nothing anybody suggested really curbed the boy's activity. I didn't trust him 1 foot without a leash -- his recall was terrible! He has always been long and is probably at the top of the standard for height and weight, so not easily controlled. Taking him out in the forest only seemed to amp him up even more.

What changed? Age, neutering (at 15 months) and off-leash running (after neutering). Having said that, he can still go for a really hard eight mile run and STILL needs to get rid of his zoomies for 10 minutes afterwards.

Patience (ours') was key. Constant training and mind work, not giving an inch when he does something we don't want and the knee in the chest thing. I would still not nearly classify him as a perfect dog, but for the most part he behaves exactly as we expected. We joke that it's a good thing Raz wasn't our first dog or we would have thought these dogs were remote control :D

A friend of ours' has looked into scootering in the area with her GSP. I have a feeling ours' would be suited perfectly for this as well.

Good luck with Gnarles :D

I will give a better update! Well last night went really well. I took both Charlie and Lilly with me to Megan's to run around with her gang. We got to her back fenced area and Charlie saw Dulcie, Rogan, and, Anya and he started barking. We found out he is all bark lol. He socialized really well and Little Miss Prim and Proper (Lilly) didn't jump in right away with the fun (she didn't like the boys much they kept running into her). When Megan was getting ready to hook him up to the cart after putting the harness on him she called him and he looked at her and walked the way giving us practically the bird (so at this point with is actual owner she will not be able to take him off of the check cord because he knows what come means he just chooses not to obey). Once hooked up to the scooter Meg said he would stop to check out everything like he'd never been outside before (sprinklers, bushes, you name it) He kinda is a duh boy or maybe thats his way of getting away with doing things. Who knows. That is one problem that I do have with him on walks he stops at every tom, dick, and harry and I wont bike or rollerblade with him because he is to unpredictable and a VERY big 6 month old. All three slept in till 9:30 (wow) and I will have more to update on later today after we work on some things. Feel free to give me more workout/training ideas and try to be specific.

Oh and cute little note. Rogan Megan's male would start digging really hard and fast. Shooting dirt 2 feet behind him. When Lilly saw this she went BANANAS chasing his dirt and bitting at it (what a weirdo she is lol)

I think Charlie has been running the show for so long(in his own mind) that he doesn't recognize the signs of correction and what they mean and this is rolling fast down hill ruining any level of cooperation. He just does't relate the punishment to the crime. It seems he has a bit of a lack of socialization which would connect to him not recognizing signs.
As I said in my first post, I think he is a slow maturing dog.
When on the leash I would work on cooperation activities. He may be better off leash then on. I would pressure condition to the recall.

I would take him to a hunting dog trainer an see what they can do with him. Nothing like searching for game to wear out a dog, not to mentionall the socializing he would get.

I can tell already he has come a long way. I think he has thought in his mind that he runs the show. He still does. When he makes his little slip ups I correct him immediately and if he runs away from me when I call him (for instance in the house) I go over grab his collar make him sit and then say come and we walk to where I needed to go in the house (If you can give me a better way to do this please advise). I have been making him work for everything he gets/wants. Before we go outside all three dogs sit I open the door and say stay and then when they are all attentive to me I walk outside and so come on lets go. Same with food except I put it in front of them when they obey little things like that. He really is bullheaded.

He wont swim either... He wont go near our kiddie pool and the thing is our two dogs AND our cats like to get in it and swim (yes all our animals enjoy a nice swim).

Tonight is Charlies last night with us (he will be back in two weeks for another visit). I do need advice on one thing though cause I am close to pulling my hair out. He is being a big brat about coming when I call him inside the house (whenever he is outside he is on a check cord). He looks at you, turns, and runs the other way. When you get to him he plants his butt down and doesn't budge. Should I keep him on a check cord in the house? I don't want to have to have a check cord on him in the house. What should I do about this...???

It's an inelegant solution, but you could do what I did the other night: call once or twice, then if he doesn't come calmly walk him down (DO NOT GET MAD), grab him by the collar, and firmly tug him to the exact spot you originally called him from saying "COME" with each pull on the collar. When you arrive at the destination give him a couple seconds of calm in that spot, then praise him- "GOOD COME"- as if he'd come up with the idea.

The point is to communicate that he gets 1 of 2 choices: come when he's called the first time, or get rather unceremoniously drug to where he was called from. Either way he ends up right where you asked him to be. Dogs are VERY place oriented, and they seem to get this pretty quickly.

You'll notice I used a similar idea when he balked at getting in the car... with sled dogs you're loading and unloading constantly, so this sort of behavior gets REALLY old in a hurry. They all try it though, lol. Our answer has been to give a consistent "inside" command we use on all house and kennel and dog box doors, and if it's not immediately obeyed then they get slung inside anyway a la the indifferent baggage handler. Again, the learning curve is very, very fast... they'd MUCH rather go inside voluntarily and get a sweet word and a scratch than get stuffed in like suitcases at O'Hare!
