Don't read it to the baby then :)

Please keep in mind, other people get upset just like you do and I found this upsetting. And please don't withhold information and expect people to fill in the blanks and understand.

Is he posted yet on the shelter site? Do you have a link? Maybe some folks can cross-post the link to his adoption page on other forums or email it to friends. With an honest description as to what this dog needs.

Dan_ploof,

It took from August 2005 til July of 2006 before he stopped the RUNNING! So, almost a year, but I can tell you... IT WAS WORTH IT!

I can truely say that it seemed like it was never going to end. RUNNING.... FINDING. RUNNING... FINDING. But since that 14 hour romp...to this day I can open the double gates to the back yard (big enough to get RV in the back yard) and he sits there and just looks out to see the world on the other side.

He like wo watch the world go by, is what my husband says. I think he likes to look out and think to himself "There is no place like home".

Okay, obviously, I have too much time on my hands (don't tell my boss though) but here it goes.

This is what you state in a post from 6/10/09:

"His last issue, is he seems to have some anxitity when we leave, he has scratched up the door and other things."

This is what the ad on CraigsList says (unless it's not your ad):

"He doesn't have anxiety when you leave and learns new things very quickly"

Here is the link to the ad - BTW, beautiful dog!

utica.craigslist.org/pet/1234972592.html

I am not trying to be such a pain...but I am just curious. Were you able to help him with the issue?

I didn't read all the posts but if bolting is your problem it's kinda easy to fix.
If you want to give Max another try I can tell you how to fix bolting.

tessa,
good question. I am not certain how long Max lived with Dan and his wife. How they went about teaching commands and which commands they were teaching. The most important command for this dog, and quite frankly the only command I would work on, is 'here'. I would drill this command - in the house, thru doorways, halls, ect. Max's true issue is the 'here' command.

Francine, I agree. But if they were able to help him over the anxiety issue in just two weeks and he's a quick learner, then there should be hope to get a recall on him eventually.

I think the dog was adopted at the beginning of June.

pixie - My last post above was about the here command and how easy it is to teach, and even get to reliability. After Halo and her love of running, it is the first command I start with. Before Halo I was spoiled as I had never had a bolter. Thankfully, I no longer have to worry about her as she comes when called. She still loves to run which I hope to channel to my benefit in agility, but her focus on me and her recall are awesome. Thankfully, I didn't have a repeater with Ringo. He too loves to run, but he has been from the beginning a much easier dog to train. I hope they will reconsider and maybe give this dog another chance. I think they would also benefit from an obedience class. Another great way to channel that energy and wear a dog out. Mental exercise is just as good and important as the physical exercise with these dogs. My dogs are usually more exhausted after a good mental workout. At least, they don't bounce back quite as fast.

you had to tire him out in order for him to be food motivated outside.  When he was outside he was horrible.  I tried basic commands inside as well as come, and he would do it, but outside it was a whole different story, even with the check cord

by the way, this is the wife, and my husband should have said everything in the first post.  Even though he didn't there is no reason to say things such as, I rather cut my head off.  That's unncessary for us, the readers, and the dog.  Things like that will not find him a home.  He is at the Steven-Swan Humane Society in Utica, NY.  The number is 1-315-738-4357.  He goes by the name of Harry and the site.

Thank you.  He is a beautiful boy.  A little on the skinny side, but something to work with.   I think he has coon hound in him, which explains his stubborn behavior.  I meant on craigslist that he is very good in the kennel.  He actually lays in it when I am in the house.  If he isn't in the kennel, he will scratch at the door for a couple minutes when someone leaves and then settle down.  Dan isn't the best at describing things.

I don't see him!

"Things like that will not find him a home."

[Sighs]

Just make sure to describe him accurately to ensure he finds the right home. Please.

this is the last i will post, because officially i am no longer a gsp owner. Thank you all for the advice and support. Sometimes it's easier to say I would have done this and that, but no one will ever understand what Max and I went through. It's impossible too. That is not to take away from anyone else who has ever adopted an animal. Each one has their own story and problem. I want to remind everyone that i was fostering the dog. Not keeping it. But I shouldn't have done that either. Thank you for everything and try to understand.

he's also on the utica craigslist.  they might not have put him back on the site yet for steven-swan, but you can call them.  It might take a day or two to see his pics on that site, but you can see him on craigslist.

Yeah, I didnt see him on the shelter site either which is why I asked where he was located. I find it hard to believe that no rescue will take this boy. He doesnt sound impossible to work with.

Hmmm, looks like all GSP to me. Nice looking dog. I can't believe no one will take that boy.

As of yet I was not asked about the de-bolting method.
I can only guess you have given up on Max.
If the next step for him is death I would hope you would give the de-bolting method a try.
Anyway, why is he going by the name Harry?
Did he request a name change to hide his identity?
I am in NY and if you took him back I would meet with you and help you. We are in the Catskills every weekend. And I assure you,Max will not bolt with me,even off the leash. I have 'cured' a few bolters in just days.
