I know this has already been a thread but I have a some questions that I want opinions with further detail. We have a male that is five months old. We leave him in his crate during the day when we are not home. Charlie does not pee in his crate at night when he sleeps and does not pee in the house when we are home. His crate is block off enough so he has enough room to lay down, stand up, and stretch out. Here is his daily schedule:

4 am: Goes out with Husband for an hour (thats when husband gets up)

6 am: Eats breakfast and drinks his water (goes back out a half hour later to relieve himself)

4 am - 8 am: Out and about in the house planning and getting exercise

8 am: Goes into crate (I leave for work)

2 pm: Outside for an hour planning and getting exercise (I am home from work)

4 pm: Dinner

5 pm: Goes back out to play for an hour with us

9 pm: Goes back into crate for sleep

Charlie sleeps great at night in his crate no accidents or anything (he in fact prefers to sleep in his crate at night) but when we are gone at work he pees and makes a huge mess. It is really frustrating. I don't know why he is doing this I have contacted the person we bought him from and none of the other litter matters are doing this. Is he punishing us for going to work? If I put a stuff animal in his crate will that help? Does he have a anxiety probably? Help please. Charlie is getting three hours of good exercise a day and we don't know why he is doing this

Thanks!

Oh and at night we do leave the crate door open when he is sleeping in there (the crate is in our room) so he is choosing to sleep there. We aren't making him sleep in there at night.

Do you put him out just before you put him in the crate?  Does he pee?  Six hours is still a long time for a 5 month old.  So, what I would try is limiting his water an hour before you leave.  Then put him out for at least 15 minutes prior to putting him in his crate.  Make sure he pees while he is out.  Put him in his crate with something fun. Maybe a Kong stuffed with peanut butter, or something like that.  I would also leave the TV or radio on.  Good luck and be patient.  If you get upset, it will only make things worse.  Also, do NOT punish him when you get home if he has pee'd in his crate.  He will not know why you are mad.

I usually limit Leena's water intake in the morning before I leave for work or she would have accidents as well. She's about 6 months old. I let her gave almost unlimited water when I get home and will be there to let her out. It just sounds like he cant quite hold it from 8-2.

At that age my guess is the 8-2pm is just more than his bladder can handle.  Try making sure he goes good before his 8am lock up and that he gets no more water than enough to wet his tongue before he goes in.

The other likely issue is just separation anxiety.  Put the two together and you end up with a wet crate.

Is there anything we can do other then leave the tv on (which we already do) to help with his separation anxiety? Put a stuff animal in his crate?

I wouldn't put a stuffed animal in the crate as he will likely tear it up.  Instead I would work to create a going away ritual.  You could keep a kong around and stuff it with peanut butter and only give it to him when you put him in his crate because you are leaving.  Do not make a big deal about leaving.  Just call him, put him in the crate with the kong, and leave.  Also, when you get home he needs to be quiet before you let him out.  Again, do not make a big deal about coming home.  I usually come in and put my purse down.  Do a few things like read mail or whatever, then I go let my boy out of his crate.  All dogs then immediately go outside to potty.  My two girls have the run of the has because they are trustworthy.  My 11 month old male still has to go in his crate as he will get in trouble.

Good luck.  The separation issue will probably get better with age, just don't make a big deal about it.
