Welcome to
shorthairs.net
I'm looking into purchasing another shorthair to compliment my 2.5 year old female. I've done a lot of internet searching and talking and came across Top Gun Kennels out of Iowa. The website looks legit and I contacted some of the references listed and they had overwhelmingly positive things to say (but obviously those with poor experiences probably wouldn't be listed on the site).
The dogs on the site have fairly impressive lines (Most out of Hillhaven or Stradivarius). I'm planning on getting another female and will probably run her as primarily a pheasant / quail dog with a little early season waterfowling. I also plan on running her in hunt tests.
Does anyone know anything about the kennel? Any good or bad experiences? I'd sure appreciate any additional information before I commit with a deposit. Thanks!
Slayer, you might get a few private messages but other than that ,no negative public comets in this forum.
Which sire and dam are you getting a pup out of?
I'm sorry about that. If anyone has anything negative to pass on regarding the kennel or dogs, could you please PM me. Hopefully, the good stuff will come right out and I won't hear anything bad, but I just want to do as much research as I can before I commit.
The sires and dams haven't been chosen yet (to my knowledge anyway).
Slayer, Steve does a lot of testing with navhda, or did, you can go to navhda.org, click on test results on the left side and pick a year, go to shorthairs and go to the t's and see what all of his dogs have done in various tests. I think the last three years are probaby on there. You can call navhda and get a sire or dam report on any possible sires or dams of the litter you pup will come out of, it will show every pup ever produced by them (test scores).
I've heard nothing but good things about this kennel.
Another very good one is Sharpshooters kennel in Wisconsin, and Krystal creek kennels.
Both kennels are very big into NAVHDA.
I have been dealing with Top Gun Kennels for over six years and what I can tell you is they are producing dogs that can do it all duck blind, upland bird hunting etc.... I have two dogs of my own and have met a number of people all over the country that have them and everyone of them have been proud to own a Top Gun dog. The Ries family is bettering the breed and continue to look for ways to improve their breeding program. If you would like to know more feel free to call me and discuss.

Slayer, I reread my post . I didn't mean anything bad about Top Gun kennel. What I ment to say is, it would not be proper to say anything negative on a public forum about anyones kennel. Bad coments about anyone individual should be in form of a private message. I know Steve personally , he has a very nice core of bird dogs. I have sent several to Top Gun for a look see!!
Personally know of no one that has not been very happy with pup.
