Matt- Tundra and Moose were both doing catch it today at the lake WOOOO HOOOOO.. Can't wait to meet Mr. Gunther this weekend! We can have a GSP party in the pool. With Oskar and Sarah's sisters dog is coming I think who is a weim/GSP that looks all GSP I guess. That would be 5 GSPs! Go GSP power! Don't want to forget about Jake though. He is a jumping fool now. |

| I think there will be even more than that. I assume Jersey will be there but maybe not. I think there will be at least one other as well but I am not sure of the name. I'll probably be getting in the water to get Gunther in since he hasn't done it yet. I believe he went out in the lake far enough yesterday to swim but there were too many boats and jet skis and the waves were giving both dogs problems and they didn't want to play. |

| Where are these pictures taken. It looks like the lakes in Iowa. My brother bought a cabin on an Iowa lake and is moving there next year. I will have to take Molly and see how she feels about jumping. |

Thank you Lisa! As for training the poochies to do this it takes more than anything A LOT of patience! Matt who goes by Gunther on this message board can attest to this as well. GSP's are very smart dogs wich I think makes it a bit more difficult to train them to do this sometimes. I am working with slowly a female GSP up in this area who does not like to even swim. With my GSP's I have found what really gets them to swim first and formost is to just have a jelousy factor. We were lucky with our rescue dog we have. He is an American Pit Bull Terrier. There has been no training needed for him to jump. So when we got moose we let him spend all the time by the water with Rajah and eventually he started to swim. Just this spring has he started to jump. Whenever he swam and got his toy he got A LOT of praise and even treats. Such as hot dogs, biscuits, whatever your dog likes. Then this spring we kept on working and working and he started to jump from the bank of our pond at our house. We have now progessed to competitions and jumping at the lake as well. Our pond is too low to jump at right now so we are sooo happy to find this lake and the dock there. There has also been hours spent in the Ultimate Air Dog pool holding moose and letting him figure out swimming and how to get into and out of the pool through the exit ramp. This past winter moose started to go into the water off the exit ramp and jumping form that and that has also helped progress to him jumping off the dock in competition. He jumps consistently at the lake and home but isn't consistent at the events yet. It is a totaly different atmosphere there and there are crowds like you wouldn't believe. So far with Tundra the only thing really that I have tought her about getting in the water is how to swim well. The first day we had her at the lake and she went in I put my hand under her rear end and helped her keep it up. Once she figured out what that felt like to swim like that she has been a swimming fool! This is the stage we are at with the female GSP up here as well as her hind end tends to go down. Once they get confidence in swimming we progress to the lower dock which is the one closest to the camera in the moose picture at the lake. This dock helps as the dog doesn't have a huge drop to the water. They can kind of just flop in to get use to it. Like I mentioned in another post.... if your dog is leaning but scared of pushing off themselves give the dog a gentle nudge. I do mean GENTLE. No pushing or throwing the dog in. I do this still at competitions sometimes with Moose to encourage him to go in. Once they figure out they are not going to get hurt they start to LOVE jumping and swimming. Tundra now sits and shakes until I tell her to get the toy. My dogs have a lot of toy drive and love their Wubba's and Loopie toys. Our dogs love the Wubba's so much we have decided to start selling them at our website. PM me or email me if you would like more info on them as well. Our site is www.flyinghighk9s.com as well. This sport and dogs jumping is soooo adicting. I LOVE IT. I am also going to start a small training session if anyone is interested here in Michigan during the summer months too. PM me for more information on that as well! Please feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions or how to get involved with the sport. I would be happy to help! |

I laugh about the small nudge. My brother pushed his lab off the dock and it took him about a year after that to teach him to swim---who ever heard of a non-swimming Lab. |

Wow Tundra is doing great. I think Star watched too much Air Dogs at the Premier. The past few weeks I have been taking her to the lake and all she wants to do is jump in the water. She really likes her float dummy and is willing to do anything for it. |

Yes, I'm up in God's country as they call it, about 4 hours west of the bridge. I hope to go downstate sometime soon. I really want to get Star into dock jumping since she seems to really love doing it. My other shorthair has no interest in swimming in the water let alone jumping in.
Here are a couple I took of her last week.
