Just thought I would ask everyone else what they use as a regular ear wash for their GSP?? Sadie seems to get itchy ears often, had the Vet check them, and they are a little red inside, Vet seems to think she maybe prone to a swimmers ear, This sounds possible as she swims a lot. I remember in my dog grooming days we use to use a vinegar mixture to combat bacterial infections as a maintenance weekly wash, which was much better as a preventative than waiting for an infection to use a medicinal ointment.. |

http://www.doghealth.co.uk/eareyes.htm Thornit powder is legendary among pedigree dog owners in UK! A bottle will last for ages as you use a tiny amount (maybe once a week if ears are prone to infection or mites). At shows, I swear nearly everyone has a bottle stashed away in their bag. Just a little pinch (or use a small amount on a teaspoon handle) goes into the ear. Good stuff. |

Daniel & Layla both had terrible ear trouble last summer (nasty, gooey, stinky brown stuff everywhere) & the vet thought it might be swimmer's ear, but Layla isn't much of a swimmer. We finally figured out it was the food I was feeding (a very high-quality food that just didn't agree with them). Once I switched to another high-quality food their eaa cleared up in a few weeks.
I still swab their ears from time to time, because they both love to dig & they get dirt in there, but I haven't seen that nasty stuff since then. I keep a small bottle of the Oti... otimax? oticleanse? The ear goo the vet gave me, just in case. |

If you want to go more homeopathic, use 2 c distilled water, 1 c vinegar with 1/8th tsp of rubbing alcohol, a little dropper goes a long way, it helps to clean the ear, dry up any water and it is usable on both dogs and humans! Carrie |

Carrie, That's one of the solutions I have already tried, and poor Sadie cried, I think her ears were a little too sensitive for the alcohol & and the vinegar, so I don't think I will try that again, That's why I'm wanting to try something a little less potent TB, If the K-9 Solutions doesn't work, I put the Derma otic in my favs folder to access it if needed, Thanks |

I like Halo's ear cleaner too. http://shop.halopets.com/Grooming-Supplies/Herbal-Ear-Wash Lauralee, just FYI the liquid health cleaner is purple, (from the violet in it). Be careful with carpets and such. |

We use a little vinegar and warm water, swabbed gently with q-tips.
Once you start cleaning frequently you will find you don't need to clean them very often, an ounce of prevention and all that. |

Unless there's a structural problem or allergies the less you mess with the dog's ears the fewer problems you will have.
You can mix 1/2 tap water, 1/4 peroxide, 1/4 rubbing alcohol together. Warm to room temp, then put a couple of cc's in the dogs ear. Just massage it around from the outside, just like you were rubbing the dog's ears petting him. Then turn the head, wet ear side down and massageinside with a soft cloth. Repeat for the other side.
Do this after every swim and you'll have just about all of your problems solved, unles again, there are some structural/allergy problems causing blockage.
The wax that's inside your dogs ears serves a purpose. It is there to prevent bacteria and fungi from getting to the soft skin and causing infection. If you wash away that protection, you have real problems.
No one but a vet should stick anything in the ear canal smaller than your thumb, unless it's at the direction of your vet. There's way, way too much danger of causing far more of a problem by doing so, than you are likely to be correcting. |

| I clean Tessa's ears after each outing with a lot of running through woods and fields and swimming, I use Oti-Calm from the vet, it's very gentle, I put it on a cotton ball and just swipe the ear clean. Once a month, I drop some Oti-Calm into the ear canal, rub the base of the ear to loosen, and the swipe the excess - that is how it's supposed to be used, but like WildRose says, overdoing this can lead to more problems. |

| I use Lambert Kay EAR-RITE only when I notice the dogs ears starting to smell a littel bad, but sometimes it can be 6 months between cleanings. I just put the dog on their side and put about put 5-10 drops in the ear and rub it for as long as they let me. After a couple of minutes they shake their heads real hard and I take a paper towel and wipe out what I can see in the ear. I bought a 4 OZ bottle 5 years ago and still have 80% of it left. Sometimes when you have two or more dogs they clean each others ears and you don't have to worry about it. |

I use a vinegar solutions as well though I don't use regular vinegar I use apple cider vinegar. It helps prevent wax build up in the ear canal, prevent infections (mites etc.), and takes care of odor. I usually moisten a sturdy paper towel or tissue and get the worst of the gunk out (though there isn't usually much there). Then get the cracks with a q-tip being careful of course. Mix the AC vinegar with warm water and your dog will love you . After you've gotten all the wax out, dip a clean piece of tissue in the solution and gently squeeze the excess out then give the ear a final wipe making sure to get all around the inside. If your dog does a lot of swimming I'd recommend carrying a long a small rag so you can wipe out their ears after to make sure they are dry....nothing is more annoying or irritating than water in the ear. |
