Yes I put Rocky back in the house, ran for my camera and they were still there when I got back Didnot want the site or scent of Rocky to scare them off

Daniel would run screeching in the other direction if he ever saw that many deer! Ever since one attacked him & split open his side (and then went after me!) he has been terrified of deer & of all large dogs. Horses, however, don't seem to bother him... perhaps because they produce all that lovely manure he likes to roll in & taste...? GAG!

I am glad you are taking steps to get Belle back on the right track. I went through a rough spot with both my GSPs, but a time & training have really improved everyone's behavior (including mine!).

This weekend we did better we went for two long walks which was good for both the pups and my husband and I. Belle did better but then last night she piddled, again. At least she woke me up so I could get it cleaned up before she laid init. I am really interested to know what's going on with her. Dutchess is really excited to have all the smells... the grouse are out like crazy so her little nose doesn't stop. She can't wait to go hunting and neither can I.

My husband isn't crazy about giving her deer antlers to chew on so I'm wondering if this is a common thing to give dogs or not? Any sugguestions on that? I imagine it's better than the plastic going through her because she destroys anything that is plastic.

I guess my question is why is he worried? I prefer the deer antlers as they do not pose the danger that bones do. They don't splinter and they last forever. Also, the minerals from the antlers are good for the dogs. For power users they are great. Also, my oldest, Belle, is allergic to beef so she can't have beef bones. The antlers are sold online. I have not seen any sold in pet stores. I don't know how common they are though.

I guess I'd just through it out there... I thought it was a genius idea. I guess wife is going to trump husband on this one. Thanks for the help. Belle has a sensitive stomach, so that was his concern. We can't give them a lot of treats otherwise we pay the price in clean up.

Hi Belle!

Just my two cents on the deer antlers but seeing as Murphy has a bit of a sensitive stomach as well we've found that they are a Godsend!  They aren't your typical bone in that they sort of grind down into a fine powder and there isn't much for them to digest.  They last forever (Murf has had his now for just about a month and a half and it still is the same length as the day we bought it) even with my power chewer who can destroy an extreme Kong in less than 5 minutes!

Good luck to you and Belle and just remember that lots of excercise and stimulation will keep her happy (and you too! )!

Belle -  I don't give my dogs many treats because they get loose stool when I do.  Bones also cause a problem.  Plus, Belle is allergic to beef.  I have not seen any problems at all with the antlers.

I've heard of a lot of people buying the Antlers for their dogs, and I have yet to hear any complaints about them..

Since I've been hearing about those antlers so much I thought I'd give em a try.  The jumbo ones at the store were $25!!!!  It was maybe 7" long max.

So I looked on ebay and they are cheaper and bigger, so I'll try those. (link)

Also found some "Himalayan Dog Chews" that look promising, too. (link)

Marie -

I have some deer antlers like your wall antlers as well.  Also, have an antler lamp and an antler chandalier.  When Ringo was a puppy he was attracted to the antler lamp (prior to me ever giving him deer antlers to chew on).   I corrected him and he never bothered it again, but that was what gave me the initial idea that antlers might be a good option for chewing. I did worry that it might create a problem, but it didn't.

Well, my little lady was better today. She is starting to let me know when she has to go outside. My husband took them for a walk yesterday and they came across a grouse on the road. Dutchess, our wonder hunter, started to stalk it and then Belle came out from nowhere and ran after it. It is the first time, other than training, that she has showed any interest in birds and hunting. I wish I could have been there for that. My husband has agreed to try out the deer antlers, he is going to find one his sheds and we'll see what the outcome is. Belle got a bath last night and for some reason she seemed rather happy about it. Usually I fight her to the death to not drink all the water in the bath tub but last night she only drank what she could get when it rolled down her face. We had a little play time and worked on staying when told to stay. Not perfect but I'm working on her. My husband and I agreed last night that I could do whatever I wanted to try and help her for 6 months and if after that we don't see any response from her then we would find a suttable home for her. I feel confidant that we have finally decided that she is going to stay apart of our family. I owe it to that little baby of mine! She looked at me last night with what seemed to be such content, which I thought was a good sign. I am working on getting our outside kennel ready to go so that when it's nice outside they can go out there and play around. I'd like to make it bigger but I'll settle for them just being able to be outside. Thanks again for all the tips and ideas. Both Belle and I are so grateful to have found this site. It truely is a blessing!

Belle, That's great your seeing such improvement in your girl !!!! Keep up the exercise to tire her out , obedience and agility would be great for her as well.. These guys love having a job, It's what makes them tick.. I can tell your already seeing her signs of contentment, it will only get better with patience and commitment.. Remember there may be days that she doesn't do as well, but as time goes on those days will become few.. it will be all worth it in the end !!
By the way how does she listen off lead ????

idk my Lab is quite the power chewer. She can chew a 12" bully stix in about 5 minutes. It may take a normal dog longer with the Himy. Chews. They are really neat though and so healthy.

Well, today was a rainy day and very windy. We went outside for a walk for as long as my husband and I could take it. Belle did well today. She is listening but when we are on our walk so goes back and forth between all the water. Today she started to go for the water and then she would get a beep on her collar so then she would go to the next water puddle. She would stop and look at the puddle like she just couldn't help herself knowing that she was going to get either a beep or a shock if she went into it and started drinking it. It was rather funny to watch her think the entire thing out. Once she was told "no" she would look at me like I was being such a mean person.

To answer Lauralee... she does alright off the lead. We use electric collars and they seem to work really well. She responds to the beeps and when that doesn't work a low shock and she is fine. When called she doesn't return all the way back to me. She seems to think that she can come about 2 feet in front of me and then she go run again. Which she usually finds out that she's wrong.

Two more days until our trip to the vet. I'll keep you updated with answers and of course more questions. I learn so much reading all these forums and I love seeing all the pictures! I fall in love with my baby every time I see more photos of GSP's. They are beautiful dogs.

This really has me scratching my head.  Why get a dog at all if you aren't going to allow it to play and be a dog? Limiting a dog from doing the basic thinngs in it's nature which it considers to be fun to this extent I would really think is going to add up to a lot of problems for you in the future.

Now certainly it makes sense to break them from chasing deer and killing the neighbor's cats but not to even allow your dog to play in the water?  Why?

There's a reason I like dogs better'n people... .
