i just saw on the gspca site that there is a bill in ny state trying to outlaw tail docking...........

i was wondering if anyone has some good pictures that show what a gsp looks like without docked tail....just wondering--are they curled? straight? kinky? ....

i tried to look up uk breeder sites, but most of the dogs were several years old, so they were docked before it became illegal there....

Here is our Molly - our old mutt who is supposed to be 7/8 GSP - in her younger years. For me, the question of docking has nothing to do with looks. Long tails really suffer a lot of damage in most dogs...

I second Jeans comment on tail injuries.  I know how hard my crew plays and works and the injuries they have endured to other parts of their body.  I can't imagine what they would have done to their tails had they not been docked.

My older gsp is not a tail wagger and would probably do okay if she had a long tail. I see why they are docked and am glad they are for selfish reasons (house dogs with more moving parts=more broken stuff. Our 11 month pup is one of those if she is moving and especially hunting her tail it going a hundred miles an hour type of dog and hers would be a bloody mess if it were not docked. I guess since we don't know at 1-3 days old which type of dogs we will end up with the dock is the safer way to go.

Wow, I didn't realize how long the tail would be if it wasn't docked !!! I was always surprised at how long the Pointers tail was, and could never understand why they didn't dock their tails.

Yeah, they are like a whip. When mine are on birds their tails go like a hummingbirds wings. The tails would get broken in the woods!

The link has a photo of an undocked tail on a GSP.

This was posted on the forum a little over a year ago by lfb from the UK.

Not to discount any other GSPs but, IMHO Holly is one of the most beautiful GSPs that I have seen.

I'm with lauralee - I've never understood why English Pointers do not have their tails docked. There's an EP/GSP mix at my dog park who is just beautiful - tall, lanky, great markings and a long tail. I don't hunt, but I was under the impression that EP's and GSP's hunt differently - something about how close to the hunter they stay, how far they roam and whether they hunt singly or in packs (not sure about any of these)? Could the way they work in the field be why they don't dock EP's?

Life is not complete without a dog!

So this is just my wicked sense of humor and please don't anybody take offense, but maybe the German's are just more practical than the English.

Actually it probably is the way they hunt that makes a difference.

most people I know with English pointers use them for field hunting. Pheasants and such and they range way out. My GSP are pretty close hunters which is good in the thick grouse and woodcock terrain

geez i hadn't even thought of the damage from the crazy wagging tail... i'd have to worry about toddler getting 'whipped' as well as bowled over :)

but, i guess they do look decent as tails...just odd to my eye at the moment ....

Baron was a rescue and his tail isn't docked.  It's funny though, there seems to be a knot right where it should be docked.  When he points, the base sticks straight out and where the knot is, it's a little bit of a kink.

it's funny, in the tails I've docked long I see the kink where it's supposed to be docked sometimes.

Holly has a tail as do all non-working GSPs born after April 2007 in the UK. It's interesting to see a slight difference in tail length and thickness. Holly's is very 'whippy' (you should here the noise she makes wagging it next to the metal radiator!) but others I've seen are more waggy and thicker. She holds it straight out when running which scares the life out of me when she's playing rough with her brother or racing through bushes. It gets tucked right under her body if she's scared.

Holly is a very nice girl. I love her markings. How tall is she? The long tail sure looks funny to me. And I can understand why you worry about her tail. What happens if she hurts her tail and it has to be amputated, can you still show her?

My GSP has a 3/4 dock and I think it looks absolutely wonderful, if it were shorter I don't think I would like it as much. I know that with they way she wags it, it would do major damage to anything it came in contact with. Even with the little tail she has I have bruises to prove the power of their tails. However, my other dog GSP/Lab mix doesn't have her tail docked. Her tail seems to be softer, I don't know if it has anything to do with the Lab in her. But when we are hunting I think it would be benifical to her if it were docked. She gets it going so fast when she's on a scent that sometimes I think she might actually lift herself right of the ground and begin to fly. I don't know much about the reason's for or against the docking of tails but this sure has been an interesting post.

Not sure how tall Holly is. She was only about 6 months or so in the picture I think and is taller now. I think docking for medical reasons would be allowed if you informed Kennel Club. Plenty of working, docked GSPs are still shown, just not allowed at shows where public has to pay (which includes Crufts).
