With the arrival of my 2nd dog in just under 3 weeks, I was wondering is it gonna be easier to train her when she has another dog to watch and learn from as well?  What have those of you who have multiple dogs found?

I'm eagerly awaiting the day to go pick her up! Hopefully this weather in Wisconsin will finally realize that spring is here and bring us some warmer days so I can spend more time outside with the dogs..

it is easier to train a dog that has another dog showing the rules and the ropes!!! In fact I have used Macey to train other dogs for friends, and we used my mom's dog to help train Macey. Macey has been key in training all my dogs and the cat as well!!

I find that my older dogs show puppies the ropes and the routine. Things like house training, recalls are easier when others are doing it. Make sure to spend one on one time with the puppy and the other dogs. You don't want to think the puppy will always come when called because they do when the other dog is there and comes.....

Yes and No.  Yes in that the puppy will learn fromthe older dogs.  Dogs learn allot from watching and the older dogs will also show them the ropes as others have said.  The no part has to do with the dogs competitive nature.  This can also be a plus, but allot of times I see two dogs competing with each other and ignoring the owner.  You just need to reinforce that when you say something, they do it, or you make them do it.

Also, remember that while the experienced dog will learn the ropes of obedience...they will also learn the bad habits too...

I've always thought it is much easier to train a puppy when you have a well trained adult dog for them to learn from.

South,

I am glad you mentioned that ... I caught my whole crew (cat included) misbehaving last night, and it was a trick that Peppi (mom's dog that passed on back in 2000) taught Macey. So YES they teach bad habits as well as the good ones.

Thanks for the input everyone. I hadn't thought about Jed learning bad habits from Jasmine, and I can definately see it happening now, he likes to test his limits every once in awhile!

I did get another picture emailed to me last night, she is growing so fast!

OMG! She is sooooo cute!

We pick up our second dog on Friday ... although she isn't a pup, she will need some training too. I'm hoping Bo doesn't teach Shiraz too many bad habits :D
