Hi all. I just joined the forum yesterday. We are eagerly anticipating the arrival of a DK (puppies to be whelped 4/9). We lost our Shar-pei of 13 years last September, and this is actually the longest I have ever gone without a dog (I'm 41). However, I'm really nervous about owning a DK/GSP. Our Shar-pei was great, I've owned a Beagle, 2 mutts and a German Shep. (when I was a kid). I just want to make sure that I do the right things regarding training and exercise for our new member of the family. Not sure about hunting the dog, I hunt only rarely, but am thinking about becoming more active. My wife and I are pretty active people -- we both run (about 3 miles -- 2 to 3 times/week). I like to camp and hike (she would rather hike around the mall) and we have a 5 year old son. Any advice, tips, comments, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul |

Hi Paul, welcome. Which breeder are you getting your DK from? Any pictures? Francine |

Here's a link to the breeders website:
http://dkvonkingscrossing.com/
the breeding is between Hanna & Zunder -- there are pictures of both on the site along with many other dogs. Both Dam and Sire seem to have good traits. |

| Nice, but I didn't see any health clearances on the website. |

Actually, when we met with the breeder, he provided us with the clearances. Not sure why they are not on his website, but I took a look at a few other breeder's websites and didn't see the clearances listed there either. Is it common practice to do so? The breeder sent me copies (electronically via .pdf). |

pvstks Welcome to the forum. It seems your family is active so as long as you keep your dk active all should be well. We don't hunt our gsp. Can't wait to see some pictures |

The breeders I know in Texas list the clearances on their websites. My dogs are GSPs and come from hunting/show lines, and the breeders sites I am referring to are all similar. They are not, however, classed as DKs. Maybe that is the difference.
In any case, if they showed you the clearances that is just as good.
As others said, you will do fine with your new pup since your family is active. I would recommend obedience training though for you and your dog as soon as you can get him in a class. This will help you and the dog immensely. |

| The Clearances you would want are at least OFA Hips, OFA Heart, vWd, Thyroid, CD. |

Wow! Thanks for all of you help and support. As far as clearances go, I know that the Stud has OFA heart, hips & thyroid. The Dam has those, but PennHip (not OFA hip) clearance which, I think, is just as good. vWd was mentioned and, I assume, that is vonWillensomething's disease -- if so, there is a clearance on that too.
BTW -- obediance training has always been a must for me and my dogs. This one will be no different -- lol. |

Thanks all for your help... I will definately post pictures when available and will let you know how all is going. As far as a name, we believe that we will be getting a male (that is our preference), and we're thinking about "Wolfgang". |

| Welcome pvstks,, I took a look at your breeders website,, and I must say they are beautiful dogs.. You are picking the right breed for your families activity level, just keep in mind to let pup grow a little before hitting the road to run with him .. Good Luck, and don't forget the pics !!!!! |

As a matter of fact, our breeder runs a bit too (he's also an air force pilot) and he suggested that we shouldn't run with the dog until he is at least 10 - 12 months old due to something about the growth plates -- a lot of that is over my head, but I understand. He also suggested that we not run on pavement which may be hard to do for long distances. I live near a school that has a track we could use but that's a little boring. |

This breeder did a test on heart and thyroid? And vWd? Why?This is unusal for DK breeders? As these are not issues in europe.I don't think I know DK that has had an issue with vWd. I am surprised he is worried about growh plates, also. |

I'll need to ask, but wouldn't the growth plate issue be standard for all large breed dogs? |

Well, not really. It depends on the food you feed and how much exercise you give. While DKs are a large-(er) dog they are not more than 75lbs at adult. If you jogged 1/2 mile with a 3-4 month old pup or older I don't see an issue with growth plates. The pup is likely to do much more of that on his own during regular play/exercise time. Are you to limit play/exercise,as well? Do your plans include testing the dog in the German system? Do you hunt? There have been quite a few threads here recently that talk about bird and gun intro. Zunder is a good stud. |

Growth plates are the ends of the bones that lengthen as the pup grows. Once it has reached it's final size, they close up, so no more growing. That happens around 8-12 months. An injury during the growth phase can be really bad and potentially crippling. So my advice is, be really careful here, inform yourself (on this forum or online), there's plenty of safe exercise you can do with your dog so for me it's not worth taking the risk. I got Tessa as a companion dog, active lifestyle, but just kinda got hooked on the hunting aspect of this breed, so beware, you may end up bird hunting! Can't wait to see photos of your DK when it arrives. |

Well, I think that 1/2 mile is quite fine -- as I mentioned in earlier posts, my wife and I tend to run around the equivalent of a 5k (3.1 miles) 2 - 3 time a week and, in the spring, will go for a 5.5 mile run on weekends. I think that is too much to expect from a pup until the 10 - 12 month mark. I pretty sure that is what the breeder mentioned. I may hunt the dog and have hunted in the past. I haven't been bird hunting in about 10 years. We'll see what happens. |

TesaGA, yeah, but you can't put the puppy in a bubble. If you saw what my dogs have done before 8-10 months old you would wonder about growth plates for sure.LOL. |
