I never had a dog that cared for a Nylabone, Tessa is the first one. Got her one last week. It says on the package "replace when knuckles are worn". Well, the bone was $ 10 and the knuckles are already worn after one week.

Is it still safe for her to chew on it? I can't replace this every week. I usually give sterilized beef bones, I know some folks don't like them but I never had any problems with them, and they wear much slower, lasting months.

She killed the kong in one hour.

Will try deer antlers next.

i just gave my two deer antlers two weeks ago and they have barely put a dent into them. it was a small rack and i hacked off all the points on each side. they absolutely love them, the only problem is that lola wants lilly's and lilly wants lola's. there could be five hundred of them on the floor and they'd fight over one. as far as kongs go if you live near an academy they sell a kong like toy that is shaped like a squirrel. lola has had it for 6 months and it is still intact (even after being nawed on by her lab friend charlie). the best thing is that the squirrel is about half the price of one of those kongs.

TessaGA,

I always have Nylabones kicking around in the house. It's about the only thing that doesn't get destroyed in a few minutes. I always get the extra strong ones for power chewers. Some we have had for years and thses are quite a bit smaller or thinner than they once were. I would monitor the Nylabone for any loose pieces and watch for getting too small. My dogs will pull teeny bits off but have never had this be a problem.

Yes, tiny bits are coming off...the knuckles have all but disappeared. They say the tiny bits up to the size of a kernel of rice "should" pass through fine and I believe they do. I still wonder, that's a lot of nyla passing through my dog in a week...

Any good sources to order antlers (don't think I'd be lucky enough to find in the woods).

What kind of academy sells those squirrels?

I have been using the deer antlers now for a couple of months, and they are lasting better than anything else I have found.  I got the large from PetExpertise (www.petexpertise.com/dog-toys/antler-chews.html), and they have done fine.  Like auwallace said though they all want the same one.  I got three (one for each dog) and one has been chewed on the most.  They have whittled it down (it was about 10 inches and is now about 8 inches).  It does not split or break, and it has been dropped on cement several times. It just grinds down into a powder.  The dogs teeth are also nice and clean.

Belle and Halo don't like the nylabones.  Ringo loves them, but can destroy them in less than a day.  He has also gone through Kongs and Orca toys in the same way.  Bones he tends to crack, even big ones.  The deer antlers though are holding up to his power chewing.

For Tessa, you might want to try a Galileo bone (see Petsmart or various online places). I have one that can destroy a Nylabone in MINUTES. This is the only thing she can't get through. We have one we've had since she was a pup and she's seven years old now. It's as hard as stone, seems to me like it would be no more fun than gnawing on concrete, but she loves it.

Have you guys ever seen these? www.goughnuts.com We saw them at a pet shop in Atlanta. They are solid black or green rubber and when (or if) the dog chews down to where it shows red rubber, that means to replace it. You can send it back to them and they send you a new one free! I didn't get one because they were pretty expensive but I wish I had.

Ashley - Thanks for posting that link.  I looked at it and decided to try the black one for tough chewers.  My boy has destroyed just about every toy I have tried, even tires.  Hope this one works.  Otherwise all he is getting is deer antlers.

That looks interesting...I like that they float. Will try those, and the galileo, and the antlers, and the kong squirrel if I can find it...

Cool Bev! Let me know how it is. I didn't even realize they float, that would be a good pool/beach toy. I've never heard of giving dogs deer antlers, I'll have to order some of those too!

I've also found that any rubber toys made by West Paw Design seem to hold up pretty well to my little power chewer.

Casey's nylabone lasted 2 months.
Her favorite and most durable toys are the JW Pet Ruffians. She chews and squeeks the heck out of them and can't seem to puncture or tear them.
We heard allot of people talking about the kong wubba. Well, it lasted a week, but the squeeky larger ball inside of the wubba has lasted a few months.

Rocky has been turbo chewing these 4 different shape of nylabones since December 10th on a nightly basis. At times I spread some low fat cheese spread to make them more interesting. Can see which one is sturdier. Ordered from Drs Foster & Smith

Tessa:
SORRY! By academy, i meant Academy Sports and Outdoors.......its a large sporting goods store with a larger selection than dick's with cheaper prices. There should be locations in Georgia, i know they are in alabama, tennessee, louisiana, texas, and a few other southern states.

auwallace, after a few hours LOL I figured you meant the store, we have one here in town, I was there a few weeks ago and DID see some interesting dog toys I had not seen before, and I think I remember that purple squirrel. I will take another look.

Marie: Tessa has the bone on the left, and the knuckles are gone entirely. I bought it one week ago. I like that it gets kinda textures, which helps clean the teeth.

I've been wondering the same thing myself about these Nylabones... Murphy has the 1st and third ones pictured (Thanks Marie!) and has been chewing non-stop on them since the end of December. We decided just the other night to take the non-traditional bone shaped one away from him when we noticed blood spots on it (his is white). It seems like the ends were so roughed up that they were tearing his gums or the roof of his mouth. So now I'm on the hunt for something else...
Kongs are useless, he ripped the top off an Extreme black one in 10 minutes... I'm hesitant to try the deer antlers... do they have a distinctive odor? I only ask this becuase we have tried the pig hooves and such before...and my goodness do they stink!

The only thing that got us through the year one chewies were bull pizzles and cow hooves. And unfortunately, the do smell.

The good news? Little mister dynamo chewer seems to have outgrown that for the most part. He does like to chew on a bone while we watch tv, but he is not the frantic chewer he was as a pup.

I believe the deer antlers are odorless, the description looks very appealing, I wonder why not more people know about them.

No smell to deer antlers.  I have three that my gang are working on.  The don't splinter either.  My power chewer loves them.  In fact, he is chewing on one right now.  I never leave home without the antlers.

As of yesterday afternoon Murf is now the proud owner (destroyer?) of a deer antler. He LOVES it! My goodness... He has carried it everywhere with him, including out of the store thru the parking lot to the car... He even slept with it last night! He is a happy boy... And so are we! This thing looks like it's going to last and no smell! Yay! :o)
Thanks everyone!
