Max our recently adopted GSP has developed some kind of eye infection. It started yesterday with a tiny amount of discharge. He always has something around his eyes so I wiped it off. But today it got worse. I got back after an evening out and he actually has a red bottom eyelid, slightly puffed up with a fair bit of discharge. He is going to the vet first thing tomorrow but just wanted to check if you fellow GSP owners have any experience with this? I have had many dogs and never come across an eye infection.

We spend a lot of time at the beach with Max and two days ago was his first visit with us to a forest.

It could It could be anything from a grass seed in there to a scratched cornea from blundering through brush to ???

If it were ME, I wouldn't wait a full day- eye problems heal very quickly when properly taken care of, but they also go downhill quickly until then and are EXTREMELY painful. I've been known to keep calling until I get hold of a vet that will see me ASAP in that sort of situation... although to be honest, I've never had a vet put me off for an eye injury.

Antibiotic eye ointment is a first aid staple at our house, and if dogs have been crashing around in brush a lot we check their eyes carefully when we come back in and goop it up if we have any reason to believe something is going on. If it looks like the eye is worse within a few hours, it's off to the vet without hesitation.

I had a cat that got frequent eye infections. It alsways worked to put a warm wet tea bag on it. Sounds crazy, but worth a try? I think it has something to do with the caffeine. I do agree with Meg too. It should be watched since it can turn to something serious quickly, but hopefully (fingers crossed) It's nothing. Good luck, Andrea

Glad to hear it wasn't anything serious! We've had a bout of conjunctivitis go through the two dogs I had at the time soon after attending a sled dog race. It makes the rounds.
