Got in from a good morning in the woods and my GSP began to act odd.

First started to shake some and then drool real bad.  He has since thrown up 3 times and continues to drool.

Besides the obvious of going to the emergency vet on a sunday any other options right now?  Not that this is out of the question..but $$$$ is a bit tight for a visit to the emergency room with him.

Thanks

Bob

I would take him to the vet immediately as he could have eaten something.  The drooling and shaking can be signs of poisoning. Let us know how he does.

I'd go to the vet immediately.....aside from poisoning, it could be torsion or a blockage from swallowing something he shouldn't have. (sock....underwear, etc).
Not trying to scare you here, but my ex BF recently lost (last week) a young dog to complications from swallowing a hunk of plastic, he was only 5 yrs old. It perforated his bowel causing a severe bacterial infection.
(broke my heart, I whelped him, he was raised in my house -they just moved out 6 mnths ago)
Hopefully it's just a digestive upset and nothing serious, but don't chance it, see a vet!!

Yea i did take him in. When we got back from the field he threw up 4 times within an hour was shaking and drooling very VERY bad.

Figures; as soon as we get in the ER the drooling slows as does the shaking. Vet did X-rays and nothing too conclusive showed up. There was a good deal of gas and something in his intestine but it doesn't seem to be anything like wood, metal or bone. Vet said it could just be stool. In any event he got a IV (big ole hump back) to help with the dehydration and will be on a bland diet for a week. Also gave him some meds to help with the sore belly.

He has an appointment with my regular vet tomorow for some shots, so i will see what she says.

Man it was terrible to see him so sick. I sure hope he poopes out something for piece of mind.

You could give an at home enema if you are comfortable with it. My boyfriend has a rescue mutt that proceeds to eat everything and anything and gets backed up sometimes there is vomit but mostly he looks bloated, his tummy you can feel is all tight, and he just shakes. We always just give an at home enema to get through the weekend until we can see our vet. (Don't much care to go to emergency vets) And we *knock on wood* have never had complications from doing so. Just something to keep in mind for next time.
But I hope everything turns out ok and he starts to feel better soon.

last fall, Rocky was all day in the woods while the guys worked on their deer stands. Shortly after Rocky began acting droopy, drowly too and thowing up. He could not keep a thing down Saturday, Sunday. Into our Vet monday morning with Rocky. She ran a few blood tests and diagnosed him with pancreatitis. What a scare when our GSPs are sick and we donot know what is wrong. You are in our prayers. Hope you have a good night and are not up too much with your GSP throwing up. Keep us updated on how things go.

Hope Killian is feeling better.
It sounds like he ate something but it could have been that he was over worked.

I think you did the right thing taking him in. I always try not to jump the gun...throwing up is one thing...shaking and acting strange another. I get so worried that I end up taking them in, the peace of mind is worth the money to me.

This reminded me of the scare I had with Sadie last fall. We were walking on one of our familiar trails when she suddenly came running back to me screaming and spinning in circles. As she got closer I could see that she was covered with bees !!!! Thank God she knew enough to run back to me instead of running and trying to hide in the woods !!! When she got to me , I started rubbing her down to get the bees off her. I thought that I would get stung, but I didn't care , I was more concerned with her. I managed to get them off and ran her to the river near by to make sure they were all off her. I put her in the water, and some bees were still swarming around, I kept her in the water splashing her until all the bees were gone. I knew then I would have to get her to a Vet fast !!! She started to swell where all the bees had stung her. I hurried as fast as I could, because I was still about 1mile from my car. By the time we got to the car, she was walking funny, and had trouble lifting her head. Thank God my Vet is just down the road. By the time we got there, her ears were 1 inch thick from the reaction, and she couldn't lift her head. The Vet rushed her in, and gave her 3 shots( cortisone & benadryl) Just to let you all know, I learned that day , that dogs don't present the same anaphylactic shock that people do when stung by bees. Instead of becoming respiratory compromised, dogs present a neurological reaction. The Vet told me that it still is life threatening. She had been stung a total of 30 times, and would have died if I hadn't taken her to the Vet.

I carry a shot with cortisone in it for Belle who reacts to anything that stings her.  She was first stung when she was 6 months and it has been down hill from there.  She also has a knack for finding stinging bugs.  My vet gave me the shot and told me to give it to her under the skin and then 4 benadryl and bring her in.  This gives me time if we are out and about. The good news is the shelf life on the cortisone shot is a year and a half. The scary thing with Belle is she always gets it in the face and her face really swells fast. Hopefully I won't have to use it, but it is nice to have just in case.

My previous dog once stepped onto something - I think it was a spider, vet thinks it may have been a small snakebite - on top of a mountain. Leg swelled up and turned purple and she started having tremors all over. I couldn't find a bite and never heard her yelp so I didn't think snake bite and I made her walk down that mountain - couldn't carry her. Thankfully a small mountain, 30 minutes from the car. But: 3 hours from home! She didn't seem to get worse so we drove home (Sunday) and next day I took her to the vet who gave her antibiotics and lectured me about not taking her to the nearest emergency clinic (didn't know where one was, as I was in an unfamiliar area).

So since then, I carry benadryl, and prednisone (although you are not supposed to give it for snake bites), and ALWAYS keep a list of vets and their phone numbers near our destination.

Since I live in snake country I do two things with my dogs to help in case of snake bite.

1) All my dogs get the rattlesnake vaccine.  You give it the first time and then a booster a month later, after that it is every 6 months.  It costs me $88 for three dogs.  It isn't a cure, but it buys time to get the dogs to a vet.

2) Snake avoidance training.  Most only do rattlesnake, but I have a trainer that does rattlesnake, copperhead and water mocassin.  Those three snakes are the poisonous snakes in my area of Texas.  I worry most about rattlesnake because of where we hike and secondly about water mocassins as they are in all the waterways in the area, and my gang loves to swim.

I thought if you snake trained a dog they would leave all snakes alone.  Not so, apparently the snakes all smell different.  To prove it to me the trainer trained Belle to avoid rattlesnakes and then put a water mocassin out.  She went right up to the water mocassin.  I also do a refresher with my dogs every year or so, just to reinforce that those snakes are bad.  It works too, Belle can scent a rattlesnake from a good 50 feet of so away and she makes a beeline in the opposite direction.  Halo will get between me and the snake and push me away.  Still need to get Ringo snake trained.

Wow Bev, I forgot about Texas being poisonous snake state. I would be afraid to bring my dogs out knowing what could happen. Since Sadie's bee episode, I do carry benadryl, but I never thought to ask my Vet for a prednisone injection, because I know if she gets stung again she will have a worse reaction..... " Note to self; Ask Vet for this injection when I'm there tomorrow to drop Ruby off to get spayed "

lauralee, I did ask my vet for prednisone after my episode and he refused, because it's a bad thing to give for a snake bite (making things worse) and I may not be able to judge correctly when to give it and when not which is probably true in some cases. In the case of the bee attack though it would be obvious, right?

I don't know about where you guys live, but here it is pretty easy to distinguish between a sting and a snakebite.  If I was unsure I wouldn't give the shot, but for a sting it sure does help.

Bev, that's what I thought. When Milka limped off the mountain, I was sure it was a spider bite. There were no puncture wounds, no wound or bite at all, I didn't see any snakes and she had been on a leash. Yet the vet suspected a snake bite, looking at the leg the next day.

I live in Georgia, and while we do have water moccasins mainly and some copperheads, and rattlers down south, we are not as infested as you guys are in Texas, I don't think so. It's a concern though for me now that I have a dog that will range through some fields. Would love to get her snake trained.

Bev & Tessa, You can usually tell a bee sting. It forms a bubble of fluid right under the surface of skin. This is caused by the body's reaction to the venom. The swelling occurs almost immediately. Sadies ears were stung the most, her whole ear leather was about 1 inch thick by the time I got to the Vet. The rest of her body was covered with the fluid filled lumps. It was a nightmare !!!! By the time I got her to the Vet , she looked terrible !!
The shots worked fast . within 15 mins all the lumps were gone, It was amazing !!

Well Kilian is back up in running order.  When i got him home from the ER he was pretty low key and just slept all night on my lap on the couch.  I took today off from work to monitor him and take him to our normal vet this afternoon.

By mid-noon'ish i was convinced that he was back to himself.  We went out front since it was nice and sunny and warm today and did some fetching for about 30 min.

My vet checked him out and said he seemed fine.  She had a feeling that the pooper he took just before i loaded him to take him to the ER prob passed whatever was bothering him.  He did get dehydrated pretty bad; so the IV was good for him.  He is now 53lbs and in good health though she said he is thin.  Dang dog eats 6 cups of Purina Pro Plan High Perf a day!  I got to looking at him under the lights and did have to agree as his ribs are showing and hips.  Well he got some updated shots and checked over and all is good.  We are gonna add some real chicken to his diet and proceed as normal.

Thanks for all the concern guys (and gals).
