I hear Obama is looking to get either a labradoodle or a Portugese water dog.
My vote is for the Portugese Water dog.
Bet they get the labradoodle.
What's yours?

Oh Gosh. I take it back. Maybe getting the designer breed is better. Another good, or should I say bad, example of how and why breeds get ruined. |

NEITHER!!!
PWD - They "want to adopt a dog from a shelter." Good luck finding one of the rarest breeds in america in a shelter!!
Labradoodle - FABULOUS, let's encourage everyone to breed and buy a "designer" breed just like the president did!!!!
Doesn't this guy have advisors?!?!?! |

Oh Bev, You said my thoughts exactly. If Obamas were dog people, they would have a dog already. Our first child dog was Poge, a GSP. Poge was 5 years old when our first child was born. We were Dog people from the "get go" even before our children were a thought!! |

Hey, Buddy was hit by a car when a contractor left the Clintons' door open. There's no reason to believe he wasn't well cared for and loved in AND out of the White House. Its not as if they turned him loose on the streets!
I recently saw an Animal Planet special on White House dogs and it looks like most of them were having a blast. |

Well the Obamas are MORE than welcome to borrow my crew. 'cuz I know I'd get them back in 30 seconds, lol! They'd probably start off creating some security disaster by trenching up 50 feet of wiring from under the white house lawn, then move on to gunning down birdies/kitties on full planet-wide TV coverage, and afterward decorate at least 3 staffers and 5 reporters with muddy foot/nose prints. ... and it would just go downhill from there, lol... |

when this topic is breeched sometimes i can't see beyond the subtext of political nonsense.
They are a family and if the kids want a dog, they deserve a dog. I made the same deal with my parents when we moved and I was eleven. If we move I get a puppy. Look at me now, a loyal dog owner who is fully committed and it started when I was very young. This also applies to the families that want puppies to raise along side their young children and have them grow up together. I think it is all very important and people should be able to make their own decisions and not be faulted for those who do get into pet ownership not knowing what they are doing. Yes there are many dogs in shelters and the majority of dogs aren't treated like the dogs on this board, but that doesn't mean we fault everyone who wants a dog because they don't think and act like us. |

I smuggled a mixed breed puppy home from a school fair when I ws 12-years old. My parents were furious, as we already had a mutt who was devoted to my Dad. We struck a deal that I would take the pup to be trained. Here I am, many years later, a devoted dog owner, rescue volunteer. More power to the Obamas for adotping from rescue. PWDs are pretty well-known in this area and are far less rare than many other breeds. I am hopeful that their adotping from rescue will highlight breed rescues and encourage others to adopt from rescue or help rescue. Eleanor in NJ |

Thank you Emily. It seems to me if the President wanted to adopt "one of the rarest dogs" he would have the resources to do so (or at least I hope) I would much rather a dog be rescued by a family that took time making a decision then someone who adopted on a whim and simply wasn’t prepared for the dog. Something tells me that a dog living in the Whitehouse will make out just fine.

I guess I am just not convinced that Mom and Dad Obama are dog people. After all one article I read said the kids had been asking for a dog for a while. I know the kids have allergies, but what is different today than a year ago, they are now in the White House. In recent times the presidents I consider dog people showed up at the White House with dogs in tow:
Kennedy:
Welsh Terrier - Charlie and Pushinka
German Shepherd - Clipper
Irish Cocker Spaniel - Shannon
Irish Wolfhound - Wolf
Terrier - White Tips, Blackie and Streaker
Johnson:
Mongrel - (Yuki)
5 Beagles - Beagle, Little Beagle, Him and Her and J. Edgar
White Collie - (Blanco)
Nixon:
Spaniel (Checkers)
Irish Setter (King Timahoe)
Terrier (Pasha)
Poodle (Vicky)
Ford:
Golden Retriever called Liberty who gave birth to nine puppies at the White House Reagan:
two dogs, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel called Rex and a Bouvier des Flandres called Lucky
Bush:
Springer Spaniel called Millie and her puppy named Ranger
Bush:
2 Scottish terriers named Barney and Mrs. Beasley and an English springer spaniel named Spot
I was raised in a family that had dogs before I was born and we were never without a dog or two or three. Some were rescues and some were pure breds, but always we had dogs. I didn't have to ask mom and dad for a dog, I was taking care of dog as soon as I was old enough.
As for contractors letting the dog out, well I have had a bunch of contractors at my house when I remodeled and the dogs were always locked up or taken over to my mom and dad's house so there was never a risk of them being let out. In my opinion that is part and parcel of taking responsibility for you dog. I'm not saying accidents don't happen, but good owners anticipate and take measures and a dog person would do this without a thought. |

Not to get in a huge argument here, and I agree that the above mentioned presidents were super dog owners, but I think now versus one year ago, is a home where they will be for the next four years, versus a more uncertain future last year. As to the obligations of being a good dog owner, obviously, we all agree on that. But I have made my share of HUGE mistakes. I left a door open many years ago and my German Shepherd got out. Luckily, he loved the car and did NOT wander onto the busy road I lived on at the time. Instead, I found him snoozing in the back of my station wagon. I had (luckily) left the back of the car open! Another time, I could not find my Sheltie and I discovered him sitting patiently on the cellar stairs, waiting for me to open the door I had so rudley shut in his face a few hours ago! And there was the time I moved into my curent house - 20 years ago. I had a brand new fence put up, but my then GSP would push and push and get out under the fence. And my young GSP decided to start jumping. I had to invest a ton of time and money to raise the fence and buy railroad ties to block the bottom. I fished both of them off the road, my heart in my throat. And then there was the time one of my then elderly GSPs wandered out an open door and spent the night in the local vet hospital, which is where the dog officer puts dogs he finds wandering around. I could go on and on. But I wish the First Family well and I hope everything works out. And I do think the rescue message they are sending and the time they have spent thinking about this, sends a good message. Eleanor in NJ |

Just because the Obama parents aren't dog people, doesn't mean that their children shouldn't have the opportunity to experience what we all have,,, " The unconditional love of a dog" My parents weren't dog people either, but I'm glad they allowed me to have one at the age of 5. I've been an animal lover for as long as I can remember, and I don't think you need parents to be dog lovers for you to be one. I think of how important my dogs were to me throughout my life, and can't imagine what life would have been without them. I'm glad my parents allowed me to experience something they never did. |
