Oh well, I guess Casey is destined to be outside of the "breed standard". Even though she might not have "Barbi girl" measurements and isn't destined to be a runway model, we still love her.
Actually she is a little fat. However living where you do if the dog is outside much at all during the fall/winter/early spring she needs it.
However a d dog that lives indoors and/or lives in a moderate climate and is worked hard should be much leaner to be "fit and in field shape". |

| Winter is a tough time. We still have a ways to go in trimming Rocky to 75 lbs. Good news, a 2 year old Border Collie with high energy is going to join our Spring morning doggy walking group. Always nice to have another high energy dog to spark the older dogs in the group along. There are some fatty Labs who will need to walk and trot off a few Winter pounds!! |

| In general leaner is better than bigger; according to my vet, it is the number one thing one can do for the dog to support good health. And even more so than with humans, it is much easier to avoid the extra weight than it is to take it off. Dogs on a diet can be slow going. Congrats to Rocky, he's looking good! |

Good work Rocky! And now for the rest of us. You do look good. We have cut back on Juno's food by about 1/2 lb. I think that perhaps we were over estimating his activity level, especially in the winter. He has definately slimmed up. Juno wishes that you lived closer to us, Rocky, so that he could play with someone his own size. That would help keep them both slimmer. |

| Is it true we are supposed to see the last 2 ribs on our GSPs?? Just thought that 2 rib rule was true for the Sight Hounds. I know we should be able to feel the ribs of our Shorthairs. I feel both Juno and Rocky would be perfect weight at 75lbs. Juno, 75 lbs because of his broad chest and bigger bones. Rocky, 75lbs because of his 27 height at the withers. (Good thing Rocky is not a show dog as he would be severely penalized). It will be interesting when Rocky reaches his goal of 75 lbs if I can see any of his ribs. I see a hint of his ribs sometimes when he is laying on his side on our bed and the sun light shines on him. |

| I don't see how Casey is overweight. We can see virtually all of her ribs and the veins in her legs and hips. I was actually worried that she was a little too thin. |

Thanks for the compliment. We are new to the breed and do think that Casey is perfect. I am anxious to see how she develops in the next 6 months. I am not sure what to expect because she was just spayed 2 weeks ago and I have heard allot of theories that might hinder her in developing muscle. BTW - sorry for the double post. I am fairly new at this and I couldn't get the picture to show correctly. |

Marie asked: Is it true we are supposed to see the last 2 ribs on our GSPs?? The answer is most definitely yes. Here are a couple of photos of some of ours in what I would consider tip top shape:

Having said that though, now that Rocky has been through a period of being fat, you may have a hard time ever getting back to ribs being just under the skin. Once you make fat cells, you can shrink them, but you can never eliminate them.

| Thank you DessertRose. You certainly have a beautiful GSPs. They look very solid and muscular even with ribs showing. So rib showing doesnot mean too thin or emaciated to clarify and clear right size up for Wolfe and the rest of us. I am just greatful Rocky is down to almost his goal weight, I can feel his ribs, see more curvature in his waist and see him move with more vigor and agility in the field. |
