Oh well, I guess Casey is destined to be outside of the "breed standard". Even though she might not have "Barbi girl" measurements and isn't destined to be a runway model, we still love her.

Actually she is a little fat.  However living where you do if the dog is outside much at all during the fall/winter/early spring she needs it.

However a d dog that lives indoors and/or lives in a moderate climate and is worked hard should be much leaner to be "fit and in field shape".

There's a reason I like dogs better'n people... .

Winter is a tough time. We still have a ways to go in trimming Rocky to 75 lbs. Good news, a 2 year old Border Collie with high energy is going to join our Spring morning doggy walking group. Always nice to have another high energy dog to spark the older dogs in the group along. There are some fatty Labs who will need to walk and trot off a few Winter pounds!!

In general leaner is better than bigger; according to my vet, it is the number one thing one can do for the dog to support good health. And even more so than with humans, it is much easier to avoid the extra weight than it is to take it off. Dogs on a diet can be slow going. Congrats to Rocky, he's looking good!

Good work Rocky! And now for the rest of us. You do look good.

We have cut back on Juno's food by about 1/2 lb. I think that perhaps we were over estimating his activity level, especially in the winter. He has definately slimmed up.

Juno wishes that you lived closer to us, Rocky, so that he could play with someone his own size. That would help keep them both slimmer.

Rocky wishes too Juno lived closer . They would definitely be 2 bookend Big GSPs!! We too thought that Rocky was solid muscle at 93lbs. Rocky was bigger than the 2 hugh Labs in our Morning walking group. Yes he stacked up to the Labs and only got knocked down once boxing up to the 103 lb Lab while playing in the field Best wishes trimming Juno down. Still young at 3 years old!! Looks like Juno and Rocky are the BIG BOYs on this Forum. Hopefully being th biggest losers in lbs on this forum. Think Rocky still holds the record for being the biggest Loser 93.3 lbs-77.9 lbs = 15.4 lbs weight loss

Is it true we are supposed to see the last 2 ribs on our GSPs?? Just thought that 2 rib rule was true for the Sight Hounds. I know we should be able to feel the ribs of our Shorthairs. I feel both Juno and Rocky would be perfect weight at 75lbs. Juno, 75 lbs because of his broad chest and bigger bones. Rocky, 75lbs because of his 27 height at the withers. (Good thing Rocky is not a show dog as he would be severely penalized). It will be interesting when Rocky reaches his goal of 75 lbs if I can see any of his ribs. I see a hint of his ribs sometimes when he is laying on his side on our bed and the sun light shines on him.

I like to be able to see the last couple of ribs on my dogs.  That seems to correspond to a good weight for them.  Any heavier and they have a hard time going all day in the field or hiking, any lighter and they start looking a little immaciated.

Oh, here is a pic of Rocky at 12 months old. He weighed 72 lbs We should have kept him at that weight Oh if we had only known. Maybe 72 lbs should be our goal???

Marie -  Rocky was and is a beautiful boy. For his weight I would focus not on the number so much as on how he looks.  Once he looks good, slim and trim, you can see that last rib or so, then weigh him.  That will be Rocky boys ideal weight. Once spring gets in full swing and he is running and swimming again regularly, I bet he drops those last few pounds.  You should be really proud that you caught his pancreatitis and have done a great job with his diet.  I know Rocky loves his mom for taking such good care of him.

I don't see how Casey is overweight. We can see virtually all of her ribs and the veins in her legs and hips. I was actually worried that she was a little too thin.

Casey looks absolutely perfect What a beautiful girl Keep doing whatever you are doing with Casey cause it is working!! She will develop more muscle and may broaden a bit especially in the chest and hip areas as she grows older.

Thanks for the compliment. We are new to the breed and do think that Casey is perfect. I am anxious to see how she develops in the next 6 months. I am not sure what to expect because she was just spayed 2 weeks ago and I have heard allot of theories that might hinder her in developing muscle.

BTW - sorry for the double post. I am fairly new at this and I couldn't get the picture to show correctly.

Marie asked: Is it true we are supposed to see the last 2 ribs on our GSPs?? The answer is most definitely yes. Here are a couple of photos of some of ours in what I would consider tip top shape:

Having said that though, now that Rocky has been through a period of being fat, you may have a hard time ever getting back to ribs being just under the skin. Once you make fat cells, you can shrink them, but you can never eliminate them.

Thank you DessertRose. You certainly have a beautiful GSPs. They look very solid and muscular even with ribs showing. So rib showing doesnot mean too thin or emaciated to clarify and clear right size up for Wolfe and the rest of us. I am just greatful Rocky is down to almost his goal weight, I can feel his ribs, see more curvature in his waist and see him move with more vigor and agility in the field.

Well, I am coming down in weight. Exercising with Mom at least one hour every morning, best that we can in Wisconsin winter snow and ice. Plan to work up to six miles a day of leash walking once our roads stay snow and ice free. Bean girl and her Mom are my role model  Love, Rocky
