Casey is 8 months old and weighs 51 lbs.  Her mother and father are both 70 pounds.  Does anyone have an idea of how to tell how big they will get?  We were hoping she is just about done growing, might fill out a little bit, that it.  I can't imagine her gaining another 20lbs. by the time she is full grown.

By her age I would guess she is probably done with growing height wise.  She will however fill out and put on some muscle.  How tall is she in her withers?  My largest female is 25 inches in the withers and weighs 57 pounds.  She does not have an ounce of fat. She has also been spayed.  My middle female is 23 inches and 51 pounds and again not an ounce of fat.  She is still intact.

Withers... I am assuming that the withers is the front shoulder blades?? Well, to the base of her neck/back she is about 23-1/2"

My guess is she will end up 70lbs just like mom and dad.

My GSP is 10 months old and though his bone structure seems to be done stretching out he is gaining mass; i suspect both muscle and bone.  The last month alone (9-10 months) he has started to show massive growth in his hind quarters.

From any of the dogs i have been around of this size after a good year to 14 months its safe to say most growing has been accomplished.

Leena is 4 months and maybe 30lbs? Her mom was on the larger size for a Brittany female, maybe 40lbs and her dad was on the smaller size for a GSP male maybe 40lbs and 24in.

Leena is getting soo gangly though its funny.

Terra is 23" and 50 lbs. Hudson is 25" and 75lbs. The puppies at 8 months now are a mix of both parents. My little girl, Rayne is about 22" and 45 lbs. Her sister, Bella is 24 1/2" and 60 lbs. Guess we'll have to wait and see how they all trun out.

Isn't 70 lbs for a GSP female about 10 lbs above max weight per standard? Just wondering.

Tessa is 8 months, about 44 lbs (only added 4 lbs in two months). Was estimated to top out at 55-60 lbs but I doubt it. Maybe 50 or so, is my guess.

I hope Casey doesn't grow to be 70 lbs. Her mom was big and hyper, we never got to see her dad.
As far as 14 months till they are done growing. I heard somewhere that GSP's are full grown at 9 months. Something having to do with their growth plate. Anyone wanna chime in shed some light??

Depending on the dogs the growth plates close somewhere between 1 and 2 years old.  My shorthairs have all been done growing by about 8 months as far as height.  They did not finish filling out and getting all there muscle until about 2 YO.  The standard for size in GSPs per the standard is:

Dog 23 - 25 inches at the withers and 55 to 70 pounds.

Bitches 21 - 23 inches at the withers and 45 to 60 pounds.

The standard allows for 1 inch above or below, but anything more than that is supposed to be severely penalized.

Here is a link to the standard if anyone is interested:

Plan on having a seventy pound dog.  Typically what I've seen is that with females they have about 90% of their height/length by 12-14 months of age.  They will then begin to fill out and will hit their full growth and "natural weight" at about 24 months.

With Males I see it taking about six more months.

If you spay her, she will grow taller and longer than what is normal because the secondary sex hormones also regulate long bone growth.

Usually the males are going to be very close to their fathers size, and the females very close to that of the mother.  This is not a hard and fast rule but it is a good guideline.

Juneau's 5.5 months and about 35 pounds.  she is a fine-boned thing so I had thought she would top out on the light end of the typical range, but she has put on about 12 pounds in the last 1.5 months which has been an unbelievable growth rate!  If she keeps up for even another month or so at this rate, she will certainly not be undersized - I'd guess maybe 50+ pounds.  Her face is definitely maturing from that puppy look of just a few weeks ago.

Well, Tessa is 22" at the withers, 44 lbs. Again, very much the same as Rayne...those two :)

Teesa,

I'm going to confirm Rayne's weight at the vet later this week. Can't believe how much bigger her sister is though.... Tessa and Rayne have been pretty much the same size every time the topic comes up.

OK so looking at all of these figures it appears that Juno is a bit of a giant. He is three years old, 25 inches at the shoulder and at the vet in January he was 83 lbs. He's not fat at all, he does have some good muscle on him and I'm going to say bigger boned. He was the largest puppy in his litter. But we have cut back on his food a bit, especially for the winter as we don't want him to get any bigger than that. I would love to have him stand side to side to one of those smaller girls.

Oh well, I guess Casey is destined to be outside of the "breed standard". Even though she might not have "Barbi girl" measurements and isn't destined to be a runway model, we still love her.

Have you read the thread about Marie's Rocky?

And his diet?

So I had my gang into the vet today for their rattlesnake boosters and had the vet weigh them.

Belle (5.5 YO female), 25 in at the withers weighs 55 lbs

Halo (4 YO female) 23 in at the withers weighs 51 lbs

Ringo (9 MO male) 25 in at the withers weighs 57 lbs

I am very happy with Belle and Halo's weights as they look good and have great energy.  I can see the last 2 ribs as well.

Ringo I was working to slim down a little as he had gained a littel more than I liked when I switched his food. At 57 lbs he is now looking really good.  I can also now see his last two ribs.  He has more than enough energy and was running in the Hunt Tests all weekend long without stopping or showing any fatigue.

I like them to go into a Texas summer a little on the light side as they seem to handle the heat allot better that way.

Juno,
It is my guesstimate that he needs to loose 10-12lbs.
Shorthairs are supposed to look skinny,it's considered well built to be on the thin side.

Haiko is 26" and 70lbs
Bregon 25" and 75lbs He has always been a porker. Been working on it. He loves to eat and if I cut back his belly rumbles. The goal is to get him down to
65lb, and I think he may grow a little taller as well. Can't wait for warmer weather and swimming!
