Wish me luck. It's time for that rare occasion that is bath time. Usually a towel down if wet, or a brush down once mud has dried enough will suffice. But - it's Crufts this week and both are a little more fragrant than I'd like (I suspect fox poo) so it's time to cover the bathroom in towels and brave a couple of damp GSPs. This happens like once a year (is that bad?) |

I only shampoo the hounds down once a year unless they get into something really nasty. It's actually part of my spring cleaning. I will rinse the dogs off through the summer and occasionally in the winter otherwise, but I really hate getting the dogs soaked in cold weather. |

This is how I bathe Rocky if he rolls in a dead sticky after I put the hose away for winter. Fill the bath tube half full of luke warm water. On hand have water pitcher, 2 towels , shampoo and high value doggy treat. ei low fat chicken Call GSP into bathroom close door. Guide GSP into tub with high value doggy treat in front of nose. Once in tub rinse GSP with water pitcher, shampoo Followed by rinse. Dry off with towel once out of tub. Give much praise and time for indoor zoomy zoomy tennis ball if weather is losey outside. Works for us every time. Rocky loves his baths as tail is straight out during his bath and I do give him lots of massage when rubbing in the shampoo. |

This is going to sound horrible, but... Dulcie is getting on with her spring trenching as of the last couple days, complete with a lot of grit in her mouth, lips, and all over her feet. How do I get rid of it? Just close the dog in the utility room for a half hour. She'll clean herself up to some degree, but with these hard coats dirt literally just falls off once it's dry. Although you don't want to know what my utility room looks like this time of year. *sigh* It's aggravating, but I've long since learned to give up until things dry up outside. This darn pale blue living room carpet has GOT to go one of these year though. > |

Caryl -- don't know that there is any harm in bathing, as long as you use an appropriate shampoo. LFB -- in the two years we have had Bo, we have never bathed him -- he just never seems to need it. Plus, we don't do therapy or show him, which would necessitate cleaning. It's funny, even when he has stepped in mud on our hikes through the woods, by the time we get home, the dirt has dried and fallen off. |

Is there any harm in bathing?? I know about dry skin, but is there any other reason? Just curious. (I am asking this as a serious question - not to pick on anyone.)
Not to worry, there is nothing wrong with bathing, as long as you use a coat conditioner so the skin doesn't become to dry.
I could never get away with not bathing as Ruby rolls in every dead animal she finds, YUK !!!!

I have to laugh at this thread! Last weekend I had my car in the shop and had to work all weekend long so I decided to take Wachter to the "doggy spa" (aka kennel) so he wouldnt be cooped up the whole time. WELL when I sent his instructions I warned them to NEVER use the "B" words around him... 1 being "bye bye" and the other being "bath" otherwise the person who uttered those words would become road kill for a racing GSP..... WELL they didn't believe me and the assistant (in front of Wachter) stated that she was going in to give someone a bath, and promptly was leveled while Wachter raced her to the bathing area. In order to get him OUT of the bath tub so they could start their grooming for the day they HAD to get him wet.. and even then he had to "inspect" the tub between each dog's grooming session! Needless to say, when I got Wachter back on Saturday evening.. I had a VERY clean dog!! Carrie |

My wife is obsessive about the baths. Casey gets a bath twice a month because my wife cannot stand the smell of dog. I don't mind too much, I just brush her allot and try to keep the dandruff under control. Personally, I enjoy the after bath maniac run throughout the house. Usually lasts about 10 minutes and efficiently re-locates all of the area rugs in the house. I refer to it as Hitler's revenge.(her being German) Payback for the un-needed bath. |

It was a remarkably painless experience! I think they're both shocked into submission once in the tub. Unfortunately someone (not me!) didn't close the bedroom door and a very wet Holly launched herself on my bed. I won't bathe them less than a week before a show to give the natural oils a chance to shine through again. They smell of 'Aloe Vera and Cucumber' (sensitive skin shampoo) now. Yummy - but not very 'gundog'! They have to be the easiest dogs to prepare for showing - quick brush down and buff up with chamois leather and done. Oh - and a tail trim on the end! They do get utterly filthy but we keep them locked in the kitchen until mud dries and falls off or towelled down straight away. Holly decided that she would walk parallel to the walkies path IN a drainage ditch yesterday so a bath was good timing. Off for professional nail trimming and pad trimming tomorrow pre-Crufts pampering. I couldn't be doing with a high maintenance (in terms of grooming) dog. |

Carrie - very funny story about Wachter! Is he like that at home when someone takes a *ath? (no b's with Wachter). With both of my GSP's I've only given them baths when they really need it, maybe once or twice a year. The rest of the time a wet towel works wonders in getting rid of the mud and debris from a run in the park! |

Dogs in our house get bathed on a regular basis... you always have to have a clean dog to do therapy. Wachter watches the ladies getting groomed and associates it with 1. pb&c 2. full body massage with and without the towel 4. undivided attention of not just 1 but THREE human family members. and 3. get to go bye bye to play with the kiddos (he doesnt get to do nursing homes) One of the earliest pictures we have of Wachter is him standing in the Bathtub looking out expectantly... I had just gotten in an argument with the kids about the fact they HAD to take a bath. Carrie |
