Yesterday during a afternoon walk my 5 month old GSP threw up a large amount of yukky white stuff. It covered the ground larger than a grown man's hand and fingers. It was bright white with a little tiny redish maroon in one small area. It had the consistancy of placenta. I could not pick it up or seperate it with a leaf or small stick, so I put a poop glove on to look at it.  It was very viscos. It felt like a membrane. Felt like the thickest snot I ever saw. When I tried to look at it it felt heavy and thick. When I lifted it it did not seperate very easily, it would retain a little see through area between what was lifted and what was on the ground.

He had nothing to eat before the walk except for a few tiny pieces of white corn chips off the floor. And that was about a 1/2 hour before the walk. His closest meal had been that mornings breakfast.

I was worried about bloat, but he had not recently eatten and he was fine afterward. He seemed normal and had dinner and breakfast since. Any Ideas?

Dogs throw up periodically. It's amazing what they can ingest in a split second without you seeing it. If it disagrees, it usually comes back up.

With bloat, if the dog is able to throw up or belch, it's not a a complete torsion, and not an emergency yet would warrant close observation (walking the dog slowly on a leash is supposed to help). If the dog is restless, panting, trying to vomit or belch without success, it's off to the nearest vet immediately. I was always worried about not being able to tell bloat from a lesser evil but everyone that has been through it told me, that if it is bloat, you will know it.

So my guess would be it's just something he ate and got rid of. Would keep a close eye on him and the poop for a while, and because he is a puppy, would take him to the vet if it happens again, just as a precaution (because even a not so serious condition can become serious fast for a puppy).

Also, when my pups throw up, I like to withhold all food for 24 hours, then start them back up with a canned food from the vet (easy digest) or some rice and cottage cheese before going back to the kibble.

Checked google and lots of the egg white looking throw up stuff mentioned, no real answers. Closest I came to an answer was alot of dogs seem to swallow their saliva/spit/chin foam and it collects in the stomach and is thrown back up when it gets too full.
I know my Weimer gets chin foam during a walk and i have to de-foam him with my shirt before he meets friends or he will slime them.
Rocky (GSP) does not get chin foam. Maybe it's collecting in the stomach? Not real scientific I know, just throwing that out there.

also happens when they drink too much water too fast. If it happens only once, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Especially if his temperature is normal.

Ewwww!

Osiris ate a turd the other day. A TURD! And I don't know where he got it.

He game in from outside and ran up to me, and I said "Eww... your breath smells like poop!" And a few minutes later, he yawned, and I saw some of it stuck in his back teeth!!  We had to brush it out - it was NASTY! And the worst part about it was that it smelled like a human turd. Who the heck shat in our yard????? LOL

And why do dogs eat poop??????

"Shat" ... is that a word? LOL! Too funny. Tessa only likes to step in it with her webbed feet, but after your description I'd rather have it on her feet than her teeth.

Why do they eat poop? I've noticed just recently that Murphy has taken to eating his own or our other dog, Thor's, poops in the yard. I can't quite understand it. He gets plenty of kibble to eat and training treats. So gross!

Where did the turd come from??? I imagine from the vicinity of some sort of sphincter .

Sorry, my inner smartass asserts itself now and then.

Seriously, it's called coprophagia and is pretty common. Here's one link, you can find lots if you look.

Navilla,
Many years ago my lab and I went to visit Grammy. while we were there Dakota decided to visit the cat litter box without me knowing it. I found out about it on the way home when he decided to vomit it onto the back seat. UUUUGGGGGHHHHH! I am a nurse and my mouth still waters at the thought of that smell. I had to pull over before I joined him.

DesertRose I love your response....

OH MAN!!!!, You guys are crazy !!! All this talk about crap, poop, snot, vomit, turds, & sphincters, YUK !!!! I love the word, "SHAT"!!! If that's not a word, it should be !!!
My Sadie only eats poop if it's frozen, We call them, "Poop-sicles" There's nothing more disgusting than getting a Poop-sicle kiss . Flygirl, I to am a nurse, and all I can think of is Infection control !!
I think the worst smell is anal glands. That smell is sooo foul !! When I was a dog groomer, I was expressing this dogs anal glands, and I accidentally got hit in the face with it, THAT'S GROSS !!!!!! I get quizzy just thinking about it.

Poop-sicles....LOL.

I agree on the anal glands...gag! Another good one is stomach juices - concentrated. My late bulldog once swallowed a football and had it cut out, I asked them to save it, they did and put it in a ziplock bag. I don't know what possessed me to open that one day...gasp! And it had only been in the stomach for 4 hours. Intense!

Ringo likes to go for tootsie rolls from the cat litter box.  I block the door to the room, but sometimes I forget.  All of my dogs like deer pellets.  Thank goodness those don't smeel and are mostly grain and grass.

Thanks for the insight about poopoo eating! I know it's a dog thing but it's so nasty!

Horse poop is the delicacy of choice here. The dogs look at the horses as though they were giant Pez dispensers. UCK.

Desertrose, yes, My girls love horsey turds too, but if they have the choice it's hands down Cat poop. Our neighbors cats come over and poop under our bike trailer, and when my dogs get the chance they can be found under the trailer gulping down the poops before I can get to them, It's DISGUSTING !!!!

Did some more searching and found that besides saliva build up, rawhides contribute also.

The meal of choice here is having a drink from the brown pool of 'water' on a cow poo then grabbing a mouthful as a snack. Usually followed by an attempt at kisses. Saying that, sheep pellets proved a tasty snack this afternoon. Foul beasts.

I ran Ringo for the first time today in a Junior Hunt test and I saw he snagging a few horse turds without ever missing a step or slowing down.  I guess when you are hungry and hunting you just go for it.
