Yeah!
I just started jogging home and called him. He followed me, until we met up with a neighbor dog. When he stopped to sniff the other dog, I slipped his collar back on.
I'm just not used to these pointy-head dogs. LOL It's a little tougher to pull the collar over the head of a boxer!
Just an update: still working on things.
The sit/stay about turn Bev suggested has proven difficult to implement most of the time due to pedestrian and road traffic so I need to coordinate things better. Ran into a few friends and enlisted their help but it seems they didn't have that much patience.
OB classes were cancelled but we were allowed to practice with another class which I took advantage of, sit-stays were excellent, we are making progress, it's just, no one can touch her...it's like holding down a bucking horse.
To illustrate my plight, here is a photo from January, I hope Caroline doesn't mind. Dogs from left to right: Tessa, Tink, Porter. All pups are about the same age - 6 months.
Well, Porter and Tink get the last laugh - they are showing unlike Tessa who is really shooting herself in the foot with her shenanigans. But: breakthrough today. My newest approach is every day I make her sit in front of the entrance to UGA's sports center, lots of students coming and going, a constant stream really. I put Tessa in a sit-stay and make her hold it despite any attention she receives. I don't let anybody pet her yet. We had a pretty busy day today so she was certainly somewhat discharged but downtown, for the first time she remained seated when somebody greeted her. No corrections needed, and she wasn't even wearing the pinch! Three paws on the ground:
wow, do i feel a little better re: the same struggle with my Lola who is now 8 months old too....we just keep plugging away at getting a calm sit when folks approach....
it is the HARDEST thing to get people to NOT pet her unless she is calm.....
at beginner obedience, that was the 'final exam' .... i was sweating 'passing'...luckily i had brought a McD's cheeseburger crumbled up as a training treat---and that was way more important than anyone coming up ...... so at least i KNOW it can be done
i wonder how many burgers i'd need to get through a conformation class at a match, with no jumping on the judge ...
