Well we have had Wyatt for about 3 weeks now.  I'm not really concearned but curious.  He is 3mo old, it has just warmed up to where we can be outside for 15min or longer.  So to get him some exercise I take him for walks in the woods.  Snows about a foot deep but has a hard crust he stays on top of.  My question is he does not seem to be very independent or adventerous.  He is usually following or trailing behind.  If I keep walking him like that will he develop the habit of trailing instead of hunting in front?  What do you folks do with your dog when walking in the woods?  Right now I figure it is just for getting him out of the house and introduction to the woods in general?

He should get more outgoing. I usually take my pup out with one of my older ones a few times. After that he should start getting more curious. He is still very young.

My Leena who is also 3mo is just starting to get a little more outgoing. My Lab usually shows her the ropes in the woods. I've also had my pup for 3 weeks.

Its good that the puppy has bonded to you. VERY good. As they age they will become more independant. If i recall my GSP pup stayed pretty darn close at 12 weeks also. At 5 months old he would hunt with me but in real deep weeds he would trail behind me to let me make a path. When your dog roams, don't call it back to you too often. You want the dog to have to check in and keep tabs on you. Otherwise the dog may develope a habit of relying on you to keep him in eye or ear range.

I would continue to take the puppy out as much as you can, but find some terrain that will not mess with his confidence. Find some less deep snow or open parking areas in the evening or something to play with him.

For peace of mind, i was concerned my GSP may be a real close working book licker dog also. But by the time he hit 7 months he was ranging out 40 yards, now at 9 months he goes a good 100 yards, though he always checks in and looks back to make sure he knows my location.
