the short list....

passport

tissues

toilet paper and empty cardboard rolls

dryer sheets

books

envelopes

photos

cardboard boxes

This is a recent development (past 4 months maybe) for both dogs to want to find and destroy anything that can be shredded and chewed.  They aren't puppies who are chewing and teething, they seem to find anything paper and shred it all over the house.  Its a combination of doing it while all the humans are gone and while sitting in the middle of the family room with me like its a-ok.  They have plenty of stuffed toys and wubbas to play with, they get food and treats daily.

What has gotten into my dogs!!!!??!?!!???

I think they go through phases.  I know mine show more destructive energy when it is cold and rainy outside and they can't go out and play.  Count yourself lucky that it is only paper things.  During the last bad weather stint Ringo destroyed a brand new throw pillow (he has never bothered the throw pillows in the house, but liked the new one I just got), a leather foot stool in my media room (hopefully it can be repaired and it wasn't the chair itself), a new throw blanket (he has his own blanket that has no holes in it, but I have a hole in my new throw), and the edge of a quilt that I have over the sofa so the dogs don't get dirt and hair on the sofa. In the last week or so though he has been fine.

My girls outgrew this on again off again behaviour when they hit about 2 years.  So, with Ringo I only have 17 months to go.

Benelli loves to shred.  She can have the toilet paper roll of and shredded within a minute.

I sent my daughters iPod back and was waiting for a replacement to be sent.  They emailed me with delivery confirmation saying it was at my house.  I called home (I was working a 24hr shift) and asked the hubby if they delivered the iPod.  He told me he was in the basement part of the day but no they hadn't delivered it.  So, I call the next day when I get home and left a message.  No return call.  I call the next day and get a return call saying that it was delivered and I asked if they needed a signature and he told me no that Fed Ex has a signature on file for us so they just drop the stuff off.  Sometimes if the garage door is open they will leave things in the garage (went on the scavenger hunt in the garage to see if I could find a box without success)  He went on to explain that the box is small and he would call Fed Ex and see where they delivered it.  Ok call me back.  After I hung up I got to thinking... small box left on the front porch.... Benelli outside....where was I going to find the shredded box.  Well it had snowed about 3 inches since the alleged delivery date.  As I was driving up the driveway I see shredded box beside the garage.  I found the iPod under the snow shredded box scattered around.  We thawed out the iPod and it works great!  Luckily it was in the hard plastic box that they come in and she had not chewed that.

My husband was paid in cash for work he had done and left it on the counter nest to his wallet along with a deposit slip.  I found the deposit just out side of the dog door, then the one 100 dollar bill then another and then shredded pieces of the other two.  Luckily I found enough of them so that the bank would replace it.

You mean like this?

I have read somewhere that for bird dogs, the appeal is in the light weight of tissue or paper products, mimicking the light weight of a bird, bird wings, feathers. Not sure if that is so, as dogs of ALL breeds tend to shred toilet paper, but owning a bird dog,  I like the theory

Mine will pull tissues out of the box one at a time and shred them. Other than his toys and dog beds (tears the zipper out of them) the battery has been the only really bad thing he has chewed on.

My JuneBug as a juvenile delinquent used to sneak outside with a box of tissues, pull them out one at a time and EAT them. Yuck. At least she outgrew that...

Just want to ask about electronic equipment being delivered to houses during winter cold weather. I am have a DVD VHS machine delivered to my house on FEB 2nd by UPS. I have alerted my neighbors, husband to look out for the UPS truck so package can be picked up immediately if possible and brought in a warm house. Fly girl, does an Ipod fall in the same category to be ruin by cold weather?? Sounds like it was packed well and good news, not chewed by Benille. Sounds like Benille loves to open packages too.

Marie,
It was buried in the snow from Wednesday until Friday afternoon and after allowing it to come to room temperature it works fine :) As for the packages, as long as it is cardboard she will rip it to shreds. You saw on a previous thread what she did to the pom pom.

Mine love tissues too. Hunter's favorite thing is dryer sheets. He'll grab a used one in his mouth and take it into the living room. Then he drops it and rolls on it. Makes him smell great!! Too bad it's not the only thing he rolls in. Usually bear dung or worse!

She is probably doing it because it is fun for her.  Getting her to stop...Good Luck!!  You might try removing the paper or blocking her out so she can't get it for a while.  Sometimes when I do that they forget and don't go back, but that is a long shot.

Mydogiscrazy, your dog is shredding and my dog shred cause they are GSPs who are high energy and bore easilyGSPs when not seen and you hear noises are GETTING INTO TROUBLEWinter is a tough time for all of northern GSP owners as cold, snowy,  icey sub zero weather. It is tough. Spring will be welcomed and come in a few months. For some of us we have not seen a blad of grass since middle of November. Believe me , I will be soooo appreciative to walk around a snowless block with Rocky on lease at 40 degrees Rocky will be 100 times exercised running freely in open fields this Spring which he is not getting now!!

Rather paper products than my MOST expensive pair of shoes. Never leave a year old puppy (and she still is very much a puppy) unsupervised in your bedroom after thinking 'Hmm - those two are quiet up there'.

I think, eventually, they will stop shredding inappropriate things. I hope. All my dogs eventually outgrew it. Until they do, I try to make sure not to give them access to paper products or things they show a preference to (for Tessa it's toilet paper and my socks, worn or freshly laundered, don't matter, she tries to get to them all the time). That involves putting things up and away, closing doors, supervising the dog, correcting/redirecting the dog, etc.

lacey is almost three and sophie is nine. i dont think this is something youth related they will outgrow. but i did get them bully sticks today that kept them chewing for a long time, so maybe that got the habit out of their system for a while (today).
