Well, Ranger sure isn't.  We got this Calico cat this summer and she absolutely loves him.  She will rub her face on Ranger's face and lies on her back inviting him to adore her.  As you can see, Ranger tolerates this quite well.  He sometimes growls as he lies there but has not shown a bit of aggressiveness toward this little brazen one.  It takes a lot of effort for him to finally get up and walk away from her if he's had enough.

Just thought I'd share a fun photo I bet many of you would never see with your GSPs!

My gang has two cats, Dodger and Oliver.  Oliver was here first and has helped raise all my GSPs.  Dodger came shortly after Halo and is not as good with the dogs.  He never has learned to play with them.  Oliver plays chase with the dogs and will sleep with them.  That said, strange cats are a different matter.

My older dog now will tolerate cats in his vicinity but I would not trust him not to pounce at an opertune time. The puppy, no way.
I think he dreams of cats.

I think it all depends on whether they've grown up with them or not. Our 1st lived with a house cat, but once he came to the farm he found out that these cats where used to "playing tag" with dogs....what the hey he couldn't very well not do a dog's job could he? Number 2 killed cats...mmmm say no more there. Remington would never hurt them and will sometimes "play" with them and sometimes just ignore them. When he was a puppy he would try to get them to chase him...but they didn't catch on :D

Bo isn't cat sharp. We have two cats, and he is alternately confused and amused by the cats. Since they were here first I think he gets that they are not toys. He loves to give them a good chase now and again, or have a good staring contest but that is about it.

Now here's an interesting thing ... we have had a baby gate up keeping him from coming upstairs pretty much from the day we brought him home. Over the holidays, I said enough. I'm tired of climbing over the gate. They are all going to just have to get along. And ever since doing that I've noticed the cats are moving much closer into his sphere. I'll be interested to see if they decide to come and snuggle with him on cold days :)

We live in a gated community as well.  Benelli on one side and Cheyney the cat on the other.  Cheyney has reign of the upstairs and the front part of the house.  Benelli the Kitchen, family room and back porch/room area.  Cheyney hisses at Benelli when she gets close but if Benelli isn't looking Cheyney will get as close as she can to Benelli.  I am not concerned about Benelli getting scratched as she is front declawed (although she chases (actually climbs) squirrels up trees over 10 feet)  I am hoping that one day Cheyney will give in but so far the hissing continues.  If she only knew how much Benelli likes to play she could have a playmate!

A dog musher here in WA had a cat show up at her house and decide to stay. She had somewhere between 10 and 20 siberian huskies. The cat gained the name "Dances with Death", Dance for short, and last I heard it had somehow survived to nearly 20 years old. :)

We had ONE cat show up years ago that I think would have been like 'Dance' and handled our (very sharp!) hounds with his own version of a whip and a chair, but husband is allergic to cats and we're not keen on acquiring one. We are a cat free zone.

Mine are great with 'their' two cats, other cats found while we are hunting or feral cats that venture onto the property, not so much!

Our two GSP's grew up with 4 adult cats in our household. They quickly learned which cats they can bury their snouts in and which they can't. They get the biggest kick out of chasing the cats that give the biggest bang for the buck, that is, the ones that make noise like a tea kettle going off!

Hey Ranger,
I see you got a Wii and outdoor challenge. Have you tried it yet? Lots of fun!

I wish I could say mine are good natured with cats, but that would be a blatant lie. I used to have a neighbors cat get one the truck and scratch the hood this lasted about a month and I decided it was time for Charlie's open season. He caught it the first time I let him go. Chased him into a bush and had him by the tail. Charlie let go, the cat's tail was permanently kinked and he ceased to come in the yard. The next Charlie victim was another neighbor's cat. This cat taunted both of them and Charlie decided to open the front door(he has retractable opposable thumbs) and pin the cat against it's own front door. This happened twice and the cat was found dead in it's own front yard about 12 hours after the second incident. Charlie never touched the cat the second time, but he definitely scared him to death. So cats are a no go in our yard as are birds, geese, squirrels, chipmunks, lizards and rabbits. I have been presented all of these at one time or another by one of the two of them.

my gsp is gonzo over the cat and the cat is not so pleased with the "gonzo" mode. Cat beats him up on a regular basis.......but he comes back for more. First 10,000 points this fall and winter have been over my cat. Should be wild if we ever cross paths with a bobcat out hunting.

You got plain lucky girl! My late, great Maggie, would just kill em, no questions asked, no amount of juice thru Mr. Ecollar stopped her, she just broke their necks, spit em out, went for the next, until there were none. I sometimes miss having a cat. I always had them before GSPs.

Our neighbor has cats that run wild and drive Molly crazy. If she ever gets those cats they will be goners. I am about to start trapping the cats (we do have a leash law for cats and I am hassling the city to make them license them just like the dogs). The neighbor says to call her and she will come get her cat and I told her she could pick it up at the pound if I catch it. Hate to be mean. I used to own cats but kept them indoors. We have so many people who don't want to take proper care of their animals. Maybe the neighborhood fox will take care of the problem. I have seen it sitting in an adjacent yard watching the cats----yummy.

Michigan loves to play with the cat, sometimes I think she gets a bit too rough but Cletus is a big boy and can handle himself well. It's better than TV.

See, I figure if my cats were declawed, Bo would have learned early on not to chase them. Period. As it is, he only likes to stare them down and seems really intrigued when they hiss at him :)

hehe, generally he eats the same as the dogs but sometimes he gets seafood. The more food he gets to eat the nicer he is; we tried dieting but he got real ornery. It might also be that with Michigan he gets enough stimulation and is happier as such. I used to be his rough play pal but I have a job to go to and the scratch/bite marks didn't seem appropriate. He came declawed from the HS but he tends to try pulling you down and slicing with the hind claws. He also bites very hard and once I saw him light Michigan up with three left hooks like he was a little kitty Oscar de la Hoya.

Michigan goes and puts her snout on his head to set him off. I'm sure I'll catch them cuddling soon enough.
