Cocoa our 14 month old GSP came into the livingroom where i was laying on the floor goofing around with the other two dogs and promptly showed me how silly she looks dragging he butt across the carpet. A quick visual inspection didnt show anything out of the ordinary. Well I guess it was time to put all that video training to use. I expressed her anal glands, but it didn't go as I expected. I thought it would just oooze out, This stuff came out like the nozzel on a windex bottle. It wasn't completely clear either it had a slight tanish color to it. but it wasn't thick or too smelly. She is sensative about that area and stayed clear of me for the rest of the night. what do you think I should do now. express it again or just leave her alone. Jim

Have you checked for worms?

Leave her alone for now and check her anal glands again in a 4 weeks or so. Pups rarely like to have their behinds messed with and especially their anal glands expressed.  Since I show my dogs and judges like to go over them, I start handling them all over very early.  They do get to where they will stand quietly and let you do things to them (they even will tolerate expressing anal glands).  What you described when you expressed your girl sounds very normal.  My guess is she will quit scooting.  However, it never hurts to also have her checked for worms as was said in the other post.

The first time you express anal glands in a pup is always the hardest.  You are learning and the pup has no idea what is going on.  She will get more used to it, but it may take a while. Also, give her a treat when you are done as a reward.

sometimes even after expressing there is still the issue of the itch remaining. You may want to rinse the dog's behind in warm water for the next few days to help reduce any swelling or irritation that may have already developed.

If you do this enough the dog will stand for it.. ESPECIALLY if you give the special treat afterwards

Not sure where you live but one of our friends' GSPs does this when the little bugs are about (since they seem to go after her butt, poor thing). You may also want to check to make sure there aren't any bug bites in the area...
