When you think about it, we can train our GSPs into anything and anyway we want them to be Think of your GSP day one at your house how he was then and what he is now. With training and consistency dogs can be trained to all they can be!!! Just like in the Army
Rocky day one at my house, Chased cars, afraid to walk on leash past a big truck or giant machinery. would turn around and growl if I touched his backend trying to guide in in a certain direction. On the hunting field Rocky was afraid to pick up a live bird.
Today Rocky doesnot chase cars, He burns his excess energy chasing and retrieving tennis balls!!
On walks he does not fear large trucks and can walk by them calmly!!
Touch exercises under my trainers guidance got Rocky used to me touching him in guidance without growling.
So in the end I was able to change alot of Rocky. In fact a person who saw Rocky the first day we adopted him, seeing him 6 months latter thought he was a different dog Could not believe Rocky was the same dog.
So with your plan Beth, I feel Moose can be changed to what you want him to be too |

Dear Beth I totally understand where you are coming from. My family has always been staunchly pro animal and pro dog. My father in particular aught us to be respectful of all animals (even the tiniest insect) and to try to hapily co -exist. I am not a GSP expert but we have had packs of dogs all our lives. At one stage we had a very strong male golden retriever, a female lab, an italian pointer (female) and a male schnauzer. Plus about 5 cats, all living in harmony in the countryside. At some stage my dog Teddie, the male retriever would get aggressive though never with us. On occasions we had other male dogs visit - we lived on a big piece of land in the countryside quite isolated and our animals roamed free. But what I wanted to say is that I am not judging you, you know your dog and your wee boy. It sounds like Moose is feeling crowded out, ie before he held some position in the hierarchy that he now feels has been taken from him. I am not a behavirourist nor antying similar but is there any way he can retain that position? I am not sure that you can really train that out of a dog...but in all cases..if the worst comes to the worst...remember that a lot of people have adopted other poeple's dogs, me for one, and we have built tremendous relationhips with our pooches. If you met Max you would see what a strong bond he has with us after 15 months with us and 3 years with someone else. So dogs and humans adapt. I am sure there is a good solution waiting for you. As a pet lover I understand what you are going through and what your concerns are (abandoning your little boy) and that sometimes you have to do everything you can before you give up. I know you need to do that. I would encourage you though when you get to the stage where you know either way, to follow that instinct and do what it tells you. If it says go back to your friend, listen to that instinct. Your beautiful Moose will be happy with someone else as well. Trust me. And good luck to you. By the way - thank God there are people like you that put so much thought and agony into giving up their pooches! Claudia |

By the way - thank God there are people like you that put so much thought and agony into giving up their pooches! Ditto -- we have friends who have two beautiful pointer girls that were given up because they were either too much work or had outlived their usefulness as hunters. When we adopt our dogs it really is a life decision and I commend you on doing everything you can to make this work. I'm sure you would never put Jayden at risk unnecessarily. I agree with Francine that some dogs just can't be fixed (despite the "Dog Whisperer"), but I can understand that you want to know that you gave it your very best effort and didn't just bail when the going got tough. If in the end you do have him adopted by your friend, at least you will know he is in a warm, safe place and that you gave it your best shot. Good luck! |

Many of you will probably sigh and roll your eyes but we made our final decision. Moose is staying with our friend for good. Unless for some reason that person has problems in the future then he will come back to us. Over several phone conversations with our friend it became very apparent that Moose is having a blast and LOVING life there. So we decided to lay everything to rest and let him stay. It feels very good to have that decision made once and for all. A load has been lifted! Thank you all for your kind words, advice and encouragment! |

Beth it would have been really hard for you to come to this point. But well done on making a decision that will work out for all of you, I am sure I am sending Moose blessings right now. Who knows he might be back with you in the future when your son is a bit older! Claudia |

Your friend has lifted a hugh weight off of you. Friends like this don't happen along every day. I am glad it worked out this way. You do not have to worry when you run to the bathroom, answer the phone or any other little thing that would take you away for just a moment. And you don't have to loose sleep over your decision. You really struggled with this and this says a lot about your character. You are a strong person. Not like me who is going to shoot my puppy for messing with my jacket right now.LOL. Francine |

Beth, I just got caught up on Moose today during lunch at work and my eyes are tearing up for your loss. In many respects you've had to make a decision similar to the one we're often forced to make when it's time to say goodbye to one of our old furkids at the end of their life. It's never, ever easy to let them go and we agonize over the decision. But in the end it's often a quality of life issue, both theirs and ours, that's the deciding factor. I'm sure your heart is breaking and you will continue to hurt for some time - that's because you love Moose so much. But you have the support of everyone here - I dare anyone to roll their eyes over such a tough decision. Hang in there, stay strong, and take comfort in knowing Moose is happy and Jayden is safe. Thanks Larry! That was very nice of you! I do miss him but get almost daily updates. And so far no more calls that he has run away! I know he is happy as I can see it in the few pictures he has sent to me. Thanks again for all your support everyone! |
