I see from your posts that you lost Spot this summer and I think you added Torin in the past year. Do you think the change in the pack dynamics had something to do with the agression. He probably regarded Jayden as part of the pack too. That said you just can't take a chance when a child is involved.

To be honest he has been growly toward Jayden since he came home from Guatemala. It has just gotten progressivly worse.

Him being growly toward Rajah and going after him may have something to do with the pack dinamic changing this year but once again if it were just the dogs we would work through it but it isn't.

Oh and yeah we can go visit and hunt with him but can't for a while.

Moose went through some MAJOR seperation anxiety the first 3 days and there is no way I will put him or our friend through that again by visiting too soon!

Plus I don't know if right now I could walk away from him and leave him there if we went to visit. I know I am just going through a grieving process just like if he had passed away. Life just brings some very hard decisions and circumstances sometimes!

Beth,

As hard as it is, you're doing the right thing for all concerned. You would never forgive yourself if soemthing happened to your son because you kept Moose. He sounds like he's happy in his new home. Hang in there!

Beth, I totally agree with you to not visit Moose for now. I really don't know how good it is going to be on you to visit him at all? Since you are friends with the person, you will most likely be seeing Moose again. My question is, "How good is it for the dog and the past owner of the dog to see each other again?" How should the past owner prepare themselves if their past dog doesn't react to them as he did in the past? Do Rescue people llike Lisa, recommend the past owner to see a dog again after giving it away? Does Lisa's foster families ever go visit their ex foster dog once in their new forever home?
My guess, it is not a good idea, just a hunch.

I don't have any expectation of what Moose will do when he sees us again. I hope he comes up to us and says hi but then turns to our friend as his new owner.

There is no avoiding see him in the future. Our friend is one that we see 1-2 times a month in the summer for dock jumping. So it would be almost impossible not to see Moose. I think in the long run once he has really settled in at our friends it will be ok.

We have fostered many dogs and have visted them all after being in their new homes a few months with no issues.

Moose and I just had a VERY strong bond and that is what makes it very difficult. But I know I can lean on you all to help me through it and encourage my and my family that we are making the right decision. I also know that if things for some reason don't work in his new home he will never land in a shelter as I will have him come back to us at that point and we will re-look at things and make further decisions. No bouncing from home to home for him!

Beth, my heart goes out to you. My family had dogs when I was growing up, but they were just "around" and nothing special. It wasn't until I got a dog as an adult 17 years ago that I found out just how strong the human/canine bond can be. For all the emotion and heartache that you are feeling right now, just know that you are doing the right thing, both for your son and Moose. We on the forum can't be there physically to lend you a shoulder to cry on, but hopefully you know that you're among friends here and can lean on us for as much support as you need. It's OK to cry and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Just wonderful Beth, you are a strong person with good experience with personal family dogs along with rescue dogs. Hats off to you!!! Especially good you have the experience visiting rescue foster dogs few months after you placed them to see how they are adjusting. Dogs do live in the moment and attach greatly to the person who is givng them food , shelter and water.

I guess I can look at it this way. Yesterday and any time our sons come home to visit, Rocky turns circles and is always happy to see them. A few months can go by, they come home and Rocky knows who they are and is ALWAYS a happy GSP to see them no matter what. I truely feel Moose will be turning circles in a few months when you come over to visit him. Best wishes!!!
I sincerely did not know if it was good or bad to visit a dog you fostered after being placed in a forever home. Sounds like it is OK!!!

Just to give you all an update. The weekend was great. moose was having a blast at his new home. Then today hit!

Somehow he and one of the other dogs got out of the fenced yard that has HOT WIRE at the top. The other dog was willing to go to the nice stanger who wanted to help but NOT MOOSE!

He has been missing since noon and it is now 8 pm. Tlak about more heart break! I drove the almost 2 hours out there to go look for him to no avail!

Found many tracks (he was having fun hunting that is for sure.... for a while at least). But no sitings. The last sighting someone had was at 4:30 pm. Nothing since!

Please keep us all in your prayers. Being the "mom" that I am I blame myself for not going to get him last Friday like I originaly planned. I say if I had this wouldn't have happened! And the weather is just crappy here too!

Cold,sleeting,and more cold!

He does have his collar on with a name plate attatched to it and is Micro-chipped. But doesn't like strangers so am afraid this is going to be a very hard "capture". UGH!

Oh no, please keep us posted. That's just awful. Makes you sick to your stomach to know they are out there alone...

That's awful...my worst nightmare. Not knowing where my dog is. I really hope he turns up.

I think Seven was on Letterman. So no it wasn't Moose.

Thanks for your thoughts guys! MOOSE MADE IT BACK! I just got the call and our friend had made on last loop around the 3 mile block and then was getting ready to settle down for the night when Moose popped his head in the window! What a relief. Now tears of joy are running down my cheeks!

OH !!! What a nightmare I know what a heartache worry that is  first hand  with our first GSP, Poge.   He ran off out our front door and was missing for a day and a half. Poge came back with cuts on him and looked tired and worn. Turned out, it was over  a female in heat After we had enough sense to get him neutered, he never ran off again.   Glad Moose made it back and is safe and sound Good news too he returned to his new home , shows he has adjusted

I am not totaly convinced he is adjusted! He has NEVER ran off since we have had him. If he did get out of our fence he NEVER left the yard. To me it shows me he hasn't adjusted! Wich makes me feel even worse that he is not with us.

I was watching the show "Its me or the Dog"-love that show! And there was a dog MUCH worse than Moose on there. I liked what they did on there and it WORKED! Pretty much in 2 weeks of hard consistant work the dog was fine with everyone who lived in the house. It makes me want to see if I can get Moose to overcome his issues with Jayden. It is just a fine line to walk!
