I have also had good luck with Old Navy coats, which are more like vests that snap underneath. I don't like the horse blanket kind because they don't keep the tummy covered, so I spend 30 minutes after getting home trying to clean the muck off the stomach. Otherwise someone will clean himself on my carpet and couch. (Here in Chicago the nice white snow is gone in minutes, leaving only dirty, muddy wet crud to be kicked up on the tummy)

Also a website called Sierra Trading Post sometimes has close outs on dog stuff. I got a great fleece coat that covered the tummy perfectly. But since it is close out, it is hit or miss.

Rocky last year in his neoprene jacket from Cabelas, ran around $30 and uses this for winter pheasant hunts

A hand me down from our Chese Lab that we had to down size for Rocky. My husband doesnot like this jacket on Rocky. Thinks it is kind of girl jacket since our female Snickers wore it. Paid around $29 from one of my pet catalogs

LOL....

Dulcie gets all happy when I get her jacket out, then prances like she's a fashion runway princess with it on. Her Barbie-'tude has provided years of entertainment. :)

We got this one:

Pretty easy to put on, and pretty cute on the dog. Has a "sporty" look.

I really like that Ruff Wear one and they even come in the same colors as Daniel & Layla's blue & red GSP leashes. Poor Layla still hasn't quite adjusted to the cold, but she is so skinny there isn't any natural insulation on her body.

thanks,

Michigan likes to wear her coats inside after walks, especially at breakfast time. She has three coats and one sweater, I guess that makes her a real fashion plate.

I want to thank everyone for all their great suggestions for winter coats.  I went through about 10 different websites before Christmas and ended up getting a Chilly Dog coat.  It arrived the day before yesterday and I think Hans is going to really appreciate it.  It's been much colder and snowier than usual this December here in the Chicago area, so I'm not exactly looking forward to the next couple of months.  It's fleece-lined with a fleece collar.  Everbell is right - it was a bit more expensive than some but it looks really well constructed and it's very easy to put on.  Here's Hans modeling his new coat.

That is a nice coat.  How big is your dog?  And what size did you buy?

Texas Belle - Hans is 65 lbs. On their website, www.chillydogs.ca, they ask for 4 measurements. Here's what Hans' were, all in inches:

Body Length (neck to base of tail) - 24
Chest Girth (thickest point) - 30
Chest Width - 8
Neck Girth - 15

I got the Great White North coat, size - 24-M.

The first two measurements were pretty easy, but I'm not sure I got the others right. Regardless, the coat seems to fit pretty well except that the neck portion seems a bit loose. I like the underbelly flap with the strap around the mid-part of the dog with an easy buckle. It's also washable, which was a must.

It was $89 Canadian plus $15 for shipping. The total ended up being $89.13 US on Dec. 23rd - not sure how volatile the US/Canadian exchange rate is so the amount may vary. So far, though, I think it was worth it. Hans has already started getting excited when I put his coat on because he knows we're going out!

Hans looks sooo handsome in his new Jacket. He is sooo adorable. He could have not got a better Xmas present than a new jacket for this winter. Wisconsin broke every snow record by getting 46" of snow in the month of December. Hope the rest of winter doesn't go like this. Rocky neoprene jacket is serving him well, but could use some boots like Michigan girl as he lifts his paws when our temps get sub zero

Went on the chillydog web site and measured Rocky acording to the fitting room directions. His body length is 26" chest girth 34" Chest width 11" Neck girth 18" so I think he measures into an L- 26 jacket.  He weighs about 84lbs so maybe when we can run him in open fields this spring again can get him closer to the 75lbs he should be. Really nice web site for jackets. Thank you for sharing!!!

Evanston,

I like that coat, it isn't too hunterish, nor is it fru fru. I still havent had much luck in finding a coat that will fit my beast that is in my price range, his size, NOT pink, with bows or a lot of fluff...

Too bad they are out of my price range :((

We are getting tons of snow today about 2 feet have fallen and it's still coming down. This gave me the chance to finish sewing Rayne's fleece coat. It's my own design and all my girls have them. At 6 months, Rayne was a bit too small to fit any of my assortment of winter dog apparel. Here she is:

Carrie,

How big is your dog? I can trace one of the coats for you and try to explain it.
