I hate to be a wet blanket, but Jasper recently smashed a tooth "to smithereens," as the Doggie Dentist said, and in his "Drawer of Shame" were chew hooves, processed bones, and Nylabones!  None of which Jasper ever got anyway!  (None of my dogs have ever been at all interested in them, actually.)

Wow -- there is quite a difference between Rocky this weekend and the 92 lb. photos! You are really doing a great job with him. It's so hard to keep to a limited diet, but when you see these results, it is really worth it. Don't have any advice re: chewing subsitutes...we don't give anything because we've had problems with all the different options. With Maggie, we would let her tear up stuffed animals only in our presence (because otherwise she would injest too much of the stuffing) and she wouldn't play with anything else. Axle likes to retrieve, so we just throw stuffed animals or any kind of toy or ball and then take them away when we are done playing. I miss not being able to give a rawhide or some other chew toy and get an hour's worth of piece and quiet, but avoiding the tummy trouble is more important.

Hope you keep feeling better, Rocky!

PS: Love the photo with Rocky and your son.

Oh wow, Rocky is looking good! It is usually a very long process to take the weight off a dog (easier to put on), but maybe the GSP metabolism helps. He looks great in that last photo in the field. Continued good luck with him!

Don't worry Vinros53 Rocky is a turbo chewer and has chewed on much worse than a nylabone without breaking a tooth . Rocky only chews at night in the livingroom laying on his rug when we are there relaxing watching TV and Reading newspapers. I am going to use scents rubbed on the bones to keep renewing his interest .  Rocky always chews on bones when we are there to supervise as no bone is ever 100% safe. So sorry to hear Jasper broke a tooth on a nylabone  When you think all the chewing our GSPs do during their lives, it is amazing they still have any teeth when older Will keep you informed how it goes

Isn't  it also true how some of our GSPs pack on weight easily no matter how active, while others are trying to find ways to put weight on their GSPs???

The same sort of thing happened with our eldest cat -- she was quite chunky and then dropped a LOT of weight in one year. Turns out she has hypothyroidism -- we just thought she was looking a lot better (BAD parents!!!). It's amazing how much better they look (and feel) when they lose that extra poundage.

Rocky's looking awesome and I'm sure he'll be flying in the snow this winter without the few extra pounds :)

What a difference in Rocky. I even notice it in his facial expression. Of course maybe that had something to do with the hat. Way to go Rocky.

Cannot believe the difference with a lighter GSP   Before this happened I was attributing his slowness to aging, not weight. Boy was I wrong. ... Pointer Fan you are right, Rocky has a sad face cause he doesnot like wearing hats  Bean girl, pm Rocky and said the bottom picture( before pic) " Rocky looks like a " Chunky Monkey"!!  Though that saying was really cute!! ..Rocky greatly appreciates all your compliments

Molly has chunked up a bit this fall so we have her on a diet.  She has retaliated by clearing the counters ( got some chocolate (not much) , 3 wheat rolls and an entire loaf of white bread.  She has also learned how to open the fancy trashcan.

Pointer I have a similar problem with Wachter... He is notorious for clearing the counters and opening all the trashcans (yes he steps on the foot peddle and sticks his nose in the can... so far the only trashcan he can't get (if we close the drawer all the way) is the kitchen.

As for weight.. I have been struggling to get weight on Wachter, we just recently switched him to science diet, and now I have him outside during the day to help him fuzz up a bit and get acclaimated to colder weather, ironically this is what has calmed him down A LOT!!

Oh!!! Pointer Fan, Molly is not alone at increase counter surfing, garbage dog invader trying to get more treats Glad to hear we are not the only ones who have a GSP displaying the GSP food surfing behavior Rocky did counter surf an end of whole grain wheat bread before I could catch him. Also didnot mention, during our Thanksgiving meal, Rocky lifted the whole Coolwhip container off the back counter when no one was looking!!  When caught, was licking the empty container in the living room. I checked the label on the container and to my relief only had 2% FAT.. Cannot believe Molly girl didnot leave one slice of bread for you out of that loaf. She must have been a hungery girl  Then after our dogs eat loafs of bread, whole containers of cool whip, we wonder how can they ever lose weight?? Almost like being defeated by the dog. ..Wacher sounds like a true counter surfer too and an expert garbage can digger. I have to take all meat smelling garbage outside to cans Rocky is not around. Other wise Rocky cannot keep his self out of the garbage I never had a dog that couldnot put weight on so don't know what that would be like...
