First of all.....WHAT DID I GET MYSELF INTO????
I have always had German Shepherds and one of these little clowns showed up at my kids school the other week as one of the auction prizes for the schools fund raiser. Well I went home pulled up a bunch of websites and information about the breed and decided hey they sound like a smart...active...family dog that is smaller and less furry than a german shepherd.
Well as of last saturday Minnie has entered our family...named Minnie because one of her patches looks like the Mickey Mouse ears and head...make sense...it did to our kids...4(girl)and 6(boy...the boy cried when he realized he had a new puppy and carries her every where and even does the potty training when home). We won the auction and got her...free hunting training...free bird hunt...free spay if we want and probally will...all for $725.
We had a couple accidents in the house the first day but nothing since. She steals a shoe every once in awhile, but other wise just a smart a$$ puppy being a puppy. I plan on joining the local kennel club just for the social and training aspects of it and the nice indoor facility for when it is to cold to be outside...she gets cold quick.
Well yesterday I find this site and see all the horror stories...someone please reassure me that this only 10% of the dogs!! I am looking for a smart...non-goofy family dog that won't destoy the house. I seen that one owners love seat and thought...oh my did I screw up??!
Sorry so long and for mistakes, but there is a puppy on my lap taking a nap!
Anyone in the Green Bay ready for a puppy play date??

First of all WELCOME! I'm in Milwaukee area. But we have placed some GSPs in your area.
I want to scream everytime I hear of a "raffle" dog. People who end up with the prize, generally have no clue what they are getting into. And here you are. If you need anything, please contact me.

Welcome Elmo and Minnie!
I am not as experienced as most on this list but I would recommend crate training right away. When we leave the house Benelli goes into her crate or she goes into her run outside when it is nice. She has not been destructive yet well, unless you can call shredding paper and toilet paper destructive . She can shred a roll of toilet paper in a minute or less. These are the most loveable dogs that you can have! Dont shy away. She will steal your heart!
Post pics when you get a chance! |

| We have had a GSP in our home for a total of 33 years over 3 dogs. We now have Molly who is 6 years old. In my opinion they are a great family dog, love kids and are playful. They need to be trained and exercised. I agree with Flygirl about crate training although Molly now has the run of the house. The first year is probably the most destructive time as it is with most puppies. I can't imagine owning any other breed which most of the people on this board would probably agree with. I think your kids just got a great friend. |

Welcome to the site. How old is Minnie? I have lived with 3 GSDs,at different times, and it has been my experience that a GSP is less destructive. Truthfully, any breed, dog, is a terror if not raised properly. This entails knowing their place in the family and training. It also helps when everyone in the family wants the dog and that they all understand their responsbility towards the dog and what expectations there are of the dog. I do not know what horror stories you are referring to - all the posts are general, run of the mill puppy stuff. If these stories frighten you - you better head for the door and start running now. LOL. How about a picture of the little cutie? Francine |

GSPs are great family dogs. As flygirl said crate training is a life saver. Also, make sure your pup gets lot's of exercise and trained for obedience. GSPs have the most problems when they are left to their own devices. They are incredibly smart and creative as you saw with the sofa, but if they have a job like obedience, running, biking, hunting, etc, and are properly exercised they do fine. Gardens on the other hand often suffer when they are puppies. So, if you have a nice yard and don't want holes in it, then put your pup in a run. Also, they can be escape artists so you need a good fence that they can't go over or an electronic fence. GSPs love to be with their people more than anything on earth and are often referred to as velcro dogs because they love to be touching you, and they thrive on love and attention.
I have two females, Belle who is 5, Halo who is 3, and my 5 month old male, Ringo. I can't imagine owning any other breed.
PS - You can start obedience training now, just keep it short and fun.
Oh, and post pictures. |

I thought the same thing when they said they were going to Raffle a dog, but I did some research and had a good idea what I was getting into and met the dog a few times before deciding, but a lot of people who were bidding had no idea until that night what kind of dog it was.
I am actually not having any problems what so ever other than the occasional shoe or newspaper running past me...just normal puppy stuff my shepherds use to do, but they all turned out somewhat normal and great family dogs.
By the way I grew up in Oak Creek and get that way often!

Minnie is 9 weeks old and currently just ran in here and got on my lap.
I am not horribly worried....hell if I went by my one website one of the motorcycles I own should never make it past the end of the driveway, but 20,000 miles later not as much as a hiccup.
And yes I did see the couch....that is when I was wondering if the other website info was a little off.
The kids do a good job of wearing her out.

Elmo,
What cuties!!!
As for the items running by you, we have the same issue. I just tell Benelli not yours and then I calmly go get it from her. She knows and drops it when I tell her that it isn't hers. If my girls ages 10, 9, and 8 see her with something they tend to run after her to get it then she thinks it is a game. |

Thanks flygirl....they are all pretty cute aren't they?? Luckily they look like mom...the kids not Minnie! I am starting to think she thinks she's a lap dog. I will get some more pictures up soon. |

I have had American Bulldogs for 20 years and loved them for their on-off switch which was more off than on, very calm, mellow dogs that can fire up nicely if you so desire So here I am with my first and very wiggly GSP, and it only took one day to be completely sold on this breed forever. I got worried too, after viewing some of these posts, one with a list of injuries these silly dogs get themselves into and one with a photo of THAT couch. But with my Tessa at least, I feel like whatever she does, I could never second-guess my decision to get a GSP, she makes up for every mishap tenfold...sweet, loving and eager to please even as a puppy. Definitely get a crate though |

All of my other dogs were crate trained for about the first year up until my last one...she was a great dog, but never had enough trust to try leaving her out when I was gone.
I am a Stay at Home Dad, so the crate time is minimal. |

Ooo. Lucky dog! There are days I consider quitting my job just to be home with Bo full time. Cute picture of the babies -- I have some of Bo that look like that when he was 8 to 10 weeks old. Since hubby and I both work full-time, we crate-trained from night one, which is very useful for the occassional time when you may have to leave her to run errands. Better to get her used to the crate and then not need it when she proves herself trustworthy, then to try and train her afterwards. Bo is my first dog, and although year one was, to say the least, trying (complicated by the illness and death of my father in law), year two is totally proving to be well worth it. He is now my husband's full-time running partner (6 to 8 miles a day) and we love letting him go off leash in the woods near us. The best part is, once he's been exercised, he is now a total snuggle-bug. Enjoy! |

Rayne has discovered garbage cans..... This has opened a whole new assortment of things running past me! I hoping carrying all kinds of wierd and wonderful objects i.e a size 12 mens heavy duty running shoe, a thumb tack, a dime, pop cans, etc is going to translate into her being an awesome retriever down the road. We'll have to wait and see..... Crates are a great thing and I recommend introducinh one to your puppy. As Joce said you never know when you might want to use one. I take my dogs out in the van a lot and they often spend a few hours crated in there while I'm at a dog event. It's good to know they're safe and comfy. Gail |

| I would crate train also. Many times we have gone on road trips and there are no pet friendly hotels. |

| Someone on this forum suggested soda cans on the counters to deter the dogs from jumping up -noise would scare them. Well, Benelli would take them and run so we went to the mouse traps. She doesn't hop up anymore. Now for the trash can.........toilet paper roll..........homework papers........ |

| Welcome to the wonderful world of GSPS! As the owner of that former loveseat, I can say with absolute certainty that it was a BAD OWNER & not a BAD DOG situation! I hadn't tired him out the way I should and he got bored while I was at work. The most important thing to remember (so you don't have to learn the lesson the hard way like I did!) is that a tired GSP is a good GSP! |
