I am about to put a deposit on a pup from 6R Upland Kennels in Grinnel, Iowa. I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of reputation he has other than what I see on his website.

I am not familiar with them but ever so curious I looked at their website, the first thing that struck me is that they proudly announce that they just had their first dog hip-checked and he was rated excellent. Which is a good thing, however, they state they have been breeding this line for 65 years...without getting any of their dogs checked?

I am by no means trying to stir up anything, they may very well have fine, healthy dogs. It's just when I did my research, it came up again and again, make sure the dogs were checked for hereditary diseases. Ultimately, that made me not get a dog from two litters I had considered. These people were nice folks and experienced hunters/breeders but they didn't have their dogs checked because "there is no need to, our dogs are healthy". At the same time, their dogs did not come with any sort of guarantee so I looked elsewhere. Again, not to say that they have bad dogs, just wasn't entirely comfortable with it.

I would at least get some kind of health guarantee. In writing.

I had my Dad do some checking on them, and is not done yet, he has verified that the Moesgaard line produces and outstanding product. His GSP Mick has this line and at 2 is turning into quite a dog. Dad is checking the breeder background and some other things for me with his friends that are in Iowa and Kansas.

Good point with the OFA paperwork. I am working on getting copies of his paperwork on both dogs so hopefully I should find out more soon. I'll keep everyone updated and then in the Spring I'll start posting pics for everyone.

My dog's parents have are CERF, CD, Hips, and Cardiac tested, and I was able to look up their parents' records online:

www.offa.org/display.html

I wonder if you can look up their dog(s) here as well...

I have had enough dogs to know that any offspring is still a crapshoot, meaning, things can still go wrong healthwise, but it shows that these people put a lot of thought into their breedings.

Again, I don't mean to say that you will not get an excellent dog from 6R Upland...

No I totally understand what you are saying and I agree totally. That is why I am researching and having people dig a little.

We bought our second shorthair from 6R upland kennels and would highly recommend them.
Chris has become a good friend of ours and will always stay in touch with him.
I would never bother calling the breeder from my first ghorthair, he is an arrogant jerk that just wants you to give him your money and get out.
Chris at 6R is very friendly and you can tell he really cares about his dogs allot.
Doddy is ten months old now and we are already hunting with her.
She is doing very good. I will have videos on youtube of her when I figure out how to do that sort of thing. I will post a link to them when I get around to it.

Thanks I was hoping to hear some good things. Chris told me about his two year written guarantee as well. I am sure I will get a quality dog from him.

Just so you know, I don't believe ;'Moesgaard' is a registered kennel name, anyone can slap it on a dog. The dogs with the name on them now are so far removed from the original kennel in Denmark, it doesn't really matter.
When I buy pups I want records of preformance for many, many generations, with no dogs being gunshy, bad coats, health issues.
Since they don't have any of these on their site, I would travel and go out in the field with the pups parents and see them work, and preferable see some of their pups work also.
