I got up this morning and around 8:00a.m. I went and opened Indy's kennel so he could come out but instead he was very lazy and slow to get up, he was walking listlessly and had his head bowed when usually he would be stretching and then proceed to be very excited to go outside so I immediatly knew he wasn't feeling good, when I let him out he had a very loose stool, very liquidy like water with no solids. i felt the need to go to his kennel to see if he had any accidents or threw up and I found a small-medium amount of throw up in the corner of his kennel but nothing unusual just looked like his food chewed up. He went right into his kennel afterwards and aside from me insisting he go out for the bathroom all he does is lie down in his kennel. He was just fine yesterday didn't show any signs of being ill or feeling sick, just wanted to play and run!
Yesterday my mom mentioned that he got into my fathers chile plant and even unrooted one and was carrying it around with him like a treat! I'm hoping he just has an unset stomach from the chiles I'm sure he chewed up but can anyone give me advice on how to care for him right now? Should he have no access to food and only water? should I feed him rice to calm his stomach or can I gve him something? If this persist tomorrow I'll be taking him to the vet but for now I want to treat him here. |

| I like to give stuff like this 48 hours. You know what has caused this and there is nothing a vet can do for him. I would offer water but withhold food until tomorrow and then only a small amount. Poor doggie, wonder if he will chew on them again? |

My vet prefers Pepto Bismol over Kaopectate. You can get pepto tablets or liquid. Gail |

| Thanks for the info, he still has an upset stomach earlier I gave him some water and he threw it up? I will keep a close eye on him and is it ok to lay with him or is it better to keep him alone in his kennel I hate to see him this way. keep you all updated. |

UPDATE:
Last night I let Indy sleep on my bed with me instead of his kennel so he could be a little more comfy and closer to me. This morning when I got up he was still posted on the bed awake and a bit more energetic than yesterday. I tried to feed him some rice for breakfast but he had none of it. when I took him out to go potty it was the same loose stool as yesterday. He drank water this morning and was fine but a bit ago he drank some water and regurgitated it about 20 minutes later, nothing in it just water.
I called up the vet and they said to bring him in but any vets gonna tell me that. I have no choice but to wait until tomorrow to take him to the vet for a check up and go from there. He isn't as sleepy as yesterday though he did jump on me once or twice and hes got some more pep in his step but you can tell hes still not feeling good. I gave him some pepto so hopefully he feels a bit better until tomorrow. |

You might try giving him some full-fat yogurt, just a couple of spoonsful. I wouldn't get all crazy with the rice, and this's and that's. Its the quickest way to IBS by doing all the remedies first and not just letting things run their course, particularly with GI symptoms. Does he have any temp at all and is he drinking a normal amount of water? Of course, being from the Southwest my dogs tend to get into things like chiles, etc. If there are chiles on the plants those can cause some eye and stomach irritation, but it shouldn't be ongoing. Have you changed food lately or seen any other changes in his normal daily routine? These are all things you might want to take a look at. Best of luck, and let us know how he's doing. UPDATE: Indy hasn't gotten any etter since this morning, he hasn't eaten all day and he drinks water but can't hold it in, he will throw it up within 20 minutes of drinking it and after he will throw up some mucusy saliva that's the same color but slimy, the water and mucus has a yellowish tint to it. I can't take himt to the vet now but will first thing in the morning, does anyone have an idea of what he's got it's got me very worried! |

Thanks for the reply, I don't have an emergency vet here yet because i just moved and don't really know the area. The chiles are from guatemala, my dad brought some seeds with him from his trip so I'm not sure what type they are exactly. I'll keep you all updated. |

Some questions and comments: First, the yellow is bile. It means he is totally empty and is bringing up bile from the small intestine (rather than just stomach contents). Bile is very irritating to the GI tract on its way up. Second - have you taken his temp? Third - I would be concerned that he has a blockage somewhere since water stays down a short time and then always comes up. Fourth - he is almost certainly dehydrated by now, perhaps dangerously so. He needs treatment asap.

| The yellow stainingr would indicate bile is being vomited. (its kind of like when we have tummy flu or dry heaves). Did you give him anything to tempt his appetite (flavored yogurt is good for that). Definitely you need to get with your vet asap, if not an emergency clinic. Any other GSP folks in your area that you could call for a quick reference? Try to keep him warm and hydrated, so he doesnt get shocky on you too. |

I was wondering if he had a bowel blockage too. He could have ate some big piece of the plant and got it stuck inside there? I a tually pulled about a foot long piece of straw out of Belle once. There was only a small pie e sticking out and I was suprised something like that could pass through. Any new food or anything like that? I have given my dogs a peppermint before for upset stomach. Sounds like it's something else though. Maybe viral? Was he near any other dogs? |

HI Finsol not to alarm you but does not sound good, this breed dehydrate easily for some reason. I don't know if you live in an isolated area, but if not, and you are new can I suggest you talk to other dog owners and ask for details of their vet? Yogurt is a good idea as it may do something for the stomach and it has some moisture. But sickness this long does pose a risk to your dog. At the very least he needs a drip to get some liquid into him. Good luck taking him to the vet - it may not be something serious, ie something that the vet can deal with quickly and easily. What makes it serious is if nothing is done (ie no vet) and Indi gets too dehydrated. Best of luck and let us know. Please take into account that I am only trying to be helpful. Claudia |

Why not google-search for vets in your area? I always look up vets if I plan to travel to a place unknown to me, just in case... Please keep us posted. |

| Some vets recommend not using pepto because i believe it can cause the same reaction as aspirin. In low doses its fine but as a precaution its best for a vet to recommend something that won't cause reactions. I'd be careful with petpo. And yes any vet is going to say bring him in because you cannot, absolutely should not diagnose over the phone (big no no in vet world). take him to the vet and they will tell you what is wrong with your dog, if there's nothing major then the price of the office visit should cover your piece of mind. |

I disagree about the pepto, it contains only bismuth and dye. your vet can give you a "special" bismuth for dogs that is white and comes in a few flavours. it is exactly the same as the pink one minus the dye, our vet likes the vanilla one himself.
Peppers are considered a nightshade vegetable and should be avoided by pets as far as I know (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant). If he ate any of the actual plant he could be feeling pretty bad.
