We are planning a winter travel car trip between Wisconsin and Maine and will be traveling with our GSP Rocky. We need to know if anyone knows hotel chains or individual holets that will except dogs and their humans for the night. All information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Try this web site www.hotdealsonmotels.com/pets I have never used it but atleast they list hotels for dogs. Also we found that Best Western always took dogs. Hope this helps. |

Thank you for the information as we will have to plan the road map and book ahead reserving end first floor rooms so Rocky doesnot have to hear people and others walking by. He can be a guard and be barky Rocky has a deep big low bark when he is guarding!! So I may pack a box fan to run in the room to block some of the outside noises. We will not leave him alone in the motel room. Web site will be fine as I can type in the city and dates to find pet friendly motels. Thanks again.

Marie -
I think you will find after a few times Rocky will be fine and quiet in the room and you won't need the fan. I use to think everybody in the hotel could hear our dogs if they barked but we have been told how well behaved and quiet they were. I am sure Rocky will do GREAT. We found that an upstairs room at the end was good because on the first floor people are above you pounding around. Also if Rocky is use to sleeping in a crate or has a special blanket/dog bed you will want to bring it. A rawhide or chew thing is good too because it keeps them busy. If you book the rooms ahead of time ask them what type of dog walking area they have. Is Rocky use to doing his business on a leash? If no you might want to start training him before you leave. Hope this helps. You will have a great time taking Rocky with you. |

The good news is that Rocky is trained to do his business on leash and also is trained to sleep on his dog bed in our bedroom at night which we can take along. (Rocky flunked crate training). He is very good in the house when we are gone and never has torn anything up or chewed on furniture while we are gone. Thank you for the Top floor suggestion. Top floor, end room it will be and Rocky is used to riding on elevators (pet therapy facilties) and he is great going up flights of stairs. Guardy Barky is what I really have to work on for travel. . We may rent a hotel room around here where we live and practice with Rocky and see what happens!!!!

| A lot of AmericInns will take dogs but you need to call. Usually you have to be in a smoking room & they say the dog must be crated & never left alone, we just say OK, tehe Ruger is never in a crate! He does bark when the maids come by with there carts. |

Both La Quinta (www.lq.com) and Red Roof Inns (www.redroof.com) are happy to have dogs. You can map a route online with Red Roof and once you have your route down, check with La Quinta also for availability.
If its a rather obscure route that you are taking , the website http://www.petswelcome.com may give you some others that aren't part of chains but may be local mom and pop spots. There are also other spots on their homepage to check out kennels, bed and breakfasts, commercial stuff, etc.
Good luck and enjoy your trip ! You can also check online at www.gasbuddy.com to see how gas prices are ranging on your trip route.

RED ROOF INN!!!!! They are great! We do dock jumping and take 3-4 dogs with us and always stay there. They are wonderful. We nor any other dock divers have ever had any problem with having dogs there. No extra pet charge either. We always bring a fan as well due to our male being protective. He is getting a lot better though and we have not used it on the past couple trips. Red Roof rooms also have fans in the room that can be pretty loud. I would recomend doing a business suit with them as the rooms are a bit bigger as well. This is nice when a dog is with!

Thank you soooo much for all the travel information. It is greatly appreciated. It will be fun to travel with our dog Rocky. He has never been in a hotel, but as long as he is in the room with us I feel he will do fine. I am also going to look for Dog parks and other parks along the way to let him exercise off leash. Talked to my oldest brother John who we plan to visit in Pittsburgh PA and he says his house is pet friendly and Rocky is welcome. |

| I have stayed in Super 8, Baymont Inns, Best Western, Fairfield Inn, and I will be in Red Roof this Wednesday and I have had no issues. Red Roof and one of the Baymonts had no fee at all. It sometimes depends on the location for some of the hotels. The Fairfield Inn had an outrageous fee but I used my points for the stay so the pet fee didn't hurt so much. |

Thank You Matt for the additonal hotels as I am making a list to track across the states that we wil be traveling thur. I am going to contact each one and make sure they will be OK with an 85 lb 27 inch shoulder height GSP tall boy!!! As with my first male GSP,Poge, we ran into problems of hotels not accepting dogs over 45 lbs and Poge was 65lbs 25" shoulder height. So lots of home work for me. Good thing I have a few months to plan |

| Red Roof says one pet is welcome but the one I just called said that they never saw anyone turned away that showed up with more than one. One Super8 that I stayed at actually had a weight limit but I just made sure I never took Jake through the lobby and they never saw him. |

Also, sometimes hotels list "pet friendly" and really only have one or two rooms that they allow pets in. They treat pets kind of like smoking rooms, there's only some and you have to request it. Keep that in mind, and call ahead to request a pet room to be safe. Have a good trip! |

The number one great thing when taking a dog on the road is having them pee/poop on command. A dog doesn't have a clue that it is going to be in the car, or in the room, for the next few hours and to go now. Nothing more frustrating than stopping at a rest stop, the dog not performing, then needing to go just 10 minutes down the road. (Unless it is checking into the motel, needing to get to the restaraunt, and not sure if the dog is ready for an hour alone....) |

Ayres just sparked my memory and I would like to add that if the hotels do only have a few "pet rooms" I would have a back up plan. I got stoked into that once and the room was disgusting. Make sure theres another hotel near by or something. Or atleast get a look at the room first. I also seem to get jammed in the bad rooms because the size of my dog. I always try to stray from the people that only accept small pets. |

Rocky is really great at pooh and pee on command and on a short leash. I have had dogs that were the opposite and I had to walk them 6 fields before they would do anything. that can be real frustrating especially if you are pressed for time. Never knew Hotels have just pet rooms. I will ask that question and try to stay away from them. Thank you for the added info |

Lisa, Rocky and I live 20 miles west of Oshkosh WI in a small town of Berlin. Rocky is blessed with alot of farm fields to run in and small game pheasant farms to flush birds up. And near by there are several small lakes for him to swim. So Rocky has a perfect forever home and 2 parents that love him very much.
