Hello,
So I bought a GSP from a breeder here in Las Vegas today. Well, I did do my research too well I guess. She is solid black (with a bit of white on her chest) and is three months old.
I read in the AKC that any black is discuqlified.
The breeder http://www.greatbasinkennel.com/ stated that he got the black GSP from Missouri, and that he will ahve the paperwork on Monday. he mainly deals with English Pointers.
I wont take her back because i like her already. So I took her to the vet and he told me that she is probably a mix because GSps are usually liver and white w spots. He said he had never seen a black GSP.
Are there black GSPs? |

there are plenty of black and white gsps out there and they can compete in any field event they are not recognized in the ring in this country |

Perhaps this will answer some questions for You AND your Vet:
The Black GSP-History and Origin
They are able to be fully Registered with AKC and the only thing they are disqualified from is the Show Ring. They are eligble to Hunt Test, Trial or any other performance events.

Yeah there have been a couple of times you have posted pictures and the kids make a statement of "I don't remeber wigglebutt doing THAT!!" Gunner is older than my beast (Wachter's estimated B-day was a little over a week ago, since we found him October 24th of last year. THey have almost the same face markings (white around the muzzle, chocolate brown eyes, black everything else)

Welcome to the wonderful world of the GSP.
As an owner of a black and white roan GSP, I must warn you, the black GSP's can be vicious.
Never turn your back on them for a moment. As anybody on this site will tell you, it is well documented that these black GSP's have a very dark side and cannot be trusted.
Our 9 month old Phoenix needs to be locked up at night, as we fear for our life if we were to fall a sleep with out restraints on her.
If you take all the necessary safety precautions, (ie. keep small children in a seperate room) you should be ok.
If you have ducks, be especially careful, these black GSP's have been known to destroy them.

| Black GSPs are completely recognized in Germany, where the breed originated. The standard says "Schwarze Farbe in denselben Nuancen wie die braune bzw. Braunschimmelfarbe." meaning that black is allowed in the same tones and graduations as brown and brown ticking. In the U.S., the AKC still excludes them from the showring but I believe you can put other titles on them. I would love to know why that is. Hopefully, it will change one day. Personally, I absolutely love the look of the black GSPs! Educate your vet, and enjoy her! |

The breed standard is controlled by the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America, the parent club of the breed. It is not the AKC that includes or excludes a certain color or size or shape in a certain breed, it is the parent club. To change a breed standard, a 2/3 vote of the membership is required. Non-members, even if they own and breed and show GSPs, have no say. To date, although a majority of the membership have voted in favor, we have not achieved the 2/3 super-majority necessary to change the breed standard to include black pigmented GSPs.
Patte Titus wrote an excellent article, which Bruce referenced above, I think, on the history of the black coat color in the breed.
But to repeat: black GSPs can be AKC resgistered and can and do compete in all the performance events. BTW, the UKC allows black GSps in the bred ring as of January 2007.

Oh yes! They are incredibly vicious! They have even begun to teach cats how to be pack animals, to secure the cat masses in an uprising against the humans!
In all seriousness, there is no difference between a Black and a Liver except color. They are the same all around people and pack loving dog.
I should mention that the lovely and wonderful Eleanor "escampbell", might know a thing or two about competing a Black GSP to the highest levels of their potential! Do share some pix of your pupper please Eleanor! |

| You will want to join a Picture hosting site like Photobucket.com for free. Re-size your photos to 8x5 I think it is and then download them to Photobucket. After downloading to Photobucket, copy the "Direct Link" that ends in .jpeg and then come over here and when you post, you will see what looks like a landscape picture in the posting toolbar, click it and paste the url from the direct link into that and wala, you should be posting pix. I hope I got that all right and understandable! |
