| Looks like the GSP's are becoming the dominant breed in this sport. Watch out Labs! |

Kim and Rob- Even though we haven't met yet we missed you all at the event! It would have been awesome to see 4 out of the 5 divisions won by GSP bred dogs! Hope to see you soon. Make sure to keep that boy healthy for Purina! |

Actually it was 2 out of 5. Champ in Junior, Dude in Master. An APBT won Novice, Lab/ Eng. Pointer mix won Senior, and a Lab won Ultimate. Oskar wasn't totally on this past weekend, but he had HORRENDOUS seasonal allergies hit and all 4 feet were swollen like hooves. I was pretty happy he still managed to go over 20 feet! Kim and Rob---you guys need to come on out to Michigan one of these days! Oskar wants to see his buddy Seven again, and everyone here wants to see Seven jump!!! |

Is the idea to throw the bob as they are jumping or do you have to throw it first before they jump? |

Either way. The first is what we call "the chase", where you throw the toy as the dog is running towards you and you want the dog to follow the toy in the air. This is good for dog's who have good toy drive and will target the toy. In practice you want them to catch the toy so they know it's possible, so in competition you can throw the toy out further ahead of them and get bigger jumps. It's kind of almost an art form. The better you throw, the better you can get your dog to jump. We also have a new game at UAD we started this year called Catch-it, where the dog must catch the toy in the air for the distance to count, they get 2 jumps, and the 2 jumps get added together for a score. The other method used is the place and send. This is where you walk the dog to the edge of the dock, throw out a toy, let them mark it, walk them back to the beginning of the dock, and release the dog. I would recommend using a larger toy that sits high in the water, like a big Jolly Ball or Loopie, so they can see the toy the whole time and aren't slowing down at the end to look for it. I use both methods with Oskar. He is VERY consistent with the place and send and still has a decent pop even though he's not following a toy in the air. The chase, well he's real finicky and GSP like, and will only do it if the water and the air are warm. I haven't figured that one out yet, why the place and send is ok at all times, even if it's cold, but the chase only sometimes? Both ways have negatives and positives; for example, the chase you need to have good aim and timing (and a dog that chases!), and for the place and send alot of dogs lose their pop and jump really flat, but you can get a lot of speed. You just have to find what works for your dog. |

I mentioned 3 out of 5 because the other was a pointer mix. Sorry I didn't find any pictures on our computer of Oskar from this weekend. I looked and looked. I must have missed him. Will you be in PA sara? |

Sara - Isn't Ella a Lab/GSP mix? She calls her a Germador. She won Seniors, didn't she? |

If you make it we should try and have all the GSPs jump off the dock together...I don't know if it will work, but it would be a great picture. Since they seem to be taking over the dock. Sara, I'm sorry to hear about Oskar's allergies...it sounds painful, but if he's anything like Seven he jumped anyway We hope he's feeling better!!! |

Beth, we should be going to PA, I'm planning on it. My parents live only less than an hour from Pitt, and my grandparents live in Pitt. Matt, Ella is Mossberg's sister and the Mapes are sure Mossberg is 1/2 Lab, 1/2 English Pointer. Kim and Rob, it will be great to see you guys again!!! We will definitely have to try to get a shot of Oskar and Seven going off the dock together! Scott and I tried it at the Cherry Fest with Gunner (he's a GSP/Lab cross that looks like Oskar with a tail) but we couldn't get them timed to jump at the same time. Can Seven do the place and send? You guys use the Jolly Ball sometimes so he probably will. That seems to be the best way to do it. I took Oskar right to the vet and got him on some good antihistamines and steroids and he's much better. And of course, he still was all about jumping even though his feet were nasty. Last winter, he broke a toenail going up steps to the dock (these were the venues steps and dock, not UAD's!). It was so gross I thought I was going to puke, he broke it at the base of the toenail and it was shooting blood. Dummy still was wagging his tail and staring at the dock, he wanted to keep jumping! It was so bad he had to be put out to cut off the remaining hanging nail, but he didn't care. I'm pretty sure he would jump with a broken leg!!! |

I don't know how you get those dogs to jump like that but it is so cool! Mocha is like a missile chasing her frisbee. Hunter will launch off the deck like a Gazelle. All my dogs except Mocha do that spinning thing too. Mocha lost a nail like that twice! They had to put her out both times. I had to leave the vets office until they were waking her up. She's my baby.
I wish I could get some action shots of mine but our digital has a delay and I always miss the shots! Your dogs are awesome! I love the airborne shots! |

| Keep an eye on the web site www.ultimateairdogs.net and stop by an event some time with you dogs and have all the great people there give you a helping hand. I am sure we could get your GSP's to jump at some point! |

OK, thanks. That looks like so much fun. Tundra looks like a great dog. I also really like the pic of Oskar in the air with his mouth open. Looks like he came off a trampoline. He looks like a huge GSP. How much does he weigh? He looks way taller than my male is.

He's a pretty tall boy, never measured him with a stick so I don't have an accurate height. He isn't that heavy though b/c he's really really lean and no fat whatsoever. He fluctuates between low 60's to close to 70 pounds. He is one of the tallest GSP's I've seen though, probably b/c he's mostly German lines. You should definitely try to come on out to a UAD event---I always love seeing more GSPs and it looks like they are quietly taking over the sport! |

It appears that there aren't any more events near here until next year. I would really like to see one. Maybe even put hunter into one just for fun.
My male is about 56#. Yours' just looks way taller. He looks great. I will keep on the lookout for something nearby even if it's next year. Not much here because I'm out in the boonies.

| Oh wow, you're way up there! I don't think I know of anyone from UAD that far north. I know some people go to cabins up that way, you should get on the UAD website and post. www.ultimateairdogs.net I know we may be having a fun jump at someone's pond near St. Clair if you'd like to come on down for that. The furthest north event we've had is one of our biggest, at the National Cherry Festival. We also had an event in Birch Run in Feb., not sure if we're doing that again or not? Right now is when our season really slows down and we'll start doing indoor shows here and there. |
