Thanks Prairie Fire! I wondered about the bumper thing and laughed my head off when I saw what it was. We have one or two I just didn't know the name !! I was thinking it (a barrier) would have been handy when at about 3 months she started taking the knees out from under me when we were running. But to stop that I put jinglies on her collar so I could hear her coming and prepared myself. After I was a pretty solid target to hit a time or two she didn't do it anymore. Although she does tease sometimes by brushing past at full speed but she doesn't make contact anymore.
We play catch with the thingy that I now know is called a bumper to play her out. Is that the right idea? I don't let her chew it as she has Kongs and other stuff to chew on.

You too? Man, Otto took me out more than a few times. On one occassion, he hit me so hard I couldn't wear shorts for more than two weeks. My leg was black and blue from the knee down, with a huge knot the size of a silver dollar above my ankle. I looked like I had been beaten with a baseball bat. He just banked his turn a bit too sharp and his feet went out from under him--and moving as fast as he was, he was able to do some real damage. If I had been the puppy-kicking sort, that might have been the night. Though I would never have been able to catch him hopping on one leg! Dang good thing that critter is as cute as his is!
As far as the bumper, I'm really no expert. I use it for retrieving practice and general "wear out the puppy time". I did throw one away this summer after a lab with a hard mouth punched a few holes in it up at the lake. Once it filled with a little water, it would make a really neat squishy sound if Otto would chew on it. Not sure if this was over-reacting, but I didn't want something that would give him an incentive/reward to chew, so I pitched it and bought a new one.

Well he does bite more when he is excited, but I have been doing the "grab his head & say NO BITES" & it seems to be working. He still does it but not as much. He is very smart, hasn't gone pee in the house for almost 2 weeks & never pooped in the house. Went for a walk in our woods today & he pointed something.
here is a pic of him in the woods & the one with the horses looking at him when he went in the pasture. Shocked his tail on the way out, haha. Hope he learned his lesson this time, his tail was wet!!
