Sometimes that little touch of lab counter balances the zipity doodah of a GSP and makes them a tad more mellow. We have placed a few we've gotten over the years, and they have been highly adoptable and excellent family pets as well as hunters. Then again, over time she will blow that sun bleach if kept outta the sun, cuz her ears are definately more GSP then lab, and that tongue, is truely GSP! I love her little white slippers! I'm so glad your boxer puts up with her! |

Riggo (the boxer) needs the exercise that her exuberance gives him. He barely puts up with her but does nontheless and is teaching her a few things about obediance. I have yet to wear her out even after six hours of running in the woods (not trails but rough old and new growth woods). She pants for about five minutes and then is back at it (whatever 'it' is at that moment). It is my goal to actually 'run her out' one of these days but I am beginning to think that may be impossible. For now she has a 1" diameter hemp rope that she drags around and uses to push/pull a basketball around the yard when she gets bored (how's that for smarts and figuring out a game to play with a ball and a rope?). I realize that these are all old hat things for everybody here but it is mostly unique behaviour compared to the beagles and ridgeback I owned (and definitely unique when compared to a couch potato boxer, lol). More pix tomorrow, thanks everybody. |

LMAO "run her out" Yeah good luck with that!!! These dogs are worse than the energizer bunny, they keep going and going and going.. and if she gets a chance to stop and "rest" you have just hit the reset button and get to start over again. One thing that we have to be careful with as owners is that they do not understand that they have limits, it is up to us to ensure that those limits are set. Like you I have a found pup (mine is not quite year old) I was used to Shih-tzus, miniature Yorkies and Tea Cup poodles, ALL female. Now I have "The Beast" the only large dog and male dog that I have ever owned, so it has been a learning experience, and I have made a LOT of mistakes, but the great thing about this group is they are accepting, as long as you treat your baby with kindness and respect, and well I think you have that nailed down! Welcome, and kudos to you for taking in Libbi! I think it's so cool that she has an older brother boxer. I also had a boxer and a GSP together for many years (the boxer was two years older). They got along great together, although it didn't take long before my GSP (Sport) would tire out my boxer (Flash). Sport would constantly want Flash to play with him, but eventually Flash would just growl or give a bark or two and Sport would back off. Flash, though, was incredibly patient with Sport when Sport was a puppy - Flash ended up with red spots all over his white chest from Sport's sharp puppy teeth. Good luck with your "pack" - you will hopefully have years of fun, craziness and utter love and devotion ahead of you. |

Thanks for the greetings, kind words and pictures of what we like to call 'Libbi's extended family'...she is doing great and I finally got her to sit still for a couple more pics. I also have some nice pics of her on point that I will upload in the coming days. This forum has amazed me with hospitality and I look forward to participating more soon! |

| And PS: I realize it is such a travesty to have a GSP on a lead but in my unfenced yard it is absolutely necessary...she hasn't learned respect for the cars zipping by on the country road in front of our home. She does very, very well in the woods and never even trys to get out of a fenced yard but I suppose there is just something too tempting about what's outside of our unfenced acre that makes her want to go, go, go. She visits the rotweiller up the street and runs circles around him but, we just can't bear the mental picture we have of her running in front of a car. She is learning (slowly but surely) to respect our boundaries but I'm sure everyone here can attest to how 'uphill' of a battle that is. If she had been with us from 8 weeks on then I'm sure she would be smarter about these boundaries but since she was on the run for most of her life she is not used to being restrained to just our small patch of heaven. |

| Ha, maybe you're right, Belle. Perhaps it is my bias showing again wherein I rely on the previous 25 years of raising dogs and apply that (erroneously) to GSP's, huh? Like I said, she is learning to respect the boundaries (for now) and, as I'm sure everyone knows, she is infinitely better when I have ran her for two or three hours or am actively playing with her in the yard. |

| well you now have a life long companion that will always be at your side. Even when you need you think you need 5 mins of peace your little friend will be there to nudge your hand to get soem attention. Owning a shorthair has been one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life. Today I came home and found a bored shorthair mess( everyone knows what I'm talking about) was mad for about 5 minutes and then a feel a nose lifting my hand up to pet him and to apologize. They are truly gentle loyal creatures, you are lucky to have had one find you! |

| Leashes are definitely a must if you live near a road, there are too many things to tempt a GSP out into the path of a car! I have a 30 foot training leash I use when we are near traffic and I know they make training leashes & check cords even longer than that, so the dog has good freedom of movement while still being safe. Kudos to you for thinking of safety first! |

We just got her a 26' leash last weekend that has made her much happier when at home. Thank you for your comments!

Hello Relic Hunter,
Congratulations on your recent find. She looks fantastic.
I was like you. In May 2007 I adopted what I thought was a small, skinny, female chocolate lab from the animal shelter. She even had heartworms that I had to cure. After about a month I started thinking that she didn't act much like a lab and was too skinny. She was supposed to be about 2.5 years old. I started researching dog breeds and concluded that my girl, Terra, was at least part GSP. Probably at least half.
Miss Terra has been the most fantastic dog I've even known. Like you, I live in a rural area, at least most of the year. Terra was good on the leash and in the fenced yard. She loved to go running though. I got an ecollar and started working on getting her to come when I called or to stay with me. She was doing pretty good on these.
Then one evening when I was getting ready to take them out for a walk (I have 2 other dogs too) on the mountainside, Terra and one of the others took off chasing critters. The other one came home after being gone two nights. Terra is still missing. This was June 24th.
Somehow you need to balance keeping Libbi safe and with you with her need to go running and chasing critters. Believe me, it is no fun at all when your most beloved dog goes missing. It appears from your writings that you are totally in love with Libbi. I understand. I am still totally in love with Terra, I just don't know where she is at.
Contratulations again, I really know how happy you must be to have Libbi.

I am so sorry for your loss. Perhaps, just perhaps, she will show up one day on your doorstep...we will keep hoping so. I am just so saddened that your girl has been missing so long. Please keep the faith that one day she might return for stranger things have happened.
