Went to my grandparent's ranch this weekend.  They've got about 3500 acres in south TX.  Didn't take the dogs... they can go another day and after they get a rattlesnake vaccine since that place is crawling with em.

Anyways, here's some of what you're missing out on ;) ..

Yep I know what I'm missing in Texas. Hope I get back before I too old to hunt there on a regular basis. Thanks for the pics.

It's so nice out there! Don't see how anyone could want to be anywhere else!

Hey Somer -

Try to find someone who does snake avoidance training.  It works really good.  I have had both my girls trained and Belle can scent a rattlesnake from about 50 feet away.  The guy that trained my girls says Belle has a magnum nose.  They both will either pull me away from the snake or get between me and snake. In either case we are getting anywhere near the snake.  It isn't 100%, but if they can see, hear or smell it it works.  That coupled with the vaccine (which isn't 100% either) is about as good an insurance policy as you can get.

Do lots of dogs get bit by snakes out there or do they learn to stay away??

Thanks for reminding be about having them snake broke! I checked the Gulf Coast GSP website and I'm in luck!  Actually have one next weekend for $40 a dog so I'll be heading out that way next weekend for sure.

Thanks and it is most definitely hot!  As long as I'm moving around working or doing something then I don't notice the heat! I know the livestock gets bit but I'm not so sure about the dogs there.  There are about 7-8 of them (all dogs that were dumped) and they stay in the fenced backyard and bark to warn us about anyone coming into the ranch.  They aren't friendly ranch dogs, that's for sure.

Nice place! Very green for South Texas.

We did get some decent rain down here (Encino) this year in June and July (Hurricane Dolly). I've been at our ranch regularly this year, and the quail seem to be doing well and they've been paired off for a while. We even spotted a mama quail with 10 chicks in tow. Lots of croton have come up since the rain, so hopefully with that cover we'll have a good quail population this year.

Can't wait till the fall... Hopefully Sofie will get some good experience this year.

It's only green now because of the rain. Usually all brown!

I didn't see any bobs when I went but I could hear them calling everywhere on the ranch.

How is your place down there?  My grandfather on my other side of the family has a deer lease in Bruni and that place is ROUGH!  It was crawling with quail last season but Jake couldn't hardly get 5 feet without landing on another cactus or other assorted prickly vegetation.  I get the privilege of picking out cactus thorns for a week each time we go there.

We're in an area with lots of oak trees and open areas, with some mesquite mixed in, about 15 miles south of Falfurrias. Sandy soil, which allows for plenty of weeds and grasses. There are cactus and sand burrs in some areas, but its not nearly the thick scrub brush you find in other areas of South Texas.

The brown you're talking about will certainly return soon enough, but for now its like a jungle out there!
