Has anyone heard that your dog has a partial tear of their CCL (knee ligament)... Our vet has just told us that she has a partial tear and 2 weeks of strict kennel rest without exercise should heal it up.

Now, she still walks on it, but  trotts with a limp.

My question is this.... should any form of MSM or Glucosamine Chon. be in her supplementation?  If so, what are your recs??  We currently have her on Essential Fatty Acids and NSAIDS.

Frankly I worry about putting a dog like a GSP on pain meds of any kind with an injury like this. They just don't understand "STRICT KENNEL REST" as it is.

Glucosamine or MSM may or may not help. The biggest thing at this point IMO would to keep the dog from crashing around and doing more damage.

Glucosamine and chondroitin helps to regenerate cartiliage. Doesn't do anything for a ligament tear...

Our male American Pit Bull Terrier had that one time. It actualy took him about 8 weeks total to be 100% again. It just takes time and VERY restricted activity. Good luck!

I agree with Meg on the pain meds and GSPs.  They are already so stoic about pain, you put them on pain meds and they think they are ok to run and jump as usual.  Belle tore her bicep tendon when she was about 9 months old and they did surgery to fix it (they actually clipped it loose from the bone and cleaned up the end and left it to reattach itself).  She had to be completely calm (no running or jumping, limited movement, only outside on a leash to go to the bathroom) for 5 weeks.  Halo was also a puppy at the time.  It was not easy, but we did it.  The vet also put her on pain meds and I took her off them the second day she was home. She had a complete recovery and it fine now.  After the 5 weeks we did physical therapy with her to build the muscle back up (swimming in a water tank, treadmill, massage, etc).  You might want to ask your vet about physical therapy as it actually speeds up the recovery process and helps prevent reinjury.
