Brandy is GONE!!!! yes I scared my beast jumping out of my seat cheering, hooting and hollering.. NOW if we could just get rid of barbie dog!

I so love Bill and Star and to be honest I think whats-her name giving up the special room kept her from being completly axed.

I thought that was pretty cool of her to do that though. Whether she did it stragetically or just to be nice; I am not sure.

OK tonight's show was a bunch of come-uppance! Teresa and Leroy got the room :D Bill actually earned it and paid her back for her gift. Laura and Preston OMG the way she threw Bella Starlet under the bus!!! I am not a big fan of barbie dog, but still it is good she got the ax!

The world needs more people like Bill!!!

I agree about Barbie Dog, not my kind of dog at all, but Beth Joy seems like a really nice person who loves her dog. She always hugs people and cries when they leave... although if there were any tears last night, they were tears of joy!

I knew someone would mention the yelping, they spent too much time dwelling on it on camera to just leave it there, but it was still a lousy, underhanded thing to do. Shame on Laura. Kudos to Travis for following his conscence and not his... other brain... when it came time to speak up about the matter.

Galaxy's owner is growing on me, he doesn't seem as abysmally cocky as he did in the beginning, so now I can feel better about rooting for the pointer. (Pointers rule, yappy dogs drool!) Even though his painting was a big mess & not what he intended, I still really liked it. It showed the crazy, madcap, all over the place personality of a pointer really well!

I still think I'd like to see either Travis & Presley or Bill & Star win it.

I'm holding out for Bill and Star. As I've said I like the older guys and they have to go some to be older than me. I agree Travis had guts sticking up for Beth Joy when he had seemed to be interested in Laura.

Pointer I am with you, I am pulling for Bill and Star, although I do have to say that this week that barbie dog and her owner did manage to earn a few more points on the likability scale this week

WOOOHOOO!!!!!

Barbie Dog is gone!!!! NOW I want Andrew gone. The owner there is a nightmare and hateful!

Very interesting to hear the judge's opinion of herself! She claims to be the Goddess of dog training!! OMG talk about ego! as if one technique works for EVERY dog. I am not the biggest fan of Galaxy's guy, but like he said earlier, the proof is in the pudding! Galaxy is very attentive, apparently a happy and content dog, so what is wrong with the way he is doing?

I'm so glad that Bella Starlet is gone! Her owner really got on my nerves. I was confused about what Andrew's owner was saying about Galaxy's owner "training with fear". I never saw Galaxy cower or look afraid of JD and I never saw him use any methods other than praise and toys for her. Besides, treats don't work well for everyone, some dogs are not as food motivated as others so how would you train a dog like that!
I still like Bill & Star and Travis & Pressley the best. Even though neither of them did well on the puppy challenge, but how are you supposed to explain to your dog that they need to "herd" puppies? That was stupid in my opinion.

I am glad that Barbie dog is gone, too! Her owner is just too high-strung & emotional. I don't doubt her love for her dog, but I also don't think she should have been chosen for the show. And she should definitely not have been allowed to stay after her dog tried to bite two people!

Andrew needs to go next, mostly because I don't like his owner. :D

That puppy challenge was ridiculous! What moron came up with that idea?! First off, some dogs are just not tolerant of puppies & there could have been a real problem. Look at poor Star, who is the least aggressive dog I could imagine, even she snapped at the rotten pups when she had too much. I don't think it showed which trainer was the best trainer, all it did was show which dog was best with puppies.

I sort of expected Leroy to win, being a herding breed, although I thought he would herd them out, rather than lead them out like a mother hen and her chicks. :D I am also surprised that Presley didn't just jump the hedge to get to Travis, he is quite the jumper!

I still want Bill & Star or Travis & Presley to win!

Very rarely will a dog work off praise alone unless trained with very harsh methods. The praise becomes a "no punishment" marker and thus why dogs trained with harsh methods will work for it.

It's still no excuse to scruff a dog and throw it around (as he stated he does).  People are people and dogs do not see us as one of them.  Scruffing them just makes them scared of us; they don't associate scruffing with whatever they supposedly did wrong.

ETA: I agree that that had to be the dumbest challenge I've ever seen.  It wasn't even a challenge, it was just based on luck!

Boooooo....I'm so sad Bill & Star are gone!!! I was the most impressed with Pressley, he wanted so bad to get away from that elephant but kept looking at Travis and doing his very best to trust him and stay there!! And as for the zip-line thing, I don't know any dog that would jump off a platform like that, so all of the dogs that did that amazed me!!! Especially Pressley though, he did it with no hesitation! Go Travis and Pressley!!!!

Sorry folks, I am going a little off topic on this post, but had to respond to Somer on training with praise only.

I always use positive reinforcement for my dogs when training and both Belle and Halo could have cared less about food when they were little.  So I was challenged as a trainer to train without food reward.  It can be done with praise alone and no harsh treatment of the dog.  I know allot of good trainers that don't use food to train, and in any case if you show in obedience, rally, etc you cannot use food in the ring.  So, that means you have to eventually wean a dog off of food as a reward.  When you do use praise alone you have to be almost over the top and keep your energy level really high.  The dogs then end up looking for the silly excited person game after they do what you ask them which is the reward for them.  I have one friend who has been training dogs for years (currently she is training 2 vislas and a Norwich terrier) and when she has finished the exercise she gets all excited and says WooHoo and the dog ends up jumping excitedly around her.  Her dogs always are well trained and love to work for her.  She never does anything harsh with them either.

Now don't get me wrong, I will use food if the dog is interested (and boy is my new pup interested) as it is easier. I expect though with my new pup I am going to be challenged by him when I start removing the food reward.  Only time will tell.

Sorry again for the hijack as I know this thread is about the TV show.

I was VERY sad to see Bill go, but I think it was probably best for Star. You could see the last couple of episodes that she wan't very happy with a lot of the things they wanted her to do and she was only doing them because Bill asked her to. They will both be missed, though. :( I thought it was wonderful how willing Bill was to share his knowledge & training skills with Travis and anyone else who asked.

Even if Travis & Presley weren't the most adorable pair, I think I would still be impressed with them. Presley is VERY young, still a pup, really, and he seems to be the first dog Travis has ever had on his own. The fact that Presley has learned everything he has done on the show mostly since he got there is even more amazing than the semi-pro & pro trainers who had already taught their dogs a lot of the behaviors.

I completely disagreed with the judges about their criticism of Travis getting Presley so excited. That annoying woman with the purse ...er, dog... stuck to her arm must have no experience with high-energy (REAL!) dogs, because boxers are bouncy & crazy (a little like GSPs) and Travis & Presley were just being themselves. If anything, I would have criticized his excessive use of the word, "Stay."

The elephant thing was crazy! Andrew totally impressed me, he is pretty mellow for a yappy dog. Then his owner actually acted HUMAN when she saw the card from her husband, which was nice to see. She was always so cold & focused that I couldn't warm up to her. I still think she should be the next to go, though!

I know some people have criticized JD's training methods, but the bond he has with Galaxy is amazing. She gives him the same, "You are my universe & I adore you," pointer stare that Daniel gives me. She was also the only dog dog who didn't so much as hesitate on the zip line, which was amazing! You could see that she trusted JD enough to know that he would never ask her to do anything that would hurt her & she leapt off that platform and wagged her tail the whole way down! I hope her leg gets better soon, hopefully it had nothing to do with the obstacle course.

My impression was that he only used praise as a reward.  Also, if you watch his dog's behaviour he acts very "slinky", ears back, etc. i.e. he has been treated with a heavy hand (which JD admitted to).  In that case, the praise only reward does become VERY rewarding (even more so than to a dog who hasn't been trained with a heavy hand/traditional methods).  He is very old school in his training style.

My dogs like praise, jumping around and getting excited but I don't teach them entire behaviours off praise alone, which is what I thought JD was implying he does.  I switch up to something more interactive with the dog when they master (when I'm positive they understand what I'm asking of them) a behaviour to help make me even more a part of the reward/game.

I had Twiggy enrolled in a basic obed. class at a local training school.  Their traditional yank-n-thank methods were just too old school and disappointing for me to stay the entire 6 sessions (they were recommended to me as positive training and they most definitely weren't).  She doesn't work well with that and either do I (I find it very boring, frustrating and a chore to train like that).  I really don't understand how people can train their dogs like that and enjoy the process at the same time.

I find that my clicker training only method is very different from what most do on here so I rarely post on training threads on this board.

All IMO and how I see it, of course .

I would like to know both of your thoughts on JD's use of toys and play as the reward for Galaxy. It seems like he uses that along with praise. I think Galaxy is way more motivated by her frisbee than she would be by treats. If you watched the zip-line challenge, he kept showing her the toy in his pocket and saying "what is this?" and I think that's what she was working for. And every time she gets through a challenge, or when he is working with her or training her, he rewards her by throwing the frisbee or toy.

Also, how adorable was it when Travis taught Presley to be "embarrassed"?? It looked like he learned that so quickly, he seems really smart!!

I work as a Substitute teacher, adjunct college professor and have been doing some level of therapy dogs for years and one thing I have learned that with training, whether it is for humans or animals, that there is NO one method that works every time.

Ultimately when you are working on teaching someone to do something it is your job as the teacher to learn HOW to teach your student. Some students need heavier hands than others, some need more praise. Some students are attention hogs, while others would prefer to be in a quiet corner. Some can't stop eating and others would starve if you didn't make them stop to eat. At NO point in time can I ever justify abusive attitudes towards animals, but I have seen dogs (and people) that it took a "boot camp" learning style to get through to them and get them on the right path, while other dogs just need a look or a turned back to get back on track. Dogs, like people all have their own personalities, learning styles and individual quirks. The one thing that they have in common is their ability to love unconditionally, and that is what draws us to them.

The one thing we can all agree on is that a well trained dog is a happier dog, because EVERYONE around that dog is more receptive to a dog that can be respectful to guest and family members.

Carrie -

You are dead right when you say every dog is different and different training styles are needed for different dogs.  My library of dog training books is huge and I often pick and choose from the different concepts and then modify based on the dog I am working with.  I have also been known to consult with some friends that have been training different dogs for friends.  Someone will through out a scenario and everyone chimes in on the discussion.  Some great ideas have come out of discussions like that.  That is one reason I really enjoy this forum, the discussions are great.

I was sad to see Bill and Star go too! The judges were wrong for judging bad on him for not making her go up the steep incline and because she wouldn't jump. How old is Star? Plus the episode before this last one with the puppies they judged him for pushing her too far! They need to make up their mind!

Did anyone else think the challenge this week was stupid? How is jumping off a 30 ft ledge supposed to show that the dog is well trained? What does this prove? I just hope sweet little Galaxy isn't hurt too badly. I wanted to punch that twit with the little dog when she asked JD how Galaxy got hurt. Umm... your stupid "stunt"?
