i'd like to keep a thread going for all of us that just got a gsp pup or getting one soon.....i've got to pick my fella up on 7/7 and he'll be 7 weeks old.....this thread will be for us to share tips, strategies, stories, laughs, worries, and pictures.....i know some have already posted pictures of their gsp pup on another thread, but post them here so we can watch all of our pups grow in one thread

I hope so! I WANT the challenge of very high prey drive and intelligence. It's what I have now and won't settle for less.
I'm more of a pointer person then I thought.
Any more new pups coming? I can't be the only one?

| that's tough TBelle....the owner of this fella wanted me to be the first to pick from the males....there were 5 out of a litter of 13....i picked at 2 weeks....not near enough time to see personality, strength, size, etc.....i got lucky though and there was only one that didn't shake/tremble in my hands....so i picked him.....went back two weeks later to check on him, and he was 4 of 13 that was playing with others instead of laying in front of the fan....also the largest of the males, best looking head, and ticked more than the others (being ticked was part of the reason i picked him too)....gonna check on him this weekend and hopefully get some pictures |

Yeah, picking the "pick" is not easy nor is it always the right choice.
Everything depends on what you are looking for and what you can handle.
It will nice to see all the new pups on the forum.

Beautiful dark eye on Bregon, Francine. I know you'll do well with him. 
I also wanted to say something about "the pick", since this is one of the hardest things to do with new litters. Not only is it a tough call, its an almost impossible call. What one person finds as attractive, another may not and want something entirely different, so actually the "pick" put that way is in the eye of the beholder. I don't want to usurp this thread any more than necessary, but just had to say that.
Enjoy those pups...mine is off at TC's Summer Field Camp to learn some basics.

singl you have a good point. Each individual judge determines things based upon their perception of what the rules mean.. most of the contests are subjective sports... So I take it to mean that "pick" of the litter is your determination of what is the pick

great looking pup DRK....and i love the color....she seems to be in good hands and on the right trak....
question though, or maybe an observation....it looks like her rear is levitating off of the table in the 'here birdie' picture...am i just seeing things? |

That's funny, I went back and looked and you're right that it does give that appearance. That's actually just a concrete slab and her butt is kinda hanging off the edge into the dirt.
Look at her father - Thunder - one of our males page and compare to her color. It's amazing how much they looks the same.

i couldn't tell...the other dogs in the background kinda made it look like she was elevated....thought maybe you snapped a picture just before she tumbled backwards
going to check him out again this weekend...will try and remember to take a camera.....i pick him up for good 7/7 |

You asked if I based the picks on my own standards.
Well, not exactly. As a breeder, I'm looking first of all at which puppy most closely resembles the Breed Standard, and which will be show pups, dual pups and very much loved family dogs. A lot of the time this is done not only via observation...as they arrive, through their development and on into chubby puppy adorable-ness. Its possible to judge structure when pups are still wet and barely cleaned up....hard but possible. Then, as they grow...personality, temperament, prey drive, movement. Once they get past what we tend to call the "hamster stage", you can stack them and look again at shoulder layback, rear angulation, balance, clean and straight fronts and rears, bites, eye color...all of that. Okay, so I know which of these pups I am keeping. That one comes out of the mix. 
Now comes the prospective puppy buyer with deposit in hand. Somewhere near the first question is "how far down the line am I for pick puppy?" Well, you say, "were you interested in a girl or a boy and what do you want to do with the puppy?" I want to be sure that the puppies that they see are well suited to them and to their lifestyle, to their wants and needs. Once we get to that stage, then we'll talk about what getting "pick" really means. Yes, in your explanation...my pick may not necessarily be their pick, but most of the pieces will fit well. 
As an example, in Kate's last litter, one puppy stood out as "wanting to be a field trial dog" ![<img src=]() " align="absMiddle" border="0" src="/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/blue/emoticons/smile.gif" /> Probably kind of far-fetched, but that was what the breeder felt. To have placed that puppy with someone who didn't have time or inclination for such could have been a recipe for a returned puppy and disaster. So, from the breeder's viewpoint it becomes judicious juggling of this attribute for that and voila, your very own pick puppy! ![<img src=]() " align="absMiddle" border="0" src="/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/blue/emoticons/smile.gif" />

This is my 8 week old GSP Indy, he's been a dream so far and his housebreaking is going smooth as can be, he stoped howling at night after his second night in his crate and is efinatly the center of attention where ever I take him  . He came froma litter of 8 "4 male and 4 female"
