Turned the liver in my dog's coats red, pricey for the ingredients. JMHO. Stick with the ProPlan but unless you are actively running and trialing I doubt you'd need the 30% protein, specially not in the summer. (either ProPlan or Eukanuba). I'm not a big Euk fan but JMHO, of course. Phyllis and the Singltrak Furtribe www.singltrakshorthairs.net |

I switched over to Innova a few months ago & I can already tell the difference in Danie;l's coat, which is softer and less reddish. Layla's cashmere-soft fur had started to get coarse & reddish like Daniel's so I decided it was definitely time to try another kind of food. They also get more extras in their bowls to help keep a good variety. 3 heaping tablespoons of full-fat plain yogurt & an egg every morning and some type of meat and sometimes some other yummy at night. They have access to kibble all day long, but I promise I won't start a free-feed/structured feed debate. It's like dog food, very much an individual choice tailored to what the owner thinks works best for their four-legged buddy. |

| WGSPR is an Ambassador for Purina Rally to Rescue, so if we do enough Rally showings a year we earn a 1/2 pallet of Purina Pro Plan, which is excellent food! However, every now and then you get a weriod dog in the bunch, like my Miracle, who can only eat NO wheat/corn/additives, so she gets Nature's Recipe venison dry food. Cleared her skin conditions right up fast. |

We feed Eukanuba Sporting performance and Iams in the green bag. The sporting performance is really nice feed, but it's not right for every dog. I have one who looses weight on it. We speculate it's like the Adkins diet, with more fat and protien than his body wants. On the other hand, we're feeding it to a lactating bitch right now, and nothing we've ever tried has been better. Dove is getting fat while nursing and keeping her coat (so far). We feed Eukanuba & Iams because Dr. Amanda gets free feed from them for being a stocking veterinarian, and their breeder program is better than Purina's. For every 5 bags of Euk we buy, they give us a free one (turn in 6 proofs of purchase 1 from the free bag, and 5 that you buy). I also have had good success from Purina's ONE product as well as the ProPlan. Again, I don't think the quality jump from ONE to ProPlan is as great as the price jump. Some dogs just seem to do better on certain foods. If you have good coat, good muscle tone and proper weight, no need to fool around with feed. If you don't, a minor change can produce big differences. For dogs with real troubles, there is an allergy screening that your vet can do. It's not cheap, but when you are hunting and pecking trying to figure out what's wrong, it's worth it. My MiL's dog's report came back as thick as a magazine. The thick part the list of everything she was allergic to. The thin part was every food she COULD eat. Funny thing is the list included one relatively inexpensive food that is easy to find at the grocery store. I can't remember which it was, but we'd not have checked that brand's label. So the test will likely pay for itself in reduced feed costs. |

I don't agree with asking your vet...many will automatically say Science Diet since they do offer deep perks for most vets to place their product in their offices.
Phyllis I certainly agree with the above. More importantly let me ask you this. Have you ever seen a working dog fed any formulation of Science diet that didn't look like an Ethiopian on his way to a relief camp?
They all appear to be protien deficient (thin stringy muscling) as well as thin skinned (can't put weight on them) and I've never seen any of them with any endurance in the field. CR |

LOL, Beverly ! So, so true! The canned I/D is like something out of a wallpaper paste manufacturer and smells kind of like it also. And, Charlie, I can't recall ever even SEEING bags of SD in any trialer's rig, accccckkkkkk! Exactly on point (heh) with the senior dog...why NOT let them eat what they want, what is it gonna do, kill them? (that's said very tongue in cheek for you who don't know my skewed sense of humor) When both my elderly dogs were in their last days, I would have fed them ANYTHING, even filet' mignon, if it had helped keep them alive. As I recall, they both enjoyed a lot of those satin balls without much drama. Phyllis and the furtribe www.singltrakshorthairs.net |

when we got Bean, her (owner) (captor)................told me he fed her whatever was ON SALE
I was so disgusted by his lack of concern, I decided to just go with the food I'd fed my last Lab, It had to be better than what she was used to...and she'd had a litter, during her time at this household, I have no idea, what he did with the puppies....BUT you get my drift, about her nutritional status
SO I feed Nutro Natural Choice bag says with Glucosamine & Chondroitin I I buy the Lamb Meal & rice small bites................SO FAR so GOOD been about 18 months, and I'm no expert, but she seems to like it and I LIKE her color & coat
Does anyone have any knowledge of this brand ??? I've not seen anyone mention it...

Beans - Try rating it yourself (use this link www.ddgnevada.com/HOWTORATEYOURDOGFOOD.pdf) I have tried this test on several dog foods and it is pretty good. They already have a Nutro product rated at the end of the test, but I don't think it is the one you use. My girls like some of the Nutro treats, but I have never used their dog food. As I said in an earlier post, if your pup has a good coat, is healthy, right weight, has lots of energy, etc., then I wouldn't mess with what is NOT broken. Keep feeding what you are feeding. It is really easy to get into a guessing game on dog food and there is not one size fits all, it is what works for you and your dog.
Beans sure is lucky to have a mom and dad who love her so much. You do really good by your furbaby . |

I fed Nutro Max back in 88-89, then they changed the formula, so I went with the Nutro Natural Choice L/R (had a girl allergic to the ethoxyquin they used back in the early 90's as a preservative) so switched out of Nutro and into Eukanuba...dogs turned red...nope. Back to ProPlan. That worked okay for awhile (3-4 years) and then I switched everyone over to Exceed Lamb and Rice (Sam's Club brand but made by Pro Plan and tons cheaper) Okay, but I needed more weight and the Exceed Chicken was too HOT for my non-trial dogs. Several brands later..(and 20 years) we use Canidae and ProPlan Chicken. Rico, the pup at Terry's for summer camp is eating Pro Plan Performance and starting to look like a dog again, rather than an Ethiopian refugee...needed more protein and a higher fat ratio. So, its all in what your dogs like, what they will eat and what they do well on... Phyllis (who wouldn't go back to Nutro, but if it works for you...hey) |

Something appropriate for the topic.:
Menu Foods Pet Food Recall
Claim: A number of pet food products have been recalled due to a possible association with kidney failure-related illnesses and deaths of cats and dogs.
Status: True.
Origins: The massive recall of pet food products manufactured by Menu Foods that began in mid-March 2007 (after those products, sold under a variety of brand names, were linked to kidney-related illnesses and deaths in a number of cats and dogs) has been a confusing and worrisome issue for consumers. Initial reports that all the suspected products had been recalled, that only can and pouches of Menu Foods wet food were affected, and that the
problem was due to a form of rat poison (used as a pesticide) present in wheat gluten obtained from a foreign supplier have all since been contradicted.
FDA testing of Menu Foods' products did not turn up evidence of rat poison, and the contaminant now suspected is melamine, a chemical used in the manufacture of plastics and as a type of fertilizer. Melamine has been found in wheat gluten (which serves as a binding agent and source of protein in pet foods) imported from China and used by Menu Foods, but toxicologists are unsure whether it is sufficiently toxic at the levels detected so far to have caused the reported cases of kidney failure in cats and dogs.
Potentially contaminated shipments of wheat gluten have also been tracked to Hill's Pet Nutrition, Nestlé Purina PetCare, and Del Monte Pet Products, and all of those brands have issued voluntary recalls of some of their products as well.
We have compiled as comprehensive a list of recalled pet food products as possible from the information available to us, but pet owners should be sure to check all of the following sites to determine whether a particular brand (and form) of pet food is currently under recall:
a.. Menu Foods (cat products)
b.. Menu Foods (dog products)
c.. Hill's Pet Nutrition
d.. Purina Pet Foods
e.. Del Monte Pet Products
f.. FDA (Pet Food Recall)

Pet owners who think their animals may have been affected by contaminated products should contact a veterinarian and their local FDA office if their pets begin exhibiting symptoms of kidney failure (e.g., lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting). Cats are much more likely to be affected than dogs.

Welcome to the GSP group! Let's see some pictures.
I've fed both our boys Royal Canin for over 2.5 years now and they have great coats, nice energy, no allergic reactions, and no trouble eating when I put the bowl down. Occasionally I add 1/2 a can of Merrick food (Working Dog Stew) and also use the Satin Balls recipe for training treats. I've tried Evo and 1 became allergic. Our field trainer uses National brand and I noticed my dog's coat became just stunning.
So probably no help here, but I agree with the majority in that you have to try on your own and figure out what works best for your babies.
Have a great day! |

Hello and welcome! Sounds like there's a little of everything as far as what food works for each of us, but for what it's worth we feed our three Iams and then put a little yogurt or cottage cheese on the dry food in the morning meal. They all have nice coats, no stomach issues, etc. but I do believe it depends on the individual dog what will work best for you.
Have fun with the pup! |

Hi,
I just found this site today and am excited as I pick up my gsp puppy Aug 3. The breeder is currently feeding VF complete. His GSP's look healthy but I am not an expert Anyone currently feeding this or have any experience with it? I have read through the posts and no one has suggested it as one they (those that have posted) would recommend.

Texas Belle thanks for providing that food evaluator link.
By my count, the food we give Bogart, TLC, scores a 120. |
