Hi!  We will be getting our first GSP in about 3 weeks and I am looking for any reading material that would be helpful for us to read before she comes home.  We will not be using her for hunting, so I am also looking for ideas on games and exercises that will stimulate and engage her.   We will be enrolling her in obedeince school when the next set of classes start, but I am also looking for some breed specific ideas for training.

Any info or direction would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Congratulations on picking a GSP.  They are wonderful dogs.z

Some really good books that I like, especially for people getting puppies are:

The Dog's Mind, Bruce Fogle DVM

The Other End of the Leash, Patricia B. McConnell PhD

The Art of Raising a Puppy, The Monks of New Skete

Beyond Basic Dog Training, Diane L. Bauman

for GSPs:

 Der Deutsch-Kurzhaar, Georgina Byrnes

for fun things:

Fun and Games with Dogs, Roy Hunter

You know you have to post pictures when you get your pup.  That's the rule for this forum.

Bev Quarles, the Pointer Sisters (Belle and Halo) and the Outlaw GSP (Johnny Ringo)

Thanks!

It won't be our first dog, though it has been a long time since we had a puppy so I might get that book as a refresher.  When I searched for books on German Shorthairs quite a few come up so I was looking for some direction on one that is highly recommended.

waterhousegsp:  I have two GSPs (3 and 4 YO) and will also be getting a puppy in about 5 weeks.  So I am going through allot of my books and re-reading some of them.  I have also been getting some newer books and reading those as well.  Recently the one I really liked is The Other End of the Leash as the author is an animal behaviorist and talks about how dogs perceive things as opposed to us humans.  Lots of good thought provoking stories with plenty of info.  I also liked The Art of Raising a Puppy which I had never read before, but had allot of info.  Can't wait to see the pictures.

I second the recommendation on "The Other End of the Leash". I'm at work right now, but there are another couple of books that I read recently that I liked - will post when I get home.

Thank you!  The more information I have the better.

I did find The Other End of The Leash and so far I have really enjoyed the first couple of chapters.  I also bought a short book about GSPs that has been informative but not as much as I would like.

We are supposed to pick our female tonight, I'll try to post pics later.

Thanks again!

Your little hot pink girl is so cute.  How old is she?

Didn't get a chance to go online Monday, but here are a couple more suggestions. Go to the website, www.dogwise.com and you'll find lots of dog-related books and the prices are reasonable. One book that I found especially insightful and poignant was "Bones Would Rain from the Sky" by Susan Clothier. Not a training book, but an interesting book to read for all dog owners. Another good one is "The Power of Positive Dog Training" by Pat Miller. I'm not an expert by any means, but it seems like many years ago when I got my boxer and then shortly thereafter my first GSP, obedience training was much more about forcing your dog to do what you wanted. Now as I take Hans through obedience training the philosophy is much more about figuring out ways to work with your dog so he wants to do the things you want him to do. Again, I'm not an expert, but it sure seems to make sense that Hans will repeatedly do the "right" things if he's been rewarded, not punished, and he gets pleasure out of the experience.

Good luck with your new family member - she's adorable!!!! :)
